Don’t believe representation matters? I put on some weight over the last few years and I’ve been feeling pretty gloomy about it. (Thanks, societal ideals!) I also happen to watch a lot of cartoons, and until I saw She-ra last week, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a chubby female main character. Especially not one whose weight isn’t her main personality trait. Enter Glimmer.

By the end of 13 episodes of girls kicking butt and challenging their elders, I was feeling better about myself. When I look in the mirror, I’ve started thinking “I look like Glimmer” and feeling good about it instead of focusing on all the weight I haven’t lost. It’s the most positive I’ve been about my body in ages.

The kicker? I’m 35. And it still mattered that I saw myself represented in a cartoon. It made me feel like who I am is okay. Think what it means for little girls who are still learning about who they are and where they fit into society.

In conclusion, I will stan She-ra now and forever and I will fight you if you suggest the new character designs are anything but great.
