“Understandable,” she nodded. Maybe it wasn’t like what he’d been through, but Ember had seen her share. Her father led a fascinating life, one that he wasn’t secretive about. There were times when things had happened and she wanted to forget them. “Bet he was your best friend out there, huh?” she asked. She couldn’t help but feel curious, having been stuck in Ithaca so long. “Fair enough,” she said, pulling the needle off the vinyl and shrugging a shoulder. “Lucky you, though,” she said. “I’m taking your class. I’d better get an A.”
Luca nodded at the girl. “Only one I had for most of the time I was out there.” When Luca was first in the military, he didn’t get assigned a dog, however after he moved ranks, he got to train Sadie from when she was a puppy and still had the pleasure to live with her. “I had her since she was born.” Luca let out a laugh. “It won’t be that easy. By the looks of it, many people in the class will need to utilize tutoring and office hours.” Luca was referring to the test he was grading. “I guess I’ll have to add a curve. No one, so far, has achieved anything higher than a 70.”

“Fantastic,” she said, retrieving the vinyl after flicking through a few more. She began setting up the record player, listening attentively, though she pretended only to be mildly interested. “Military boy. D’you get to do anything wild?” she asked, brows raising with the question. “I must compliment your choice in breed, however. I had one, too. Died a couple years ago. Irreplacable,” he said. “Sorry ‘bout that. But I bet this night is more memorable than most.”
Luca followed the girl’s every move with his eyes. “No. Not particularly.” He shrugged. “Nothing that I’d want to talk about anyway.” He looked up at Ember, trying to discard every memory from the time he served from his mind. Luca had to agree with her, though. German Shepherds were great dogs. “Especially in the force.” He nodded to himself. “Great companions.” He could go on all day about the times he had with his dog, but he didn’t want to bore the girl. “Possibly, but it doesn’t change the fact that I have work that needs to be done.”

She just nodded along, ignoring his final question and turning to face him. “Do you have any Talking Heads? Or Yes? The Clash?” she listed off, returning her attention back to the vinyls in search of something that appealed to her. “My dad had really good taste in music,” she mumbled, eyes narrowing as she attempted to read small fonts on the covers, flicking through each one. “What’s your story, anyway? Why you here so late? Couldn’t you do this at home? Tend to your wife and kids and family dog?”
Luca furrowed his eyebrows, thinking of what he had in his collection and what he didn’t. “Talking Heads. Should be closer to the back of the stack.” He watched her flip through the records he owned, her questions snapping him back. “My story.” He repeated. “I’ll give you a short version.” Luca sat up in his chair before standing and making his way over to Ember. He sat on the edge of the table that the record player sat. “I was in the military, straight out of high school and did my college work while I was deployed. Left the military, then came here to teach. No kids, family is off in another state, and one dog. German Shepard that was in the force with me.” With a shrug, he gave a slight smile. “I’m here because I can get things done quicker here, however, you aren’t helping the case.”

Mason had a puzzled look on her face for a moment before the obvious dawned on her. “What are you doing here old man.” Mason teased. She wasn’t aware faculty were invited, and with the mask on she hadn’t recognized the man in front of her.
With a shrug, Luca sat on one of the stools. “I didn’t want to miss seeing some of my students in their natural habitat.” He smiled slightly at Mason, before raising his mask up slightly. “I don’t look that old, do I?” His eyebrows raised, placing his mask back upon his face.

“I just fell and hit my head off a doorknob,” she whispered. “There’s a black eye forming, isn’t there? I’m never wearing heals again. Christ, I feel like I’m Jennifer Lawrence level looking for attention.”
Luca let out a slight laugh, his hand running over his chin for a second. “You must have a special talent.” However, he became serious after he realized that she was also being serious. “How did you even fall? Trip over your own feet?”

“You’re quite right, the only compulsory acessory was a mask.” Mason chuckled, looking around the room, “People do seem to be pairing up though, I suppose if we snuggle up they’d never know.” She gave a little giggle, taking the last mouthfull from her own glass. Finally, someone at this dance who wasn’t in a bad mood, or like a small nervous animal.
Luca raised his eyebrow at the girl. “I don’t think that will be necessary.” He took a drink from his glass, before handing it back to the bartender. “I could possibly be twice your age.” He stated simply.

“Just because it’s a dance doesn’t mean I need a date, I don’t need a man on my arm to make me look beautiful.”
Luca shrugged at the other. “No one said you needed a date.” He look to each side of him. “Doesn’t seem I have one either.” With that, he took a sip from his almost empty glass. Although, he wasn’t sure he was supposed to be at the ball, he didn’t mind. It was something to take him away from his work for a moment.

“Oh my god, the enthusiasm. Have you ever worked with Professor Roberts? The Environmental Science prof?” she asked, already making her way toward the record player to set up the music, immediately in search of Talking Heads. “He doesn’t let me do anything fun in his office.”
Luca rolled his eyes and finally gave in. He closed the cap on his pen and pushed the tests into his desk drawer. He watched her make her way to the vinyl. However, he was a guy, so if he said he didn’t check her out, he would be lying. Luca let his hand run down his face, remaining at his chin, running side to side for a moment. “Nope, I’ve never been around him. In fact, I’m not sure who he is.” With a shrug, Luca moved the chair back and propped his feet up on his desk, his arms going behind his head. “Students are particularly allowed in offices at this time of the night. I could see why he wouldn’t want you to do anything ‘fun’.” A faint smiled appear upon his lips. “I caved in. What do you want?”

Ariella chuckled at the professor’s words, hand nearly rubbing her eyes before she scolded herself with a reminder of the such detailed makeup she had been adorned with, placing the very same palm over her lap instead. “I thought so, too. But I’ve taken a look around myself and found nothing. You know? Sad.” She took a last sip from her drink before placing it over the counter, pale leg bouncing slowly and quietly while crossed over the other. “Even thought about ditching this place and like, go to a bakery or something. I bet it’s a lot more fun. This thing is getting more and more boring with every second.”
Luca shrugged. “You may have to make a bakery run.” His eyes roamed to her bouncing leg, the constant movement annoying him. Luca leaned forward and placed a hand on her leg. “Don’t use all your energy bouncing your leg. You’ll need it in the morning.” Luca flashed a smile at the girl, his hand returning to his glass. “Or maybe you should make a trip home before you drink more than you have.”

“Understand when I’m older,” she said, laughing lightly. Ember was making a game of this, like she had always done with men her father worked with. She liked to play with them, to grapple with their consciences. Bouncing up from her chair, she restlessly half-jogged/half-danced in her spot, sighing heavily. “How do you work without music?”
Luca furrowed his eyebrows at the girl. “If you want to put it that way, sure.” He shook his head and dived back into his grading. However, he couldn’t help but to peek up at the girl as she started to move. With a sigh, he sat back in his chair, taking off his glasses. He pointed to one of the corners in his office. “There’s a vinyl. Pick whatever record you want to play.” It wasn’t always that he would let a student stay this long in his office, especially if he was trying to get something done.

fairchildxari:
Green hues wandered across the room as the ginger found herself a seat, her second flute of champagne empty in her hand by now, soon replaced by the passing tray. The black dress was the perfect contrast to her pale skin, cheeks flushed with the way she had such a low tolerance to the alcohol in the pretty coloured drink. She had never really drunk more than a glass, and had never really gotten to an intoxicated state. Ariella had lost the count on the freshman and frat boys who had came around to try and sneak her to the dance floor or to get themselves her number for the following day. Her smile was the perfect, gentle refusal. While all could hide behind the stylish lace masks that night, she was still perfectly recognisable. With her tiny body and soft curves, orange colouring to her long locks. Maybe, for that reason - she decided to giggle a bit more with the bubbling liquid tickling her throat every time she took a sip. Tipsy, tipsy sunshine girl. “Do you happen to know if they have anything sweet to eat in this place?” The question poured from the red tinted lips as she looked over at the one who had just taken a seat by her side. “I’m hungry. And I heard there would be a cupcakes table. Lies.”
Luca wasn’t sure if he was even allowed to be at the ball, however, the mask covered his face and he thought it made him look younger than what he really was. He thought that he may have been able to fit in..if everyone was drunk. With a sigh, he sat at the bar and ordered a drink for himself, brushing off his suit. Luca heard a voice beside him and decided what more than to talk to someone while he waited for his drink. “I’m sure they have pretty much anything you’d like here.” Luca shrugged, grabbing his drink that was now sitting on the countertop. “Just take a look around or ask somebody to look around for you.” While he sipped from his glass, he examined the other. Obviously, had a few to drink. “I think it’d be best if you have someone look for you.” Luca raised his glass to the girl with a smile.

“You’re a very organized man,” was all she said in response to that, leaning back in her chair. She allowed herself this time to explore the room with her eyes, brows raising at his next words. “Oh yeah?” she asked, though she didn’t necessarily believe it. She couldn’t imagine anyone who struggled like she does ending up in a stable place.
Luca shook his head at the girl. “Far from it, I’m afraid.” He tried to concentrate on finishing grading the test that he had started before the other had come into his office. “Mhm.” Was all he said as he flipped through the pages. Once he finished grading it, he placed it in a new pile. “You’re what? A sophomore?” Luca paused. “You are just now getting into your professions courses that will benefit you most. The longer you’re in school, the more beneficial the classes get. You’ll understand soon enough.”

lunaloze:
She had been wondering the halls. Luna couldn’t sleep, so a walk might ease her mind. After all, maybe it was stress from all the exams. She saw a light turned on in a room down the hall she was walking on. She let curiosity take over her and made her way to it. She recognized a teacher that she had seen around. She let her hair hita bit of her face and a smikr appeared on her face. “Late night?”
Luca nodded without turning around to face the door. He leaned forward once more and engaged himself into the tests he had been grading. “Got a deadline.” Was all he said, placing his glasses upon his face once more. Luca had hoped that his shortness would get the other to leave, but he still felt their presence. Putting down his pen, he turned toward the door. “Looking for something?”

ella-reddington:
Ella wandered the halls of the office building, searching for her history professor. She had been looking for over ten minutes and was about to give up. The whole building was eerily dark and empty, which set Ella on edge. She was just about to leave when a light at the end of another corridor caught her eye. She smiled, thankful for the comfort of knowing she wasn’t alone in the blackness. Gently, Ella knocked on the ajar door and pushed it open, leaning her small body on the doorframe. “Looks like you’re the last one standing.” Ella said with a gentle smile.
Luca looked in the direction of the door before sitting up straight, once more. He turned his spinning chair in the direction of the voice. “Not for long.” With one of his hands, he ran it through his well-kept hair. The only light in the room was his desk light, considering Luca got most of his work done in a poorly lit setting, because it calmed him. It was hard to tell who the person was in the doorway, but he knew it wasn’t one of his students. “Are you lost or need hlpe with something?”
