Week 1- What Are Your Habits?
This was my first experience with exploring how movement can be created using different methods and approaches. Being the first week, I was obviously nervous but willing to let go of all apprehensions and dive straight into the process.
First Task- Create movement based on your habits- "what movement or style do you always use or rely on?"
First thoughts... this could be interesting, it allowed me to stop and question the movement I've been producing and if it is quite repetitive I can act on it to change. Second thoughts... I don't think I have any habits.!! whenever I start improvising or creating movement there's never a structured process and formulae that I always use, so contrary to my first thoughts initially I was quite stuck. Saying this, I just decided to do anything, start moving and something will grow as I believe it's hard to see your habits as it's something personal and unique to you.
Second Task- Create movement totally opposite to your habits- "what movement would you never think of doing?"
This is when the real mind block kicked in. How can I do something I'll never think of doing? As soon as I think of a movement I see it as being mine. Doing something that's not habitual, so wouldn't normally do, I found impossible, I felt like I had to be someone else other than myself which felt wrong and uncomfortable to do (I had a moment where I was questioning life if you hadn't noticed).
Your movement being habitual doesn't have to mean that its always the same. Look at it positively your habits define who you are, use you habits to broaden your movement bank.
I prefer to be myself, if it's not habitual it's not you, movement is personal.
