nimble feet manage to avoid stepping on branches  that litter the floor of the forrest. a pale hand extended, as though meant to keep her companion at a distance but close enough for ella to ensure that she stays close behind her. she knows these parts well, and knows of the dangers that can lurking within them. her cottage shouldn’t be much further away, but the lingering presence of something less-than-friendly still creeps into the back of her mind.

suddenly, there’s a snap of a twig nearby. ella freezes, pressing her forearm into elsie just enough to stop her movement completely as well. from out of the corner of her eye, she watches as young brown bear begins to stalk near them. watching them, as though determining whether or not they are friend or foe.  ❝  well, hello there.  ❞  ella breathes quietly, tilting her head just slightly as the creature huffs loudly, as though it is wary of her intentions. instinctively, she raises her hands defensively.  ❝  it’s alright, we don’t mean you any harm. we’re just making our way back home.  ❞  after a brief moment, the connection seems to be made, the bear almost nodding its head in response as it turns its snout opposite them and begins to stalk back into the denser area of the forrest. 

releasing a sigh, ella turns to look at elsie with a grin beginning to curve at the corners of her lips.  ❝  he must still be quite young. most of the animals here know me by now.  ❞

     elsie doesn’t remain back because she’s scared.  maybe that sounds like terrified bravado, but it’s genuine - even when she is scared, she doesn’t react so sensibly. she figures that ella knows these woods better than her and it’s smart to take cues from her on navigating it. she’s at home in the wilderness, as much as on the road, but she’s been lost for a long time and she doesn’t love the thought of being lost again so soon. even though she stays a pace back, she still cranes her neck to get a better look at what’s made them stop. the sight of the bear widens her eyes just so. she doesn’t move a single muscle  ( she doesn’t think, anyways )  and she hopes she looks as nonthreatening as she actually is to this bear. he’s big, he’s no baby, but ella’s words suggest he’s still technically a juvenile. she’s starting to smile back now that the tension has ebbed, replaced with relief.

      ❝ that’s incredible. truly. ❞   she’s quick to fall in step with ella again, looking forward to actually reaching her cottage. she hasn’t had a moment to sit down all day; she hasn’t slept indoors for multiple days. though elsie doesn’t regret setting out on her travels, even considering the way it’s ended up, she does burn out sometimes. only two months ago she’d stopped for an entire week, helped out in a tavern she’s probably never going to set foot in again. how’s a restless young woman meant to get the rest she needs?   ❝ thank you, for letting me come back with you. ❞

“Okay. If you insist.” Speaking softly, she smiled at the female, allowing her to leave. Morgana was lucky that Gwen sometimes stayed with her. The two had bonded over such matters. Nightmares being one of them. There was something different about the ward of Uther. Though she could not place it. Sipping more of the tea, soon she would gather her night clothes. Sleeping alone was never fun for her. She had almost took on Arthur’s request for her to stay with him, but knowing Elise was waiting - she left. It was too soon for such acts, anyway. If Uther caught her in bed with his son, it might not bode well. Eyes lingered on the blonde as she bowed down to gather herself for home. It was strange she did not stay in the safety of the castle. 

     the castle does not mean safety for elsie. she doesn’t know how merlin stands it, sleeping in the same structure that the king sleeps in. uther pendragon would have his head removed from his shoulders without a moment’s consideration if he so much as lit a candle with his magic. considering her most intense magic is tied to her dreams, she prefers to spend her nights as far from uther as she can reasonably get. when she returns in the morning, she’s somehow more tired than when she’d left the night before. she’d slept, but it hadn’t been restful. she barely even offers merlin a smile in the hall as she carries a tray laden with food to kahlan’s chambers, though she does see him carrying an even fuller tray towards arthur’s. she shoulders open the door and sets the tray on the table before moving to throw open the curtains. sunlight pours in through the windows, illuminating kahlan’s bed.   ❝ good morning, my lady. ❞

‘ I AM certain they have more important things to do than ask for autographs. ’ she laughs as if she does not still enjoy the thrill of someone recognizing her, of hearing when someone has truly loved what she writes. in many ways it is beyond anything she could have imagined, after all she had grown up hearing romance was for lonely housewives and she had hidden her own favorites in the dust jackets of classics. ‘ it’s mostly just letting people know i will be unavailable for a few days. nothing major. ’

     ❝ oh, they definitely have more important things to do. that doesn’t mean they’ve got their priorities straight. ❞   sometimes it’s any excuse to stop digging. other times you’re hauling sleepy archaeologists out of a trench and sending them off to bed with no supper. she’s excited to introduce torvi to this side of history. frankly, she thinks you can tell a lot about a period of history by the kinds of people that love it enough to immerse themselves in it like this.   ❝ speak for yourself. i can’t think of a single person i’d need to tip off if i planned on being away for a weekend. ❞

IT WAS A PLEASANT CHANGE TO WITNESS SOMEONE GREET HIM WITH A SMILE AT THIS TIME OF DAY. The residents of the previous apartments he’d visited had practically scowled at him, evidently reacting with disdain at being bothered so early in the morning. Of course, it had been mostly followed by such comments as, aren’t you one of those guys on the TV? The ones that fought that big monster made entirely of marshmallow? He’d had to carefully navigate such questioning - sometimes accompanied by a comment or two about the fact that it couldn’t have been a ghost, it was bound to have been something different.

AT SUCH NAIVE OPINIONS, HE’D FOUGHT BACK A SIGH OF EXASPERATION. Perhaps it was a good thing that Peter was getting coffee. Still, this lady seemed nice enough.

❝ Good morning. Apologies for the early intrusion. My name is Dr. Egon Spengler, and I’m part of the Ghostbusters team - ❞

PAUSING, HE PROCEEDED TO SHOW HER THE TRADEMARK LOGO THAT HAD BEEN STITCHED ONTO THE SLEEVE OF HIS FLIGHT SUIT. With any luck, that would serve as proof of his words.

❝ - We have reason to believe that this apartment complex is currently serving as a source location for paranormal activity, and we’re making enquiries with the residents as part of our investigation. Would you happen to have seen or heard anything abnormal within the last couple of weeks? Any unusual activity, any unexplained feelings of dread or panic? ❞

     oh, the ghostbusters!  elsie’s heard of them; she’s seen them on television, as have plenty of other people. the uniform makes sense now and the logo is identifiable but she feels a little bad she didn’t recognize his face. she’s got a head full of stuff, she’s never met him before... she’ll remember it now, for sure  ( even though she’s got no real reason to ). he’s a doctor, that’s interesting. she wonders what his degree’s in. do they teach classes on ghost busting? can’t do. must be something else. stop thinking, start focusing. teeth absentmindedly catch her bottom lip as she focuses on what he’s actually saying. her eyebrows raise when she realizes - they’ve come about the haunting. it feels rude to interrupt him so she restrains herself from just blurting it out, waiting as patiently as she can stand for him to finish asking his reasoned questions.

     ❝ oh, it’s super haunted. been haunted. honestly, i don’t know how you made it all the way up to this floor without making a diagnosis. ❞   her arms fold over her chest and she leans her shoulder against the open doorway.

     ❝ i’ve been seeing and hearing things since i first moved in, three years ago. footsteps, banging, tapping, knocking... things moving out of the corner of the eye. handprint on a foggy mirror, once. spent fifteen minutes terrified there was a serial killer in the apartment with me. ❞   that had been the worst thing that the haunting had ever done to her. she’s not really that scared of it. but a member of the ghostbusters turning up at her door might mean she needs to rethink that stance. maybe she should be a little more concerned.   ❝ would you like to come in and have a look? ❞

His orbs sparkled when he thought of the blonde prince. He couldn’t help the look of complete endearment. Merlin had not counted on falling head first for the prat, but it made his mediocre life so much better. At least when his chores were done, he could track Arthur down to spend some alone time with him. This brought a smile to the most worn down warlock. Destiny could be crushing but his need to protect the other didn’t come strictly out of duty anymore. Love. It was all fueled by love and theirs would help shape Albion. 

“Sounds risky.” He frowned, thinking about George snooping in his chambers to clean. If he found anything, he would go running to Uther for sure, and then it might be his head on the chopping block. “Better not do the charm. Last thing I need is the king thinking I enchanted him. So the tincture might work. Though I found a spell that helps him ease into sleep. I only use it when I know no one will come into his chambers.” A few times, he had to jump from the bed and hide under it. Counting those moments, he had not been properly dressed. 

     gods, merlin’s really properly head over heels. elsie doesn’t even bother fighting her own smile. it’s good; it’s a feeling her friend very much deserves. her own romance is not so world-changing but it means everything to her. she’s going to find lancelot tonight, she decides, and she’s going to spend some time with him. she wants to shake off the feeling of loneliness that sometimes creeps in, that’s creeping in now as she thinks about her situation... reminded starkly that she’s got none of the people she’d grown up with. she’s made new friends and they are very important to her, but she has never completely finished mourning her past life. especially not now that she might be confronting it all over again.

     ❝ i’ll give you the tincture then. ❞   she moves towards the single shelf fixed to the walls of the room, and she takes down a bottle. the glass is blue and the stopper is clearly worn, but it does the job well enough. she offers it to him.   ❝ no more than five drops in anything that isn’t fermented. no wine before bed for his highness tonight, i’m afraid. ❞

although   the   forest   often   provides   what   adriata   needs   to   survive   ,   she   sometimes   ventures   into   the   town   to   get   fabric   to   make   new   dresses   for   herself   .   despite   most   people   in   town   already   knowing   who   she   is   ,   she   makes   sure   her   pointed   ears   are   hidden   behind   her   golden   hair   .   she   doesn’t   know   why   she   bothers   ;   she   looks   more   fae   than   human   anyway   .

once   she’s   bought   her   supplies   ,   she   means   to   go   straight   home   .   that   is   until   someone   elbows   her   out   of   the   way   as   she   passes   him   .   he   sneers   at   her   as   her   fabrics   scatter   &   blow   down   the   path   in   the   wind   ,   buttons   rolling   in   all   directions   .   she   clenches   her   teeth   to   stop   the   insults   bubbling   at   the   tip   of   her   tongue   ,   instead   choosing   to   attempt   to   gather    her   materials   before   they’re   gone   for   good   .

     ❝ WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU? ❞   elsie’s floored by the display she witnesses almost as soon as she enters the town. she has been many places and seen many cruelties inflicted but it never gets any easier to stomach. instead of chasing the aggressor down, however, she stops to assist adriata in gathering her materials. the buttons are the hardest to track down, small as they are, but she’s determined and she has a keen eye. she remembers a pouch in her bag and empties it into her bag, filling it again with adriata’s buttons and pulling the drawstring shut tight.   ❝ there, that ought to keep those together... i can help you carry the rest, if you like. ❞

     she’s tired, and it shows when she smiles - or at least it would for anyone who’s seen her smile before. it’s nowhere near as bright as it should be but it’s not because she isn’t happy. she’s just been walking for so long and she really needs a good night’s sleep. or just a chair, maybe.

“It has many uses, actually, but it’s just something you can meditate on and when you use the magics, it draws in the excess and slowly releases it back into the world once it fizzles out. It is quite heavy though. Just a second.” Ritual to bless candle was sped up and the item was placed on the cloth before Shannon darted around the counter to bring Elsie the anchor. It was a giant metal ball in a diamond shaped cage with heavy chains at either end. It was placed on the counter for the other to observe with a heavy sounding thud.

     ❝ no exaggerations on that... sounds pretty heavy duty. ❞   it also looks pretty serious, something out of a bizarre fantasy novel. that’s most of her life these days though.   ❝ do you really think it’d help? ❞   cost can be managed, more than likely, but elsie doesn’t like investing in things she doesn’t actually have the skill to use. this seems like a pretty advanced kind of magic.

     despite saying all of that, she’d much rather if elsie stayed out of the way. if it was up to her, she’d have stayed in the car without protest…but things were never that simple, and if she insisted that she stayed out of the way, it would probably only lead to the reverse. it was easier this way. “okay, come on. we need to be really careful — you especially.”

     ❝ right behind you, i promise. ❞   elsie falls in step behind sarah, ready and willing to do whatever she was instructed to. she’s always been a little restless and a lot reckless; this is really just par for the course. if chuck can do all these incredibly dangerous things, surely she can too. she doesn’t have the intersect in her head or anything like that but she is smart, and she’s quick.

thank goodness for her theatre lessons, then. udyati takes a breath. in through the nose, out through the mouth. one of elsie’s rings glow briefly. one step, two steps, three steps forward and there she goes, striding forward proudly and with purpose. “okay.”

     elsie keeps her chin up and her eyes straight ahead, even as they pass people by. no one spares them a second glance and she becomes more comfortable in her movements by the second. just underneath the surface, however, she’s stressed; her heart is pounding in her chest and she can hear her own pulse thrumming in her head. the sound is cut through by a different one suddenly. it’s like hundreds of voices whispering, overlapping, in hundreds of different languages. it’s ahead of them still so she doesn’t pause or slow but she glances at udyati to see if she can hear it too. she might have a touch of magic and this is one way to find out.

        He pulls a chair close to her, though for the moment his full attention was held by her and not yet the writings. A hand tucks back a stray lock of her hair from her face. “About me? I am honored.” He means it too. He has had songs written about him over the years, all varying in levels of accuracy and success. Though none who had written them had her talent. “So how is it I can help?”

     ❝ first of all you can stop distracting me. ❞   as if roman is unaware what his touch does to her. it consumes her full attention and makes it almost impossible to finish anything she’s working on. this tactic, he employs often, and she’s certain he does so on purpose.   ❝ and then you can help me with rhyme schemes. you have an ear for it, i think. ❞
