As apparently Magnus is kinda like this in the books (I haven't read and will not read them, but I have been told so), I want to add:

In my mind, it would be more severe. And it would be AU, I wouldn't be able to fit it into the Shadowhunter canon. Magnus would have a goal he is striving for. One which probably has to do with revenge. (very, very justified revenge).

In his pursuit of that, he would come upon the group a lot by complete coincidence, and helping them out would be an inconvenience, which he would let them know 🤣

But he would help them, every time, no matter how much he gripes about it. And that griping would get less and less over time.

I cannot possibly explain my thought process, but this gif, for *some* reason, makes me think of anti-hero Magnus who keeps finding the heroes (Alec and co) entrapped or in some other kind of trouble, and then helps them out. At first very annoyed, but with every additional save, he kinda warms up to them.

I don't even know how to put it into words.

I guess the easiest would be to draw a comparison to a manga/anime series, called "Fairy Tail".

Basically just a magical guild that has many members who become each other's family of choice. Smaller teams form inside the guild, who do jobs together. An episodic formular, with a 'monster of the week' vibe. That give ample time to get to know the characters, and have them form platonic and romantic relationships.

And Malec being at the center, of course.

Different backgrounds that get uncovered over time. Hopes and dreams and shenanigans.

With the occasional guild tournament, where they compete with other guilds and may or may not come out victorious.

Fun and magic and feelings.

Not another mundane meet-cute!

crash Izzy getting out of her car: "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"

Clary gettingout of her car: "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. Are you okay?"

Izzy: "I'm good. I think I'm good. I don't know. Am I bleeding anywhere?"

Clary: "No. I don't see anything. Any pain? Am I bleeding anywhere?"

Izzy: "No, you look good. And no, no pain. You?"

Clary: "No, nothing. Just a bit shook."

Izzy: "Me too. So, are we, I don't know, are we supposed to do something now? Call an ambulance or something?"

Clary: "But neither of us are hurt, right?"

Izzy: "Right. Shouldn't do that then. Would just take them away from people that really need help. Uhm, then we should… call the police?"

Clary: "Or just trade insurance info?"

Izzy: "… I don't know. Let me call my older brother real quick, he should know."

Clary: "Oh, good idea! I'll call Magnus! He is basically my older brother. I mean, technically he lives across the hall from us, but he has basically adopted us into his fold. Actually, this is his car, so I should probably call him anyway."

Izzy: "Sounds good. And ditto on this being my brother's car, too."

Izzy, on the phone: "Alec! How is my favorite brother in this whole, wide world?" Alec, on the other end: "What did you do?"

Clary on the phone: "Magnus, I'm so sorry! I damaged your car!" Magnus, on the other end: "Were you in the car when you damaged it? Are you alright? Don't worry about the car, I have 3 more."

The phone conversation:

Clary: "I'm fine, don't worry. But I kinda don't know what to do now? And neither does the woman I crashed into-" Magnus: "Crashed in to?! You crashed?! Are you sure you are alright?" Clary: "I'm okay, just a bit jittery still. But, the other woman and I both don't know if we need to-" Magnus: "You can't be sure you are fine! You just had a car accident. That might just be the adrenaline running through your veins, making you think you are fine, when in reality, you broke three bones and have a concussion!" Clary: "Magnus, I promise I'm okay. I just need to know if we should call the police to make a report, or if we are good just trading insurance-" Magnus: "You are not okay! Stay where you are, I'm sending you an ambulance! Actually, where are you?" Clary: "You don't need to send an ambulance!" Magnus: "Okay, I tracked your location, good thing my car has gps. I will call the ambulance on my way. Be right there, Biscuit!" Clary: "Magnus, you don't- damn, he hung up."

meanwhile with Izzy

Izzy: "Why do you automatically assume that I have done something just because I'm calling you and trying to be nice?" Alec: "Experience built up over 20 years of being your brother. So, what did you do?" Izzy: "I didn't do anything. However, what happened is that I may have been speeding a bit, and another woman may have forgot to put her turn signal, and then we may have crashed into each other." Alec: "Crashed???! You crashed into another car? Another car crashed into you? Are you alright?" Izzy: "I'm fine, don't have a cow. I only called because I'm unsure about the following procedure? Like, what are the rules in play here?" Alec: "… You are asking about how to follow the rules? On your own accord? Instead of just flying by the seat of your pants? You must have a concussion. I'm coming!" Izzy: "NO, Alec- … fuck."

(I have a thing for stories where the main focus is on what would usually be a supporting/side character. And I have posted a similar prompt like this before)

So, magical girl setup, where teens have special powers (not just the girls, but Sailor Moon is simply the easiest example one can make).

Clary is one of the magical girls in question

Alec is a veteran hero with special powers, who has been browbeaten into taking the teens under his wing and teach them the ropes. (He is not happy about it)

Magnus is Clary's non-magical step-brother, who has no idea about his step-sister's extracurricular. (we are going with the magical transformation having a glamour effect, that people can only see through if they are aware of it)

I mostly envision one scene, where Clary in her magical girl persona goes: "Help! My brother just ran into that burning building!"

Alec: "Why?!"

Clary: "Because I told him that's where I stuffed his sister when the demons attacked!"

Alec: "WHY?!"

Clary: "I didn't realize it was on fire!!!"

super cracky and not to be taken too seriously.

But Magnus being all giddy about "mundane engineering" when it comes to every day tools.

Completely run of the mill things, like salad spinners.

"Look Darling, this is what Mundanes use to dry their salads after washing the leafes! You put the salad in this sieve like bowl, which you put into this other bowl, on which you then put this funky thing, and then put on the lid, and then the lid aligns with the funky thing, and here is a knob for you to grab and rotate. And then that creates a centrifugal force that spins the inside sieve like bowl, and this just flings the water off your salad leaves! completely without magic or electricity! Isn't that so neat? And have you seen this apple slicer? Genius!"

Also

Magnus: "This is a fanny pack. Another fine example of mudane ingenuity. The name might suggest that it is to be worn over your ass, but I thought it would be more appropriate on the front. It has a lot of space for you phone, wallet, keys,-"

Alec: "I think you are supposed to wear that over your clothes?"

Magnus: "-condoms, lube, handcuff-"

Alec: "Nevermind." *grabs Magnus' hand and hauls him to the bedroom*

Alec, while reading a magazine: "Mundanes are weird."

Jace: "Why this time?"

Alec: "There is a quiz here that is supposed to determine how good of a 'Bro' your best friend is. 'Would your bro help you lie to your significant other if you were cheating on them?' Would you lie to Magnus if I was cheating on him?"

Jace: "Yeah, sure, I would cover for you."

Alec: ".... How dare you. You would lie to Magnus and let me betray his trust? Hurt the most precious man on earth? ... I'm not talking to you for the rest of the day." *gets up and leaves.*

Magnus: "Good luck in the competition, Alexander."

Alec: "You know what works really well for luck? A kiss."

Alec: "I think I could work through this paperwork much faster if you sat on my lap."

Magnus: *just raises an eyebrow actually*

Alec: "Okay, it won't be faster, but it will definitely be more fun."

Possibly unpopoular opinion, but while I adore magic wielding Magnus, I don't necessarily asscociate Magnus with magic. Because magic is something he was born with, and had no influence over possessing.

More, I asscociate a scientific mind and curiosity with him, because that is what drove him to learn about his magic, expand and experiment with it. So for me, Magnus is a scholar and scientist at heart more than he is a mage.

Same why I asscociate the bow with Alec. Because he had no say over becoming a fighter, but he chose the bow.

Small Town Diner Malec AU

Okay, absurdedly random thought about mundane small town au Malec, where Alec has a diner and Magnus moves there to raise his daughter Madzie.

random diner scene:

Magnus: "Alexander! Did you spruce up your menu? Is that glitter I see?"

Alec: "Your daugther thought it needed to look "cheerier"."

Magnus: "Ah. Should have realized she had a hand in this by that little unicorn drawing in the bottom corner."

Alec: "So that's what that is. I couldn't really make it out and just told her it was beautiful. Though to be honest, my money was on rhinoceros."

Tiny tiny Malec

I'm not yet over the idea of Thumbelina sized Malec.

Just them being little fairies, or other tiny magical beings, and fighting big bugs, or riding squirrels, or what have yous

In a world where Asmodaddy was a loving, if slightly overprotective, father, I like to imagine that he would pop up occasionally when malec are kissing and go: "Get your face off my son!" 🤣

Who else thinks that Magnus would be the type to celebrate "fascinating and bizarre" traditions all over the world? La Tomatina in Spain, he is there, dragging Raphael with him whenever the weather is overhung enough to protect the vampire from sunlight. Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling in Englad. Ragnor tries to not be anywhere Magnus would find him when that tradition comes around. The "Schultüte" from Germany. He and Catarina made one for Madzie with great enthusiasm. Dot and him visit Bessières in the South of France regularly in the spring, bringing lots of eggs, for The Giant Omelette. In January, whatever poor soul hasn't managed to hide from Magnus in time, gets taken along to Iceland, for the “feast of Thorri”. The "Naked Run" in Denmark? Yup. Magnus participates.

Cursed Springs!

(I honestly don't remember if I have posted this here before. And I'm too lazy to search through my archive. So, have a possible repost)

We are taking the cursed springs premise from the manga/anime Ranma 1/2. (We are not taking any of the characters from that series though. just the springs)

Magnus has been all over the world (and possibly some other realms and dimensions).

There might have been a cursed spring in his way.

And now, he transforms when hit with cold water. (into an animal, preferably. The gender change is too boring)

I'm voting for duck transformation. Because of the lols. If we goes swimming in his cursed form, Alec can sit nearby and make sure to shoot any predatory birds before they can swoop down and try to eat ducky Magnus.

Jace: Came in with Izzy. Hi Max. Alec? You got jam? Clary told me to get jam.

Alec: What? When did Izzy get in? And I'm pretty sure Clary meant for you to go to the supermarket and buy some.

Jace: Semantics. I'll check in your fridge. Bye Max, don't break too many hearts at uni!

Max: Bye Jace! Oh, hi Maia!

Alec, shocked again: Maia? What?

Maia: Hi Max, how are you doing? Met any cute girls or guys yet?

Alec: Maia, why are you here?

Maia: Oh, I'm looking for Izzy. Have you seen her?

Max: She came in with Jace. You should ask him. He is in the kitchen. Also, no one interesting yet, but there is a frat party next weekend.

Maia: Thanks Max. Have fun at the party.

Alec: ... Will there be drinking at that party?

Max: Broooo, come oooon. I'm old enough.

Catarina: Not in this state.

Alec, shocked again: Catarina! Where did you come from?

Catarina: ... I've been here for three hours, Alec.

Max: Hi Cat!

Catarina: Hi Max. No drinking.

Max: Okay.

Alec: Why haven't I noticed you for the last three hours?

Magnus, walking into the living room: Because you tend to be not very observent when off the clock. Hello Maxwell. Doing good?

Max: Hi Magnus! Doing great! Catarina said I can't drink, though.

Magnus: Well, don't tell her when you get drunk then.

Alec: When did our house become everyone's hangout place?

Max: Bout a year before I went off to college. Magnus is right. You tend to get kinda oblivious when you aren't at work. ... Is that a new cat?

Alec: Yeah, we have another cat now. I would tell you how that happened, but I honestly don't know. Her name is Princess Bubblegum.

Max: ...Magnus name her?

Alec: Raphael, actually.

Jace, from the kitchen: Simon! Give the jam back! I called dibs!

Then Max sees Simon running behind Alec through the living room, glass of jam clutched to his chest. Just moments later, Jace runs after him.
