"that's  why  you  have  me."    i  spot  two  guards  talking  out  of  the corner  of  my  eye.    "i  can  be  patient  enough  for  the  two  of  us." i  can't  make  out  what  they're  talking  about,    not  without drawing  some  serious  heat  to  us.    ...    until  one  of  them gestures  passionately  in  our  direction.    my  steady  hand squeezes his  once  more.    hold  your  horses,    cowboy.   the  rules of engagement  were  clear;    no  firing  unless  fired  upon. getting into a public fire fight on us soil would be an international incident. i  fake  a  makeup  check in  the  side-view  mirror.    the guards  are getting  closer. my  opposite  hand  hovers  over  my outer  thigh.    i trust  my  instincts, but  i'm  not  naive. i  know these  scenarios can  turn  on  a  dime.

he was better at fighting than he was at acting. so much could go wrong and make things much worse. mariana made it easy for him though, comfortable in a sense. his fingers drum against the steering wheel, moving at a snail's pace to the border. kayce was always tense when on mission, head always on a swivel, going through all the scenarios ... which was what he was doing right now. it wasn't until mari's hand squeezes his that he comes back to reality, not just a body going through the undercover motions. "never been a patient man. you know that better than most."
