Reflection
Overall I was fairly happy with my outcome. It was interesting to do a project where I was changing major components in the few days beforehand and the outcome wasn’t fully refined. But I felt like this enabled me to iterate my design idea to a point that I was happy with, to a design that engages with the site (site specific) and also with the community and public. If I was to do everything again I would test my presentation so there were no technical issues and I think it would have been a good idea to try and capture a video of some fabric moving in the Andrews Ave space.

Video of growth of community added fabrics/strings/‘pathway’s over time.
The other element to my design is community driven, where people are invited to add their own ‘path’ or just include to the existing by adding string, bits of fabric or whatever they wish. At the beginning of 3 months to encourage people they will be provided with these bits of fabric or string to add. As time goes by people can bring their own and add to it. So the installation will grow with density and vibrancy in the course of three months through that community involvement.

Way from High St following installation to the riverside for final pres.
The proposal stretches from the river to High Street so that it is visible for people walking down High St. It becomes like a wayfinder that leads people into Andrews Ave and eventually to the river. Walking down High Street you can see the fluid blue motion in the air, and as you get closer to Andrews Ave, with its rapid wind patterns the fluid motion becomes a bit more wild and leads you into Andrews Ave, then to the river.
The installation has structures along it at Andrews Ave, the stopbank and the riverside which enable the fabric to be attached to it and have parts hanging down, encouraging people’s interaction with the installation and with each other.

The budget of constructing this installation largely depends on the fabric. It could be made quite cheaply or quite expensively. It’s just important that the fabric needs to be sheer or have holes in it to reduce the force from the wind which could become a nightmare. Budget will also include the processing of attaching the fabric to the existing structures and also the materials needed for the application. These structures are basic and I think scaffolding would work well as it’s easy to get and doesn’t draw attention away from the main idea. They’ll be drilled into the ground so will need building consent for that.

Final proposal.
Overall my main aim is to link elements of the wind and river in order to connect people together. The attractive, moving installation will attract not only lower hutt community but also people from the wider wellington region to come into the area, play and spend money. The proposal looks at the future possibilities of andrews ave through a temporary event, in terms of connecting to the river and seeing the potential of wind.

Discussion 25/11
Might be good to simplify the idea, the structure is too dominating.
One simple line.
Community doesn’t necessarily have to add to it (the drawing). People being able to sit and lounge could be interactive enough.
Christo.
Riverlink.
Think about how some people will interact with it. Despite intentions it won’t be as you expect.
Thoughts:
Simplify
One line going to the river with parts hanging down in places (using the poles) for people to sit.
The line will be like a way finder.

Proposal at current
a way of linking the river back to Andrews Ave, highlighting how it once wasn’t as detached as it is now.
uses wind to depict the fluid motion of the river in fabric.
community contribution and involvement through writing/drawing on fabric that will be strung up. people will be able to come back and try and find theirs which will encourage exploration of the area and going by the river.
through the period of 3 months the links between the strung fabrics will appear and grow. eg. start of 3 months, a few strung up by river, on Andrews Ave and high st but no strong links between them or crazy amounts. end of 3 months, full, all linked up and many with writing/drawings strung up. over the course of the 3 months the installation will grow and link up being heavily connected from high st, down Andrews Ave and to the river.
certain areas will have fabric hanging down which will allow for seating/ lounging.
the area will also have food trucks, music and proper seating on some days/nights for people to sit and enjoy the fabric surroundings.
demographics - there will be a wide range of people interested. children and families, kids will have fun and enjoy the drawing aspects and playing around the fabric. people from around other districts will want to come as well.
things to think about:
vandalism, how can this be avoided?
road safety, for high st and the car parking area and through to the river will the fabric cause distractions for drivers? also encouraging going to the river safety of pedestrians?
materiality - material that is light and fluid, but this may have to be different for the hanging down seats.
colour.
the way the hanging down seating will actually work. eg. need to construct something else that will enable this.
where the hanging down seats will be.
how the fabric is attached to existing lamps, poles etc.

Discussion 21/11
work on narrative - this could be about the past or the future
demographics. think about who is going to come in and see this eg. people from outside of Lower Hutt
what could the community add?
there is a possibility of making it an event to glue everything together
premise - what is the main focus, what will people take away from it? eg. could be about embracing the wind
1 or 2 points that are more finished than the other points is OK
