                        taking  his  key  out  of  the  mailbox  keyhole  ,  the  officer  looked  down  at  the  array  of  mail ;  flipping  through  it  and  already  sorting  through  the  things  that  had  his  name  on  it  versus  garrett’s  name  on  it  . arranging  it  in  a  way  to  where  he  can  tell  the  white  envelopes  apart  ,  he  cleared  his  throat  with  a  shake  of  his  head  at  the  sight  of  his  daughter’s  most  recent  progress  report  .  he  knew  what  it  was  based  on  the  school  logo  in  the  corner  along  with  the  asterisk  sighting  :  report  card  .  “  don’t  they  do  all  this  digitally  now  ??  “  he  asked  himself  out  loud  before  looking  up  at  the  other  .  “  in  your  opinion ,  do  you  think  a  car  is  a  …  valid  gift  for  a  seventeen  year  old  ??  or  …  would  you  wait  until  eighteen  ?? “  call  it  divorcee  parent  guilt  ,  but  stella  had  been  talking  about  getting  her  own  set  of  wheels  ever  since  she  got  her  hands  on  her  license  last  year  .

          she  absentmindedly  flips  through  the  mail  .  eyes  briefly  scanning  the  contents  of  each  envelope  before  deciding  if  it’s  anything  of  importance  .  junk  mail  .  advertisements  .  oh  look  ,  a  letter  from  her  college’s  alumni  network  .  lyra  looks  up  at  the  question  .  “  i  guess  that  all  depends  on  the  car  you’re  getting  her  .  a  new  car  ?  might  be  a  little  OVERKILL  .  think  about  the  insurance  premiums  .  ”  says  the  last  part  in  jest  .  “  a  pre-owned  car  ?  a  slightly  more  valid  gift  for  a  seventeen  year  old  .  ”

                 it  was  sort  of  a  routine  at  this  point  ever  since  he  moved  into  wisteria  :  get  up  ,  get  a  work - out  or  two  in  ,  bother  bea  ,  answer  a  couple  of  emails  and  then  head  to  the  office  . but  there  was  a  wrench  thrown  into  his  ritual  …  the  worst  of  the  worst  .  the  fuckin’  sauna  is  still  out  of  order .  STILL  .  with  an  audible  smack  of  his  lips  ,  emilio  tossed  his  towel  over  his  shoulder  ;  a  tsk  following  .  “  soooo  we  pay  how  much  to  live  here  ??  the  sauna  and  the  peloton  is  still  fucked  up  ??  …  i  don’t  wanna  be  THAT  GUY  but  i  think  i  gotta  go  complain  and  be  THAT  GUY  .  what  do  they  call  those  male  karens  …  is  it  kevin  …  ??  “ 

          she  slows  her  breathing  ,  exhaling  as  she  lowers  herself  back  into  her  starting  position  and  letting  go  of  the  pull-up  bar  .  head  turns  to  face  emilio  as  she  listens  to  his  rant  ,  shaking  her  head  fondly  in  response  .  “  i  can’t  speak  for  the  sauna  but  the  peloton  was  working  just  fine  for  me  maybe  you  just  have  terrible  luck  ,  emilio  ,  ”  lyra  will  teasingly  point  out  .  “  i  always  thought  the  male  version  of  a  karen  would  be  ken  .  kevin  is  a  close  contender  ,  i’ll  give  you  that  .  ”

          lips  curl  up  into  a  small  smile  as  she  chuckles  .  “  who  knows  ?  maybe  it’s  intentional  .  ”  eyes  trail  over  the  two  pieces  once  more  before  focusing  her  attention  back  to  will  .  smile  turns  into  a  half  smirk  when  he  says  she’s  right  .  “  i’d  like  to  think  i  usually  am  ,  ”  she  jokes  .  “  a  career  change  ?  unfortunately  no  .  art  is  more  of  a  …  hobby  .  ”  and  lyra  is  good  at  her  job  .  she  loves  it  .  that  and  she  doesn’t  think  she  could  give  all  of  that  up  .  “  and  a  supporter  of  the  arts  .  what  are  those  pieces  for  anyway  ?  if  you  don’t  mind  me  asking  .  some  sort  of  new  gallery  opening  i  don’t  know  about  ?  ”

• the hesitation before he speaks hangs in the air, palpable. ' you know... i think you might be onto something. and every time i close my eyes, i see the inverted versions. ' small smile appears, an attempt at a half-assed joke; tone doesn't vary, signifying his decision to just... leave it at that. william eyes the piece she chooses, a quick suck of his breath before answering. ' you're right. ' he'll shove both photos back in his portfolio, shutting it with a feigned drama. ' ever thought about switching careers ? i can put a good word in for you. '

Jonathan was camped out at a table, surrounded by open books standing up  vertically, a map of the county and his laptop. He resembled more of a Dungeons and Dragons DM rather than a lawyer on his fourth hour of research. He could have chosen a library to study in quietly, but he preferred the bustle of the store. It kept him awake and alert, something he would need if his night was going to continue like this.

He groaned audibly, rubbing his eyes. “God, I think I need a break. My brain hurts. Like, it actually hurts, it’s sore.” Jonathan stood from the table, stretching. “I’m gonna go look at some records. You wanna come?”

          footsteps  halt  in  front  of  a  nearby  table  .  hand  reaches  out  to  pick  up  a  children’s  book  that  had  caught  her  interest  .  flipping  through  it  ,  lyra  debates  if  it’s  worth  getting  it  for  her  daughter  .  at  the  sound  of  another’s  voice  ,  she  glances  up  .  a  look  of  amusement  encompasses  her  features  at  the  sight  before  her  .  an  interesting  choice  to  work  at  this  bookstore  in  particular  .  “  i  don’t  think  being  productive  here  is  helping  ,  ”  she’ll  joke  ,  the  corners  of  her  lips  curling  up  into  a  playful  grin  .  “  only  if  you  don’t  mind  the  extra  company  .  maybe  i’ll  get  lucky  again  and  find  a  rare  sinatra  on  vinyl  .  ”

' which one has less of a i'm a conceited asshole who doesn't care and more of a i'm a struggling artist with a real voice ? ' pause, glancing up at them. ' i think i've been staring for too long. dare i call it a day ? '

“Oh come on..I’m getting late for work,” Kashvi murmured as she glanced down at her phone screen, checking the time that clearly told her the store was going to open in less than eight minutes. One of the perks of owning her own store of course was that she actually had someone else there to open the bookstore and she was really just going to be working in the back office. But that didn’t mean she was comfortable showing up late. Of course it was her fault for reading that one extra chapter in the morning before she got ready for work which caused her entire day to get derailed. “Yup, it’s official…I’m going to be late and set a very good example for my newbie employee that starts today,” she said almost under her breath–not at all aware of others listening to her inner monologue. 

          gaze  shift  up  from  her  phone  to  the  pick-up  counter  to  see  when  her  coffee  will  be  ready  .  the  great  thing  about  her  job  is  that  there  are  no  set  hours  .  but  she’s  also  worked  hard  to  be  able  to  come  and  go  as  she  pleases  .  lyra’s  attention  shifts  when  she  hears  the  other  woman  speak  .  eyes  dart  around  to  see  if  she’s  speaking  to  anyone  in  particular  .  “  i  don’t  think  you  should  beat  yourself  up  over  being  a  little  late  to  work  .  it  happens  .  and  i  assume  it  doesn’t  happen  often  ?  ”

001.  lyra  camryn  lau  is  conceived  in  hong  kong  and  born  into  a  working  class  family  in  san  francisco,  ca.  she  inherits  her  father’s  charm  and  her  mother’s  cynicism.

 it’s  not  long  before  lyra  is  introduced  to  her  siblings.  and  living  in  san  francisco  is  no  easy  feat.  with  her  parents  constantly  working  to  make  ends  meet,  she’s  left  her  to  take  care  of  her  siblings.  she’s  unwillingly  become  the  third  parent.  and  while  her  parents  emphasized  that  she  should  be  focusing  on  school,  lyra  took  on  a  couple  jobs  here  and  there  to  help  with  the  bills.  shifts  at  the  local  convenience  store.  babysitting  for  her  neighbors.  safe  to  say  her  parents  were  less  than  pleased

002.  at  17,  lyra  heads  off  to  college.  her  parents  made  it  a  point.  she  received  pressure  to  become  a  doctor,  a  lawyer,  something  that  ensured  her  parents  that  she  is  their  retirement  plan.  or  at  the  very  least,  marry�� rich  so  that  she’d  be  set  for  life.  something  she  wholeheartedly  disagreed  with.  she  never  wanted  to  be  a  housewife.  she  has  ambitions  of  her  own.  ambitions  that  could  get  the  very  best  of  her  if  she  didn’t  watch  out.

 she  gains  acceptance  to  columbia  and  graduates  with  a  degree  in  finance.  her  initial  track  in  finance  changes  when  she  decides  to  go  to  law  school.  she  didn’t  want  to  go  back  to  san  francisco.  what  was  she  going  to  do  there?  it’s  nothing  against  her  family,  she  just  valued  the  nearly  3,000  mile  distance  between  herself  and  them.she  decides  to  pursue  a  career  in  law.  when  she  sets  her  mind  on  something,  there’s  no  stopping  her.  she  dives  straight  into  law  school  at  harvard  after  scoring  a  178  on  her  lsat.  just  two  points  shy  of  a  perfect  score.

 003.  lyra  thrives  in  law  school,  quickly  working  her  way  up  to  being  first  in  her  class.  her  future  looks  promising.  cutthroat.  ambitious.  made  to  prosper  in  big  law.  being  a  high  achieving  individual  means  she’s  bound  to  draw  some  form  of  attention.  

 and  she  does.  she  lands  herself  a  highly  coveted  summer  intern  position  at  an  established  firm  in  new  york  by  the  end  of  her  first  year.  by  her  second  and  final  year  of  law  school,  she’s  landed  offers  to  highly   coveted  summer  associate  positions.

 while  her  law  career  looks  promising,  she  neglected  to  focus  on  other  aspects  of  her  life.  much  to  her  displeasure,  she’s  set  up  on  a  blind  date  with  her  future  husband  by  mutual  friends.  she  doesn’t  know  it  yet.  but  it  doesn’t  turn  out  to  be  what  she  expected.  it  wasn’t  all  that  bad.  they  start  dating.  and  by  the  time  lyra  finishes  law  school,  they’re  engaged.

 004.  by  the  end  of  law  school,  lyra  receives  multiple  offers  and  accepts  a  position  in  new  york.  she  and  her  fiancee  make  the  permanent  move  to  new  york  to  start  their  new  life.  and  to  no  one’s  surprise,  she  makes  waves.  eventually,  she’s  promoted  to  junior  partner.  one  of  the  youngest  at  the  firm.

 a  couple  years  into  her  partnership,  lyra  and  her  husband  now  have  a  child  in  tow.  things  could  not  be  going  better  for  her.  she’s  close  to  making  senior  partner  at  the  firm.  it’s  well  within  her  sights  and  almost  GUARANTEED.  and  she  gets  the  bid  from  her  mentor.

 but  as  life  would  have  it,  the  firm  gets  into  some  hot  water  and  lyra  has  to  contemplate  her  options.  she’s  only  been  senior  partner  for  a  total  of  two  years  before  this  happens.  and  she  walks.  a  former  colleague  reached  out  to  offer  her  a  senior  partnership  at  their  law  firm  in  los  angeles.  so  she’s  off.  it’s  been  three  years.  her  and  her  family  make  the  move  and  settled  at  wisteria.
