Notable annotations for August 4:
Today's entry does not have an annotation as much as it has a mini-essay by Klinger exploring why on earth Dracula, who seemingly wants to avoid detection, behaved this way on the ship. He first risked delaying his voyage by surrounding the ship in such thick fog that the crew could no longer tell where they were going, and then proceeded to kill off essentially the entire crew, ensuring that the ship's arrival would cause a huge stir upon reaching port. Why not feed on the crew discreetly, without killing, as we know he can do?
The conclusions Klinger comes to are as follows:
Option 1: Dracula sucks at planning because of the way his brain works. Klinger argues that this is disproven by Dracula's other actions, particularly the way that, the next time he's on a ship, he doesn't eat everyone. I personally would argue that maybe the next ship's crew was spared because he learned from this voyage, but anyway.
Option 2: Dracula actually needs to fully consume at least one person almost daily, and Jonathan just did not witness these feedings, as Dracula did not drag grown adults back to the castle. He only leaves victims alive for a while if he plans to turn them, and everyone else he eats immediately. If that is the case, however, why would he look so aged in Transylvania if he were feeding regularly?
Option 3: Dracula actually wasn't eating the crew of the Demeter. The first mate describes Dracula as ghastly pale, whereas Jonathan describes Dracula's skin as looking "ruby-red underneath" after feeding. Perhaps crewmen saw Dracula and either jumped overboard, as the mate did, or else died of fright, leaving Dracula to dispose of the bodies. Perhaps the mate went mad due to proximity to a vampire and killed off the crew as the captain had suspected him of doing, whether because he mistook them for the vampire or because he suspected they had been fed on by Dracula and so would turn into vampires. It could be that Dracula was sleeping peacefully for the whole voyage until the mate roused him by moving around his boxes, and when the captain saw him, Dracula was just freaking out about how he was supposed to reach his destination now rather than trying to kill or terrorize.
My own theory is that it's either option one and Dracula is a dumbass, or a different possibility entirely: Dracula wanted the ship that carried him to have no survivors, for two reasons: One, if anyone onboard spotted him, they couldn't tell anyone else after the fact, which could allow Dracula to be traced. Two, if someone did manage somehow to connect Dracula to the Demeter, well, everyone knows that the Demeter had no survivors. There was an investigation and everything! (Dracula would be banking on the fact that whoever connected him with the Demeter didn't know he was immortal in this theory)
Of course, those are my Watsonian explanations. My Doylist belief is simply that Stoker (rightly) knew that writing the Demeter this way would be scary as fuck.

Murderbot and Gurathin attempting to weaponize each other’s asexual autism and ending up weaponizing that against themselves in the process because they’re The Same is genuinely my favorite part of the show so far
Gurathin: Haha! I will force you to make eye contact, which will cause you stress due to your aversion!
Murderbot: Right. Did it occur to you that you’re also eye contact averse, so this is going to distress you almost as much as me?
Gurathin: …no I did not consider that. Fuck. Fuck
Murderbot: Well while you’re busy regretting that - haHA! I will force you to watch your coworkers getting it on, which will distress you due to your sex-repulsion and discomfort with breaking certain boundaries!
Gurathin: Mm. Did it occur to you that you’re also sex-repulsed, and that in order to broadcast that to me, you have to be watching it yourself, so this is going to distress you almost as much as me?
Murderbot: Fuck.

My lowkey favourite part of Murderbot so far is when it says something like "Gurathin was in the med bay with Baradwaj, like there was something he could do the medsystem couldn't", and he's holding her hand.

Another Re: Dracula episode where I am caught completely off guard and knocked clean off my feet by the voice acting despite it not even being my first (or even second) year hearing it. The complete exhaustion mixed with terror both more than ever from the captain, to the point that some parts are said so quietly they're nearly inaudible, and yet the determination he still manages to give when he says he'll tie his hands to the wheel along with a cross. The evil laughter from Dracula coming in the background even as he speaks. The Ratcatcher, obviously The Ratcatcher, which never would've slipped my mind even if other details had, just as clever and unnerving and incredible as it's ever been. Gosh FREAKING DANG, big BIG shout-out to the August 4th Re: Dracula, cheese and freaking rice. Endless applause to the Re: Dracula team once again and forever.

Murderbot is such a neurodivergent power fantasy. It can
- store unlimited media and watch it privately
- turn down sensory organs that are bothering it
- look at stuff without its eyes
- cross reference its data storage when it doesn't know what to say
- program "human-like behavior"
- super duper kill the shit out of anyone that fucks with it

A self-indulgent sketch of dr. Gurathin from Murderbot, which I recently watched and became obsessed about. You can't judge me. There was no chance I'd get past these two anxious, socially awkward, depressed augmented human and construct.

"SecUnit would write fanfic"
"It would only beta read and leave comments"
SecUnit would install itself as a moderator of the Sanctuary Moon fandom wiki page. SecUnit would, for the simple transgression of being annoying - delete your account, IP ban, find your personal email address and send you a citation-laden 5 page explanation about how you're wrong titled "Banned for life (idiot)"
