Street Party Frederiksberg!

Today is the 2. day of Game's 2day street festival in Frederiksberg. Yesterday we were in a housing area called Stjernen and we had performances from danish artists such as Icekiid and Fouli. Today we are in Lindevangsparken where we will have tournaments in basketball and football, parkour and slack line workshops and dance battles. Furthermore, the biggest name of the two days will perform tonight, a danish rapper called Gilli. His show starts at 19.00, drop by :) I will upload videos and pictures throughout the day, so you can get a view in what's going on :) MuchLoveAsger

That’s all folks!

My work here is done. Friday last week was my last official internship day. There were a few loose ends, we finished over the weekend, before we met up monday to have a little farewell-lunch together. We also shot the team photo and individual headshots of all team members, to put in the book. Yes, my face and name will actualy B in D Book what up

There is still work to be done on the book before it is ready to be published, but the rest is up to the publisher. Here is what we expect the front page to look like (nothing is certain at this point):

If things work out as planned, the book should be published sometime in May, in both Danish and English and in physical as well as E-book versions! - Can’t wait!

Now for some serious stuff! I would like to evaluate just a little on the whole process. I am going to do it through a list tips for other students roaming the maze of internshipping. Here goes:

Start your search early! - I know I already said this in an earlier post, but it cannot be stressed enough. For your own sake, have a few options ready come the last weeks before you have to have found your spot, and go into depth with finding out what the different spots have to offer.

Be active! - If you feel like you internship is not giving you what it is supposed to, do not be affraid to pick up the paste yourself. No one says your internship host has to be the one pushing your learning - you are very much capable  to do so yourself, to a certain extend o course. I sometimes found myself in situations where I did not feel I was being pushed to perform, and I know wish I would have been better at taking more initiative myself. Especially in the early stages.

Make blogging a weekly ritual! - Why not sit down every sunday night and throw up a few pictures and some text. Well because life sometimes gets in the way. But my advice is not lose your blog-motivation because you forget to post one week. It is actually quite fun, once you sit down and do it; and it is really nice for your friends, classmates and so on, to keep track of what you are doing.

Be careful when agreeing to intern on a specific and time-bound project, compared to aiding a firm or organisation in their daily work! - I found out that it can be very difficult to say beforehand what a project has to offer, learning wise, thus I ended up not living up to all of my 4 learning objectives. Of course I also learned things thay I did not expect; for example organization and alternative solutions was something I ended up gaining a lot of skills in; but it is no doubt easier to steer your learning towards the already set goals, than to pick up things ongoingly.

There we go. Those are them that are my advice for you!

So...Phone died, and with it, the “flow” of content - One of these pesky #firstworldproblems that just makes the European Lifestyle that much more difficult.

BREAKING NEWS! Live-blogging of a day at the office/kitchen - It’s time to bake!

Hello my dearest followers and disciples! Today, all day (until 3-4 anyway), yours truly will be liveblogging the work that is happening in the kitchen. I will be putting up pictures and short videos of what we are doing, to give you guys an idea of what is going down in the kitchen, and to finally meet the team. I know many of you have been asking for that for a long time now… The time is now my underlings

Today we will be baking healthy treats and making spreads, details to follow.

Learning Objectives #WhereAreWeAt

Hi! I would like to show you the learning objectives I formulated before commencing. I would also like to tell you where I am in the process of achieving these objectives.

These are my four learning objectives, my initial key strategies to obtain them as well as where I feel like I am in the process of achieving them at this point:

Learning Objective I:            To gain insight in how a cookbook is created.

Key strategies (tasks): Take part in developing of recipes, formulating the text, set up of the cookbook, publishing of the book, etc.

Learning Objective II:           Improve cooking skills and gain knowledge on how           to behave in a kitchen, concerning hygiene, cross-               contamination, etc.

Key strategies (tasks): Testing out the recipes by cooking them. Learning from the other members of the team as well as from internship supervisor.

Learning Objective III:            Improve skills in video making and publishing.

Key strategies (tasks): Create cooking-videos for some of the dishes and decide the best way to publish/present them (links in the book, QR-codes, etc.)

Learning Objective IV:            To be able to make nutritional assessments of                         recipes and meals.

Key strategies (tasks): Using online databases to assess the nutritional content of the recipes in the cookbook. Deciding on which, and how much, of the nutritional information to put in the cookbook.

 As I expected, even before starting on this internship, it is very difficult to predict how a process like this is going to pan out. Especially the fact that none of us in the team, my supervisor included, ever had tried working on creating a cookbook before, made the process even more unpredictable.

However, the learning objectives we formulated have actually fitted quite well with the process. Especially developing recipes and cooking has been a huge part of the process up until now.

Video making has filled out a smaller part than expected; mainly due to the very time-consuming process, it is to create a video. We simply have not had enough kitchen hours to be able to invest the time it would take to make as many videos as we initially wanted to produce (10-15). Thus, we have at this point only managed to produce three videos.

The nutritional assessment of recipes has been a smaller part than expected, because the publisher did not want complete nutritional assessment of all dishes, but rather the content of specific relevant nutrients in given recipes (i.e. content of iron, calcium, vitamin D, etc.).  

Over all I have achieved parts of all of my learning objectives, but given the fact that we are working as a team, some of my experience has come vicariously and through observation of the other team members.

As of right now, my main learning experience has been that a process like this is very hard to plan, and adjustments have to be made almost on a daily basis, to be able to live up to the expectations of all the involved parties.

Tomorrow I will guide you through “a day at the office/kitchen”, which hopefully will give you more insight in the work we are doing…

It’s been a while

Me, myself and the rest of the team have been hit by the flu the last few weeks. It’s been a challenge

I was unable to attend kitchen duties all of last week for Flu-Reasons... Therefore most of my work last week was research based homework, whenever I felt good enough to do a bit

As if my takedown wasn’t enough, most of the other members contracted the same bug and were also incapacitated at different times within last week and this week. 

Little by little people are starting to refind their strenght, and we are begining to work at a faster paste again. #it’sgoodtobeback

It has been interesting to see what this hick up has done to the team chemistry. It is obvious to feel that the symbiosis we had started to build up as a team has taken a serious hit - Some members might feel like they have been carrying bigger loads than others; while other members feel sidelined, because we haven’t been good enough to share whatever progress has been made, with each other. 

It’s been a rough patch, no doubt, but hopefully we will be getting back to the right path, now that everyone is back to something close to 100%.

Status right now is that we have cooked and photographed 20 of the aproximately 35 recipes, we at the very least want to put in the book. Plan is to be done with all recipes by the end of next week, and then move on to whatever parts come next!

The path to the Cookbook

I never got to tell you how I secured my internship spot. We can’t have that now can we..? Here is how it panned out

I probably came at this internship search a little differently than many of my classmates. Mainly by starting my search very late (not recommendable!).  I had a few ideas early on about places to contact, but for unknown reasons I waited a very long time before taking the initial contact... I think, partly because I was affraid they would say no, thus leaving me with no real alternatives. - They of course did exactly that... Said no

The weeks before the christmas break and most of January was very stressful. Not only did we have a lot of work on our exam project as well as preparation for the oral exam; this internship situation was also floating around in my head on a daily basis, making me anxious about not being able to find a place before the deadline in February.

I contacted a lot of organisations in the last two weeks of February. I searched far and wide, and tried to use my network to the best of my abillities.  In the end, the increased searching panned out, and around the 1. of February, I suddenly found myself in a situation of being able to choose between 3 different internships; one of which was at an urban farm in Manhattan. This was a possibility I had a very hard time turning down, but convenience and time pressure (I would have had less than a week to get everything in order) played parts in me choosing, as I did. 

I am looking very much forward to the experiences I will have throughout this internship, and I am very excited to have our first meeting with the full team tomorrow morning!

Lastly I would like to give some advice on what I think students searching for internships in the future should focus on!

1: Start in good time, for your own sake. - You are going to hear this from all angles in the search process; and there is not much else to say than; they are all right! 

2: Spread your search to more places: - I felt weird about doing this at first. It almost felt like I was cheating on one place if I was in contact with another at the same time. But that is just how things work, if you want to make sure you find a place.
