recently i've been thinking a lot about tifa? (i mean. clearly. lmao)

just. this girl who is just so helplessly possessed by her own past. that blythe baird quote about living in a body that was the scene of a crime etc etc. clinging onto the remnants of this boy that she barely even knew anymore in the years leading up to that day, because he's all she has left of that place, of that time, of that person she used to be. like. you are pragmatic and intelligent and painfully realistic and yet in the dead of night you can't help but think What If? what if that never happened to me? oh how happy and carefree and strong i would be. thus begins this agonizing process of purging yourself of these delusional dreams of returning to the unbroken girl you used to be

and then when you think you've finally found a new life that you can see yourself living, you return to that long dead place, and it doesn't bear even a single scar of that day, the day that left you broken and mangled and lost. all this time you nearly destroyed yourself trying to accept that it was gone when it was here all along, seemingly untouched. but indeed it must be profoundly and irrevocably different because You are not a part of it anymore. in those corners where you ran and played and hiked and danced, those crooks where the village cradled you perfectly, suddenly stands an irritable stranger saying you must be a foreigner. what does that do to you? how could it not completely destabilize you?

a lot of og tifa's story is about loving and saving cloud the childhood friend, but imo it's much more interesting if we let her story be about a girl who loved a village and a village who loved a girl. and of course cloud becomes a dear friend over time, of course, but at the beginning he's just a boy from that beloved village. which to everyone else is nothing but to tifa (and only tifa) it's Everything – it drives everything she does for him and puts up with and brushes off with him, in those first few months. (i actually kind of resent that moment in traces of two pasts where she randomly decides that she likes him at the water tower. girl why you don't even know him!!) it's just so much more compelling to me if he only becomes centrally important to her in the After. and then it's a journey of retroactively discovering who this person was in the Before, and is this a person that i, who i truly am in the Now, could come to love for who he truly is, beyond the pain and loss and that long gone unbroken girl and that long erased unburned village that he came from? and if i can love him beyond all that, then maybe i can come to love myself beyond it too.
