"Ma Vie en Rose" lyrics translation

Here is the translation of Marie Antoinette’s song from the 2025 anime movie. The scenes that accompany this song reminded me so much of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette! Has anyone else picked up on that vibe?

Please note that English is not my first language and I speak only intermediate Japanese. So this translation could be much improved—and I might make changes later. Some of my word choices may be more liberal than your average literal translation.

"The Rose of Versailles" lyrics translation

I don’t know about you but I was bawling the whole time during the opening sequence of the 2025 anime movie. At that point, I didn’t care that the movie would probably disappoint—I was just so happy to have new RoV material in my favourite medium!

Later I sat down to translate the lyrics of the title song into English because I felt like I had to create something new for the fandom. And I’m a translator in real life. So here we go.

Notes:

I can’t always tell who is singing which line, so I only indicated the obvious ones. I wish I had the booklet for the album which surely has this information. If anyone reading this has it, I would really appreciate it if you could share scans with me. 

I think this song was made to make you cry—especially if you feel nostalgic about your encounter with RoV in whatever form it may be. The lyrics include all the right keywords like dignity, passion, destiny, etc. associated with RoV through and through. But it’s so cheerful—like, too cheerful for RoV. Come on, I mean, there is a chorus with all four main characters singing!

I thought it was interesting to see this song set a completely different tone than the other songs associated with RoV. The anime series opening song, Bara wa Utsukushiku Chiru, is an obvious example. It’s upbeat but sombre, hinting at the impending tragedies in the story. The theme song from Takarazuka stage adaptations, Bara Berusaiyu, is also upbeat and, while it’s not sombre, it’s not a happy song either. It’s epic and overly dramatic, like everything about Takarazuka is. 

This song, The Rose of Versailles, makes you feel giddy! I think the composer and lyricist were going for capturing the feelings of the fans towards RoV, rather than the tone of the story overall. RoV is very tragic but the emotion it stirs up in your heart is a very happy one and perhaps that’s what they wanted to tap into. It worked in my case. I was going "It’s them! OMG, it’s THEM!" the whole time.

Oscar’s sense of responsibility

I just realized something… Oscar asked Marie Antoinette’s permission to resign from the Royal Guard because, after all those conversations with Bernard, she felt that she could not be a part of an institution that served the nobility to the detriment of the third estate. When the queen insisted for a reason, Oscar said it was because she failed to capture the Black Knight. I just realized that this was not her excuse, but her justification for leaving the Royal Guard.

At the time, Bernard was still healing in captivity at the Jarjayes mansion. So Oscar fully intended to release him even back then, but she also fully expected to face the consequences even if no one would ever find out about it to hold her responsible. And asking to be demoted was her way of paying the price of what she had set her mind to do—after all, she did catch the Black Knight and would be releasing him intentionally. 

This is such an “Oscar” thing to do… So noble, so honourable… 

The concept of having a sense of responsibility as a virtue is one of the most powerful messages of The Rose of Versailles that I hadn’t given much thought to until recently. 

Oscar is aware of her privilege as a noble and takes responsibility for André after the dauphine’s horseback riding accident. As his master, Oscar feels responsible for him in what was clearly an accident and puts her life on the line. 

As the heir of the Jarjayes family, she feels responsible for the plight of the commoners living in her lands in Arras and makes it her duty to inform the royal family of their situation. 

As the captain of the Gardes Françaises, she feels responsible for the well-being of her soldiers, berating herself for not realizing that they were struggling to feed their families, and ultimately wins their hearts. 

The list goes on…

Even in her darkest hour after losing André, she leads the remainder of her troops to storm the Bastille because she feels responsible to do her part in the revolution as a citoyenne who believes in the cause.

Yes, it feels wonderful to be swept away in the romance, but such lessons to be derived from the story truly make The Rose of Versailles remarkable in a way that I have come to appreciate more lately.

Liberté, égalité, fraternité… And now we shall become heroes without names!

Oscar falls deeply in love with André and refuses any other man asking for her hand in marriage. However, history will soon sweep away the two of them in its wake… What starts as a protest against new taxes evolves into the reopening of the États généraux, which includes commoners among its members. When the representatives of commoners declare themselves the National Assembly and oppose the king, he and his entourage resort to deploying military forces to retake control of the situation. Thus, Oscar’s squad receives orders to be on the march. The night before that fateful day, Oscar accepts Andre into her heart and body… On July 13, 1789, upon finding out that the army opened fire on civilians, Oscar declares herself an ally of the citizens and engages in battle with the king’s troops. However, Andre dies amidst the fierce combat. Losing Andre, whose feelings Oscar finally returned, leaves her devastated. Nevertheless, Oscar refuses to give in to sorrow and leads her soldiers to storm the Bastille…
