Verizon’s 4K ban is now in effect and here’s how to get around it

As of August 23rd Verizon has implemented a network-wide ban on 4K content by throttling all mobile video to 720p and all tablet video to 1080p.
If this isn’t bad enough Verizon has also stated that any provider deemed to be a video service would be throttled to 10 Mbps.

Other mobile networks are also implementing similar throttling measures to their “unlimited” plans which means users won’t be able to enjoy 4K content and whilst this isn’t a big deal for most users and devices it’s still an issue where providers are dictating what users can do with their data.
Thankfully users can overcome this and enjoy the 4K experience especially if they have an unlimited data plan by using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) Which encrypts your internet traffic and therefore masks its content from your provider.
Users can get some great VPN’s by using our VPN Guide here.

Google assistant for iOS now available
Three months ago at Google IO they unveiled the new Google assistant for iOS available to the USA, the announcement was a big deal and the assistant was actually able to do some things better than Siri itself.

Today Germany, France, and the United Kingdom have finally been included in the rollout. The app is 137 megabytes in size and requires iOS 9.1 or later. Unfortunately even with iOS 11 beta it seems as though the Google assistant can still toggle more settings than Siri.

How to enable Alexa on your Android device
Amazon has finally made Alexa available to android devices, instead of making it a standalone app the have added it to the shopping app presumably to encourage users to purchase more things. To access Alexa you need to head to the Google Play Store and download the Amazon shopping app.
Once the app has downloaded open the app and you will see a microphone icon in the upper right corner, above the search bar.
The microphone icon was previously a basic voice search function that you could use to find stuff to buy or track your orders, however now when you tap the microphone icon, you can access the full power of Alexa. The first time you tap the microphone icon, you’ll be met with a brief informational card about Alexa, tap try Alexa.
Once Alexa is enabled, tapping the microphone will automatically cue up the voice assistant, and you can begin speaking a command. Just as with the Echo if you don’t issue a command within a second or so, Alexa will timeout.
Using this icon you can do things like listen to the news, stream music from Amazon Music, listen to your audiobooks, have Alexa read your Kindle books to you, control your smart home. Users are also able to use the icon to Play games and enable skills.
Other ways to experience Alexa for Free is currently through Amazon.com where you can purchase the Amazon dash wand for $20 which comes with a $20 credit.

When we should see press invites for Apple's Autumn event 2017

Every year Apple send out it’s press event invite in August and this year we expect no difference, but knowing exactly when those invites will be sent is not a certainty, however looking at Apple’s past invite trends we see that Apple tends to stick as close to the end of August as possible.

image from Mac rumours google search
For the past three years Apple has announced their Autumn events as follows:
Monday 29th Aug 2016
Thursday 27th AUGUST 2015
Thursday 28th August 2014
If Apple sticks to this trend we should see press invites sent out on Monday 28th August as any dates before or after are either too far away or too close to the end of August. Now Apple does like to occasionally break the cycle and mix it up but going off the current trends this is our best guess.

LowerInstall (Jailbreak Tweak)
It’s been awhile since we recommended a jailbreak tweak, however LowerInstall is one we just couldn’t ignore.

Using the repo http://julioverne.github.io/ users will be able to install apps not necessarily intended for that OS version. An example of this is the Clips app which requires iOS 10.3 for no apparent reason other than Apple wants users on the newest firmware possible, however using LowerInstall users can install this on older firmware.
Not every app will work as sometimes there is a genuine reason as to why an app will need a newer firmware but this will make jailbroken users lives better.

How to stop Revokes
Apple is constantly on the attack against signing services and with a whistleblower out there after having his app denied for stealing users data. A certificate has been created that can be installed to stop the revoking process.
Once installed the certificate can be found under VPN settings but VPN does not need to toggled on and users are good to go. This works on both cellular and Wifi, however if you restart your device you need to leave your device unlocked for around 10 seconds for the certificate to work.
I’m sure we will see more and more signing services implement this feature or their own version soon, who knows if Apple will overcome this at any point but for now it works, you can install the certificate from here. Full credit to @JosephShenton who is currently using AppDB’s dns server temporarily in a tweet Joseph confirmed “I am currently using AppDB’s dns server temporarily while I get mine up and running which will also allow installation of expired and revoked cert.”
