Slaughter House 5
I couldn't take pictures so I copy pasted the text. Hope this works.
'Anything else I can do for you boys?' said the officer.
'Yes, sir,' said one of the scouts. 'We'd like to stick together for the rest of the war, sir. Is there some way you can fix it so nobody will ever break up the Three Musketeers?'
I think the fact that this set of lines comes before the excerpt about his father, the swimming pool, and his dying mother is super interesting. Right away we know that this solider would rather skin than swim, especially in the war. He is saved by another solider multiple times so for him to apart of a group, something solid and safe, is something he isnt used to unless he is gifted with the grace of quiet sinking. I think this shows his duality within the story and hopefully comes up laer to explain more character depth.
"Billy Pilgrim went on skating, doing tricks in sweat-socks, tricks that most people would consider impossible-making turns, stopping on a dime and so on. The cheering went on, but its tone was altered as the hallucination gave way to time-travel.
Billy stopped skating, found himself at a lectern in a Chinese restaurant in Ilium, New York, on an early afternoon in the autumn of 1957."
I personally love the way this story jumps through time seamlessly. When I visualize it, I can picture setting, body movement, coming out of movement into a new setting. As a visual reader, not only does this make the story super interesting to think about, but it also makes the story more effective, as im sure most war heros just drift through lifr this way due to trauma.

Puddnead Wilson.
There's a few lines in this reading that I feel could discuss a deeper connection. One of them being “polished like a mirror.” I think that this is interesting considering the self reflection Tom had to do once he discovered he was one sixteenth black. The idea of his initial feelings about this is something that can cause intense emotional turmoil, especially in this time where these two different kinds of people are very clearly separated, sometimes self reflection can be dangerous or bring out the worst in a character. Also, the line engraved on it are the ciphers or names of its long line of possessors is an interesting choice that could be symbolic to Tom asd well. For most of his life he knew himself to be white and respected the people he assumed came before him. Relating the procession of the knife to the long line of white privilege could help readers to understand that this long line of white privilege is also a violent heritage that is really just to intimidate and put fear into people like Tom. Furthermore, not only is solid ivory symbolic of wealth and superiority, but it also represents the butchering of animals. The stem of the knife being made of ivory could symbolize the way in which white people think their duty in life is to “butcher the animals” or silence people of color. Also, for Tom specifically this now creates a struggle for him having to be content wit the idea that this line he is choosing to follow is against what he truly is deep down. Being mixed can create internal feelings of guilt and an obligation to choose a side especially in a time where oppression was very racially motivated.

1) this specific image spoke to me because, as a fiery feminist, I see this girl and know what life will ultimately turn into for her. Every woman who is born in this timer period is just another statistic. If they don’t end up as a prostitute they end up in the obituaries. Women in New York at this time have no sense of self or even any cognitive functions of their true potential.
2) I think Crane understands privilege thinking. I think that he knows people who haven’t ever been in a situation like this won’t have any interest in reading things like this, because dealing with trauma is hard. And who wants to read something hard?!? But when we paint the narrative as fiction, the information is easier to digest, and almost more fun to read. I think that when we paint these characters as such, and not as real people, these stories become easier to digest and more people are interested in reading them. I think that this is a great use of reader interest because ultimately it makes important stories like these circulate more when they are labeled as “fiction”.

: proposing or advocating impractically ideal social and political schemes
: impossibly ideal : VISIONARY
I chose this corner of my room because I have put lots of work into making this the witchiest, most intricate place in the whole house. I have been collecting things of this interest for a while, and finally have room and objects to put on display. This feels very utopian to me because not only are some of these objects handmade or only seen rarely, but they emit a really magical feeling for me and are something I wish were more common in modern times.

“of, relating to, or marked by literary or artistic realism : accurately representing what is natural or real”
For this picture, I chose a coffee cup because some of the most realistic and guaranteed things life can provide is the mundane. I believe the things we hold close to us actually have more meaning than we give it credit. Sitting down with old friends for coffee, sipping on tea and reflecting on parts of our lives we wished we had done differently, putting pens and pencils into a coffee cup because, well, where else should we put them? Mugs, to me, encapsulate a very real sense of existing and are one of the most realistic/mundane objects we will always have.
