HEADCANON : FEAST operations

one of the ways that feast is able to offer so many resources is by basically absorbing other smaller orgs under their umbrella. it's very very hard for an ngo non profit to survive and get the funding that they need, but by combining with feast, it makes it easier to apply for and get approved for grants & get other funding. this is part of how feast is able to provide such a wide range of services for people.

a good example of this is the free rideshare services that feast is able to provide. feast itself doesn't have the funding for transportation cars or buses, so they would never be able to do this on their own unless volunteers/staff were willing to just drive people around in their own cars (something they, regretfully, they can't do or it could risk some of their funding). but there's a smaller local ngo that is trying to provide this for mostly the homeless, young, & elderly around the city who can't use the subway system as reliability or safely for any number of reasons. they become a full-time section of feast & now there's a much larger network for this org to reach people AND feast can apply for grants for them and then get more money to this smaller group of people trying to do good! they might not have their own identity as a separate org anymore, but there's also strength in numbers.

not all non-profits that they work with get fully absorbed under the feast umbrella, though. there are also some companies who just offer workshops or temporary services. during tax season, a local tax accountant along with his staff will donate his services each year to set up free workshops or sessions at feast for people who need help with their taxes whether that just be people who struggle with their taxes, have unusual circumstances, or don't speak english and are faced with additional barriers. working through feast helps make their jobs easier because feast will handle the logistics & have a large base to work with, while in return they still get to provide specialized services to their people!

"it's nice to see you, too," the same hand that had been shaking his earlier now darts out to bat at jess' arm affectionately. still trying to stamp down on that natural instinct of hers to reach out, to touch and to hold onto anything she loves, it's the most that andie can manage to not loop her arm in his or ... it'd be flirty, maybe too forward for two people who haven't seen each other in so long, if it wasn't coming from andie who's just like this.

"i'm working at feast. it's a homeless shelter in the city," and at night i wear a mask and swing on webs to save people using the superpowers that i got when i was bit by a spider, she doesn't say, "they do good work with a lot of good people. we fill 70 beds a night, make enough food for about 500 people every day. it's..." talking about feast has brought andie to life: she's glowing from the inside, so full of pride and adoration for this organization that it's palpable in the air around them. "hundreds of hands weaving a safety net to help catch this city's most vulnerable and overlooked. it's really something to see, jess." there's an almost dazed smile as she talks about feast. it's both the easiest and most overwhelming thing to imagine—all these good people doing their best to help. sometimes it catches in her throat when she thinks too much about it, like there's not enough space in her body to contain all the love and pride she has here.

it takes her a second to snap out of it. her smile gets a bit wider, more present around the edges and her eyes crinkle as she does, attention turning back to jess. "what about you? what are you doing nowadays?"

the thought of running into anyone from high school would normally be far more chilling for jess, it's not the worst case scenario here. andie was always friendly, even when he said very little, and she never gave him any shit as he might have expected from anyone else. jess was amicable to an extent, never friendly enough to consider her a friend, but he never felt the need to give her shit either. as far as high school classmates go, andie may be one of the few he isn't bothered to see.

"i'm ..." he's never really sure how to answer that question, actually. good? kind of? better than he used to be, but there's always something new to think about now. none of the honest answers seem like a good way to start a conversation. "... doing okay right now. i've been away for awhile." it's a bit of an understatement, to say the least. he feels like he's been a hundred different versions of himself since sophomore year. "it's nice to see you — i'd say i wasn't really expecting to see you, but i didn't really know what i was expecting at all?"

but andie is still as bright as he remembers her being then, it seems natural for her. he's a little bit less of a recluse than he used to be; sophomore jess would have walked in a different direction the second he caught a familiar face. "i guess, um — what d'you do these days? or what have you been doing since i left?"

v. CONFIDENCE. hands behind back, hands on lapels of coat, steepled hands, baring teeth in a grin, rolling shoulders, tipping head back but maintaining eye contact, chest puffed up, shoulders back, finger guns.

vi. INSECURITY & ANXIETY. chewing pen or pencil, rubbing thumb over opposite thumb, biting fingernails, hands in pockets, elbow bent, closed gestures, clearing throat, “ whew ” sound, picking or pinching flesh, fidgeting in chair, hand covering mouth whilst speaking, poor eye contact, tugging at pants whilst seated, jingling money in pockets, tugging at ear, perspiring hands, playing with hair, swaying, playing with pointer or marker, smacking lips, sighing, rocking on balls of feet, flexing fingers sporadically.

vii. FRUSTRATION. short breaths, “ tsk ” sounds, tightly clenched hands, fist-like gestures, pointing index finger, running hand through hair, rubbing back of neck, snarling, revealing teeth, grimacing, sharp-eyed glowers with notable tension in brows,shoulders back, head up - defensive posturing, clenching of jaw, grinding of teeth, nostrils flaring, heavy exhales.

andie spins on her heel so she's walking backwards, following kie's explanation literally, if not quite understanding it fully. jump a quad is a little lost on her, and andie could maybe take a guess at a triple or a double if she saw one, but the sentiment she thinks she understands: they can't see the forest for the trees.

"no i know, i know you're right." it sounds so easy when khione explains it. like all andie needs to do is sit back and let them figure it out because to do anything more really isn't even fair at all anyways. she puts one foot behind her and then the other. never once in her life has she been able to not meddle in something involving the people she cares about. "sometimes i just want to—" her words are cut off by a frustrated groan and shakes her hands out in front of her in what resembles more than anything an imitation of homer simpson strangling his son, "shake them. but you're probably right. i need to let them... jump." she says it like she's talking herself into it, and then noticeably switches topics, pausing as she forces herself to put this one to bed. "lunch sounds great. i would love to do lunch. where were you thinking?"

at least andie agrees. (whether she agrees with khione or if she's glad that someone agrees with her is neither here nor there.) khione isn't really involved with the firefighters.

she knows captain nash not as the firefighter captain, for example, but she knows (of) him first and foremost as heidi shatsky's partner; she knows him as one of the twin cities junior pairs champions.

which is exactly why most of her sage wisdoms are related to the ice. "i hear you," she says, because she does, "but an, you can't force them to jump a quad if they're barely ready for a triple or a double, you know? sometimes we - as quote-unquote 'outsiders looking in' see more, see the paths that people could or should take, see the potential of what they can be together - but it's up to them to make the jump and land on their feet."

a beat and then: "i like to take the people i'm close to out for lunch. maybe they should try that too." khione nods her head, then. "just a low-stakes lunch with no expectations but enough space to hash things out. speaking of which, i know this great spot. do you want to come with? maybe it'll land better with your uncle if you're the one recommending it."

there's a second where andie decides if she is gonna forget christine asked, her gaze easy across the table. but it's just idle curiosity, and nothing about the nurse says it's dire in the least.   "i have to be at spock's shoulder in..."   andie taps the screen of her padd to light it up,   "twelve minutes."   the screen fades back to black and andie lifts her gaze again.   "i'm shadowing him today. which means i will be on the bridge, actually. so if you want me to pass on a message..."   it's going to be an interesting day. it's not going to be her first day spent on the bridge, and spock has never been anything other than kindly straightforward, but something about his blunt scientific questioning always leaves andie feeling a little bit like she's taking a test that she forgot to study for. for a ship that is so science-focused, andie is woefully understudied in her hard sciences.

christine is not quick to lose hope. sam's mere presence is not enough to transform la'an into the wicked witch of the west ⸻ tight braids somehow growing horns when she is angry, christine swears ⸻ but a babbling presentation from the man himself? that'll do the trick.
