It’s in the way he holds himself, shoulders rigid, tension coursing through his veins. How his breath wavers and shakes. In how he barely flinches when she opens the door.Bad night. Worse day.Admittedly, her head was too much of a daze to remember much of the night before. Yet she can recall, crystal clear, how he would fidget and roll, wake up clawing for air and slick with sweat. The nightmares he refused to speak of. Sarah couldn’t blame him. Perhaps once he started, the words wouldn’t stop, the nightmares would return to hunt him down while he was awake.

She wasn’t sure if it would be any different than it was now.

“Hey…” It’s softly spoken, words barely breaking past a whisper as she makes a cautious approach, hand coming to rest on the small of his back. “Good day out, huh? The breeze is really nice, last bits of summer are treating us well.”

His reply is brisk, a cold 'yeah' before his attention returns to the window. And it's hard, because she never feels quite as hopeless as she does on these days. She's not annoyed at him for it, he can't be blamed, but she's learning, even in the most subtle of ways to try and ease him out of the slump. She's annoyed at herself for not knowing how to help him any better.

"Darlin', c'mere." Her fingers lace in his own, free hand gliding over Nate's back to hold him closer. She lets her thumb graze over the back of his hand, tracing the veins and groves in his skin. There's a sway to her step, a soft rock to try and settle him down, face pressed to the warmth of his shoulder. Teetering back on her heels, soft lips are pressed to his forehead.It'll be okay.That's what she intends to say.I won't leave you.

"I haven't taken Sam out for a walk yet... We could hit the block? Nothing far..." It's cautious, said with an uneasy smile as she cups his face with her palm. "I love you, okay? Not letting you go through this alone."

Laughter rumbled in her throat as he gently pulled her onto his lap, hands idly resting on his chest as he smiled up at her. It was soft, oddly so, the dim lighting in the room only seemed to highlight his features. God. He was stunning. She could make out the soft scars cutting across his skin, the sharp edges of his jawline, eyes glistening in the light. She was all too wrapped up in him, fingers curling into his hair as Harry’s lips parted to speak.

“You look beautiful.”

And her words catch in her throat, dazed as his fingers come to cup her cheek, hand raising to gently hold his palm to her face. Beautiful.It’s a word that feels so shockingly foreign that for a moment she has next to no response other than a giddy smile and flustered laughs. It takes that one phrase to pull her back to reality, to realise that this has become far more than she’s ever expected it to be. She loves him, she’s hopelessly head over heels for a charming thief. He needed to know, has to tell her how she feels and-

“Now, darlin’, where is this flattery coming from?”Another time.
