“Fun for me, I am very selfish.” He knew he was and didn’t care truth be told he only cared about three people and one of them had died in the new world. “Ironhaven? I didn’t see you in the new world, were you scared of the war?” He asked casually, it actually played to his favor that she was from Ironhaven, he had learned the game by someone from there and had played with many soldiers in the new world. “I’m from Bearoria.” He made his first move, his face still unreadable not letting show the great hand he had right now.
“selfish? one of your many virtues, i presume,” guinevere sneered. but at his next statement, she settled her cards on the table, face down. “i was not in the new world, no. but not because i am afraid of war. it seems as though intelligence is not one of your many virtues, or you would know that children of ironhaven are made for war. i am not an exception. however, my father was fatally injured in battle; i stayed home to take care for him,” she hissed. settling herself, she continued, “now, i could easily forgive your heinous pride in spite of mortifying mine. or would you like to insult me further?”

princedanielofironhaven:
Setting: Ironhaven, 5 years ago. @lvckhearts
“I’m bored.” Daniel sighed in frustration, lounging around one of the many sitting rooms in the Ironhaven castle. He was sprawled out on a velvet loveseat, his entire disposition casually flamboyant, long limbs taking up most of the couch. He sat opposite his older cousin, Guinevere, the two of them half playing what seemed like a never-ending card game. He threw down a card onto the marble table separating them, making his move and waiting for her to do the same. “There has to be something more exciting than this game of cards to do around here.” He insisted dramatically. As Daniel grew older, the life of Ironhaven began feeling more and more suffocating with each passing day. He felt trapped in the castle, trapped behind the stone walls of his home with all of his ghosts he would rather forget. He was curious for the life that others lead beyond the castle. From childhood he had daydreamed about what it would be like to be an outsider, and with age his curiosity had only grown.
guinevere was eleven when her mother died. only one year later, the beloved queen of ironhaven died. magnus didn’t need ( or necessarily want ) the girl’s sympathy; but daniel was different. though already cousins, the two quickly became friends and confidants over the deaths of their respective mothers. thus, here we are: nine years later, playing cards. perhaps it was pure irony that they were even friends. daniel, fifteen and flamboyant, was sprawled on a couch on one side of a marble table. guinevere, twenty-one and timid, sat in a proper fashion on a couch on the other side. she was quite an avid fan of cards, but she couldn’t stand sitting in a corset for this long. guinevere was more compliant to the restrictive tendencies of the court, but like daniel, she had always wondered what life was like outside of castle walls. “i think i may have an idea,” guinevere said, putting down her cards. “i overheard some servants talking about an underground tunnel. is that exciting enough for you?” she asked, a ( genuine ) smile on her face.

khaileefell:
She watched the brunette fan herself and understood completely – the heat was a big change after spending so much time in Kradaeca and the New World, a change Khai had also not yet really adjusted to. “If anything, the wine probably makes it worse,” she said, knowing her cheeks would be red with another glass or two. “But no matter. We’ve survived worse than intense heat.”
“you have a point,” guinevere mused, “but in spite of such a possibility, we still drown ourselves in hot wine because it is all we have.” she was never one who liked to drink excessively, for she enjoyed having full control of her body and her mind. some would say that she was wound too tight, but she liked to think that she was a weapon that only she could wield. “oh, i definitely agree. thank the gods that the heat cannot wield a sword.”

“I understand. You did the right thing staying by his side.” He knew if his father ever fell ill and they were at war, Magnus would go to the war, Octavius would be very angry if Magnus stayed by his side taking care of him. “Well more then finding a wife, my father chose her for me. “
“i keep telling myself that,” she lamented, eyes looking away. she knew that her father would rather die than serve his king. his whole life ( his childhood, adolescence, adulthood ) was dedicated to serving the army, but now that he was crippled beyond recovery, he seemingly had no will to live. “oh,” guinevere mused. “do you think you could love her?”

“What made you believe that? Anyway that was your mistake.” He sighed and stopped the urge of rolling his eyes, he was used to confident women, and everything, but the one here was a bit too much for his liking. “So where are you from.” He asked casually ignoring her last comment and looking at his card. he then placed them down in the table, his expression unreadable.
“my sincerest apologies if i am mistaken, but you did mention ‘fun’ when you approached me,” she shrugged. though it was her mother who taught her the rules of the game, she employed idle soldiers from her husband’s regiment. they were the ones who taught her to play dirty, but because of the ornate dresses and the flowery facade, look divine whilst doing so. “ironhaven. and you?”

morrigansilverwind:
There is hesitation written all over Morrigan’s face when presented with this woman’s question. Instinct encourages her to shrug her shoulders and insist nothing is amiss, to blame tiredness for her questionable demeanour. She was a nobody, it wasn’t as if she actually mattered. However, would lies do anyone any good? It was true that Morrigan knew nothing of the noblewoman’s intentions, but perhaps some of what she said was true and she’d feel unburdened by speaking her sorrows aloud. “My daughter died.” The words spill from her mouth in a quiet rush as if she’s afraid further hesitation will rob her of her nerve. “In the New World, the castle was attacked by pirates and she–” Morrigan swallows a lump in her throat and looks away.
guinevere didn’t know exactly why she asked such a question. many would even go as far as to wonder why guinevere was speaking to the woman at all. as a woman with a title, she was often isolated from those who didn’t. then again, guinevere didn’t know exactly why she didn’t opt for a life as an assassin, or why she didn’t strive for a higher position in the army. that was a lie. she knew exactly why. but it wouldn’t have been appropriate. not for a woman of her station. guinevere’s thoughts often drift to this very dilemma every once in a while. guinevere’s face fell as she spoke. “oh, i am so sorry,” she consoled, hands ( subconsciously ) moving to hold those of the woman. ten and fourteen, guinevere, ten and fourteen. “i would encourage you to keep speaking, to drain the blood from the wound in a kind of way,” she said, “but would you like to go somewhere else? perhaps somewhere less crowded?”

heopyros:
pyros’ blinked, unable to believe the word that had just tumbled out of her mouth. the absolute nerve of some women was infuriating. however, still, pyros knew that even in his anger, he would not play into her demands and join her demented game of cards – even as innocent as a round of cards may seem. ” as my siblings would say, simply no fun. “ the duke said plainly, crossing his arms. “ it was an unfortunate birth defect – i am unable to enjoy myself. “
guinevere observed the man in front of her. she could see, in his eyes, that her words ( playful and harmless as they were ) were doing something to him. she briefly considered playing into this, see how far she could push him, but that was too much work, and it was simply too hot to put in that much effort for a result that wasn’t beneficial to anyone. at his deadpanned answer, her lighthearted facade begin to fade. “do your siblings really say that of you?”

“But also when it will be busiest; full of everyone else trying to escape the hottest part of the day.” He should have had the same foresight to organise a wardrobe for the warm weather to be waiting for him in dracborough when he arrived. “It’s not for long I suppose.”
“then i suppose i shall do it now,” guinevere mused. “for i do not want to look like a fool in front of everyone.” at the realization of what she’d just implied, she went back to correct herself. “not that you look like a fool. just a bit silly, perhaps.” but at the realization of what he’d just implied, her lighthearted facade ( slightly ) faltered. “what do you mean by that?”

the game was very well known to luca. he had played it many times in a life that he acts never happened. the thought of the game brought a small smile upon his lips, just a gentle one in the woman’s direction with a small nod. “ i know that game well. haven’t played it in years. ” his fingers reached out for the cards, taking nine of his own and training his eyes back on her. “ though i have to say, you’ve picked a game that tends to keep me honest. it’s hard to trick you when we are simply going by what our cards say. don’t you agree? ”
“would you prefer a different game?” guinevere asked politely. ( she can still hear her mother in her mind, across from her at a similar table. guinevere had asked why she requested such a simple game. she saw that she was wearing a ring with an exceptionally crafted emerald at its center. it was the ring. ) “i would agree. although, it may be safe to presume that i have already cheated,” she mused. “but then, i may be lying about being dishonest.”

“I don’t lose.” He said simply, Silas was one of the best at card games in Bearoria, his sword instructor from Ironhaven had been the one that had thought him how to play, and then he refined his skills playing with all sorts of people. He of course wasn’t going to be intimidated by a girl who acted so over confident. “So if you’re done trying to act like you are the best, deal.”
guinevere’s smile dropped as he spoke. “and i was led to believe that you were going to be fun,” she mused, still shuffling the cards. in a matter of seconds, this man -- this stranger -- made her blood boil. because she was a woman, it was expected of her to make herself smaller, to never engage. but because she was a soldier of ironhaven, it was in her blood to never back down. “if you would like to keep such a reputation of yours intact, then i would suggest you walk away from the table and find an opponent who will let you win. otherwise...” she dealed him a stack of cards.

leovance:
“Are you a healer?” He asked sceptically. She certainly didn’t look like one, and he knew most healers carried around their medical kits even when off-duty just in case they were needed, yet she was improvising. Leo listened to the details of her life with limited interest, even as she reassured him the vial did not contain poison. “I would have been able to tell from the scent.” He remarked. It was not unknown for fighters to sneak poison into the arena and he had learned to identify it quickly. The scent of rose and sage was soft enough that he knew her words were true, as an overpowering scent would have indicated the flowers and herbs were covering the scent of something much deadlier. “Fine. Treat them if it will make you stop fussing.”
guinevere paused at his question. for many days and nights she often considered telling her dad that she wanted to be a healer’s apprentice. but she knew, in her family, that to quit training for another occupation would be considered high treason. of course, she found a loophole, but war never satisfied her. “not professionally, no,” she said, applying the dampened cloth to his wounds, the blood turning ivory into crimson. “but i was trained by one, so i am just as good as one.” the profuse bleeding was dwindling, and guinevere continued to hold a clean cloth to the opening, applying pressure. the crowds from the fight were still dispersing, yet the market was still bustling. merchants were calling; children were playing. but there was silence between them. breaking it, she said, “when i was younger, i wanted to be a healer.” this was barely an intimate detail, but she still couldn’t help feeling as though she was abiding by rule fourteen while violating rule ten.

xacrys:
—— if there’s one thing xacry ramano is interested in is games. card, mainly, have been something he’s been fascinated with for quite some time, so the pretty girl in front of him is rather piking his interest. he quips his brow, leaning forward on his elbows to glance more closely at her. the two haven’t met, he’s sure – if they had, he would have recognized her. “i would quite fancy a game of cards, m’dear. what shall we be playing?,” he responds with a curt nod and purse of his lips. he’s interested to see where this leads, truly.
the man was unfamiliar. but then again, almost all of the people here were unfamiliar. as for the people she actually knew, that was so complicated that it was best to save it for another day. of course, she’d done well to learn the names of the royals and nobles and staff were here, but it’s difficult to tell who is who from just a list of names. “finally, a willing opponent. some people act as though i am requesting to pull out their teeth,” guinevere muses, dealing him a stack of cards. “your choice: alouette or all fours?”

theon-cassain:
Theon smiled politely at the woman “I’m sorry but I must say no, I have to look for prince Adair and prepare everything so we can travel to our home as soon as we can.” He was good at this type of games but as he grew up and he had more responsibilities he had stopped playing. Maybe once at his home country were more settled he could relax more.
guinevere’s smile faltered slightly at the man’s rejection of her offer. “i am sure that the prince is capable of taking care of himself,” guinevere mused. but after a second thought, she leaned forward towards the man. “correct me if i am wrong, but prince adair is from kradaeca? and we are we not headed to norden because the plague does not fare well in hot climates?”

“yes pirates.” He said with a sigh as he recalled all the things they lived through in the New World. “I was surprised your family didn’t come with us to the new world to fight them but maybe it was for the best.” He nodded “Well it should be fun enough. I must go with my future wife so we’ll see how that goes.”
“i suppose it was for the best,” guinevere mused. “as my father is in no condition for battle, and the best healers left ironhaven to tend to the royals, leaving my brother and i to fend for our family’s estate.” she briefly thought of her ailing father, but pushed the thoughts away. “future wife? it seems as though i have missed so much. who is she? oh magnus, i am so pleased that you have found a wife. i wish you many heirs and years of happiness.”

rickwestfall:
A few people glanced up when the door swung open, but Rick was the only one to still pay attention when their new arrival explained she had the wrong room. “The palace is a labyrinth,” He called out to her. “Guests never find their way around. We usually assign them a guard to be their guide, but with so many visitors it’s difficult.” And a lot of the guards were currently drunk off their asses. “Join us, and we’ll show you where your room is later.”
to spend part of her afternoon with drunk guards wasn’t exactly part of her agenda. in fact, it was far from it. usually, she’d turn down the offer and insist that she could find it on her own, but then she remembered that she was far from home. but on the statement that they’d help her find her room, her interest was piqued and she stepped further into the room. “i do hope your inebriation will not inhibit you from being able to find my room later,” she mused, doing her best to keep a modest stature.
