Intersections: Short Stories From Rideshare Passengers by Andrew Spink
Tumblr media
Book Summary:
Nobody lies to their Uber driver. The anonymity functions like a truth serum, putting everyone’s raw and unfiltered selves on full display. But it is in those rideshare confessionals - when human lives are intersecting without the usual pretense, that you discover the heights of human potential. And you hear some powerful stories. A woman stopping a suicide on the other side of the world. A heart attack healing a fractured family. A husband celebrating with his wife, on his last night alive.
Intersections is a collection of nine short stories, all based on the true events and experiences of rideshare passengers. As you follow the characters through life-and-death journeys, they give you hope in humanity's potential and inspire you to remain present to the infinite possibilities for wonder all around us.

Review:
Numerous individuals have utilized rideshare services and hold varying perspectives regarding their brief interactions with drivers and fellow passengers. Andrew Spink recounts his experiences engaging with passengers during his tenure of over three years as a rideshare driver. He has encountered individuals from diverse nations, speaking various languages, with a wide array of life experiences. These encounters have prompted him to explore the profound depths of human emotional capacity.
The book has three distinct sections: Water, Earth, and Fire, each containing three poignant and introspective narratives derived from genuine encounters with rideshare passengers. While the foundational elements of these narratives are rooted in reality, the author embellishes them with contextual depth, drawing from personal perspective and imagination. The author aptly describes these stories as true fiction. These narratives elicit profound emotions of astonishment, sorrow, and pure joy.
The writing is undeniably amazing, skillfully weaving magic with words and the sequence of events in each story. The stories are brimming with intense emotional moments and just the right amount of humor and suspense. As a reader, I was fervently rooting for the characters and yearning for a specific outcome, only to be blindsided by a twist, as exemplified in "Secrets" and "The Skeptic." I assume the author has mastered this expertise of connecting with his audiences through his experiences as a solo show performer and public speaker and has applied the same to his books.
I have absolutely no negative remarks about any aspect of this book. I particularly adored the short-story format and the captivating, warm writing style. The cover and the title are perfect as well. The editors have done an exemplary job, as I found only a couple of minor errors. Therefore, I rate this book a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars. I also see the potential for web series based on these stories and more.
This book is a must-read for lovers of short stories and anyone who enjoys delving into human connections and emotions. The thought-provoking nature of the stories will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact, encouraging you to reflect on life and recognize the overlooked but valuable moments that bring magic to our existence. However, due to the presence of profanity, this book is best suited for mature readers.
Seetha E., Review of Intersections

Tangles: A Cold War Love Story and Mystery by by Kay Smith-Blum
Tumblr media
Summary:
“In a well-crafted debut, Smith-Blum provides the reader a ringside seat to the birth of the nuclear age…a beautifully written, important story…Tangles packs a punch and hits close to home.” –Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author of The Tracy Crosswhite Series
Oppenheimer was just the beginning.
When a harpooned whale offers proof the Hanford Nuclear Reservation is endangering all life in the Columbia River Basin, Luke Hinson, a brash young scientist, seizes the chance to avenge his father’s death but a thyroid cancer diagnosis derails Luke’s research. Between treatments, he dives back in, making enemies at every turn. On an overnight trek, Luke discovers evidence that Mary, his former neighbor, embarked on the same treacherous trail, and her disappearance, a decade prior, may be tied to Hanford’s harmful practices mired in government-mandated secrecy.
A love story wrapped in a mystery, this stunning Cold War home-front tale reveals the devastating costs of the birth of the nuclear age, and celebrates the quiet courage of wronged women, the fierce determination of fatherless sons, and the limitless power of the individual.
Tangles is a genre-defying must-read for our time.

Reviews:
"Based on real events, Tangles is an ambitious debut novel that is at once labyrinthine and simply and deeply human. At its heart are generations of secrets and horrific sacrifices played out in the twisted shadows of personal, corporate and government corruption during the advent of the Atomic Age and Cold War. In stunning and engrossing multiple narratives, Smith-Blum reminds us about the devastating and lasting costs of love, loyalty and freedom and, above all, the enduring solace of nature and family." —James Anderson, author of The Never-Open Desert Diner and Lullaby Road
"In a well-crafted debut, Kay Smith-Blum provides the reader a ringside seat to the birth of the nuclear age and its human costs on those living in a small town cloaked in Cold War, government-mandated secrecy. Tangles is a tale of tragedy and loss, but also hope. A beautifully written, important story much like A Civil Action. It packs a punch and hits close to home." —Robert Dugoni, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Tracy Crosswhite Series
"In her knockout debut novel, Tangles, Kay Smith-Blum sheds new light on Hanford. Skillfully blending historical details and nail-biting suspense, Smith-Blum weaves a harrowing story that unfolds across two decades with two complex protagonists you can really root for as they fight against a powerful, government-backed system. Timely as ever, TANGLES is fast-paced, compelling, and unputdownable." —Kevin O'Brien, New York Times Bestselling Author of The Enemy at Home"
"A brilliant, captivating ride...although fiction, Smith-Blum reveals many truths about our radioactive legacy." —Joshua Frank, Award-winning investigative journalist and author of Atomic Days
"Smith-Blum has gorgeously re-created an obscure time and place that were critical to the future of the planet. Her story speaks to us all." —Steve Olson, Award-winning author of The Apocalypse Factory
"Tangles is a fascinating read...set against the backdrop of an important time and little-known place in American history, it keeps the reader guessing. I couldn't put it down." —Michele Gerber, Ph.D., Author of On The Home Front: The Cold War Legacy of the Hanford Nuclear Site
"Tangles is a genre-defying novel that is impossible to set aside. Kay Smith-Blum deftly wields a Cold War dual timeline to deliver readers a doubleheader of a story—the first, a tale of love and loss; the second, a government willing to pull out all stops to hide its responsibility for nuclear contamination. Smith-Blum describes Eastern Washington with talent matching David Guterson, and reveals character in dialogue reminiscent of Annie Proulx. One of the best debut novels I've read!" —Cam Torrens, award-winning author of Stable, False Summit, and Scorched
"Tangles is as gut-wrenching as it is heartwarming. The cast of characters as memorable as the setting. The backdrop is the mass production of nuclear warheads, and the fallout and life-altering consequences are nothing less than tragic, frustrating, and mind-blowing. Kay Smith-Blum is a master storyteller, and she is now on my "go to" list of authors to read, and she should be for you, too! Tangles is a 5 Star, Must Read!" —Joseph Lewis, Author of Blaze In, Blaze Out, Fan Mail, and other tales of the Evans Family
"The world of Tangles is brought to life with Smith-Blum's vivid, rich language that befits such an epic historical tale." —Samantha Dunn, Author of Not by Accident: Reconstructing, a Careless Life, and Failing Paris
"Tangles...is a triumphant artistic reconstruction. Kay Smith-Blum's prose is gentle but it's stands against the deadly gales. This book is hardly just another self-satisfied screed by a know-it-all environmentalist. The love stories that abound--reverberate for generations, just like the diseases foisted on them. Tangles is an ode to the human condition, to the irrepressibility of caring in the face of uncaring dangers. It is also first-rate literature." —Morris Hoffman, author of Pinch Hitting

Champagne Widows by Rebecca Rosenberg
Tumblr media
Summary:
Sparkling Courage: Love, Loss, and the First Champagne Queen's Daring Legacy
France, 1800s. Young widow Barbe-Nicole Clicquot possesses an extraordinary gift: Le Nez, an exquisite sense of smell required to craft the world's finest champagne. Despite crippling grief and societal rules against women owning businesses, she inherits her late husband's struggling winery.
Napoleon's Code shackles her with business restrictions, his wars strangle the economy, and competitors block her every step. Yet, Barbe-Nicole rises like a defiant bubble, confronting prejudice and clashing with the Emperor himself. Then, amidst the chaos, love throws a tempting yet perilous curveball: a passionate connection with her sales manager. But marrying him means forfeiting the winery, forcing her to choose between love and her life's calling.
Will Barbe-Nicole defy the odds and become the first female champagne mogul, or will her dream be crushed?
The captivating story of Veuve Clicquot is that of a woman who dared to rise above treacherous times, personal loss, and an empire's defiance, leaving an indelible mark on the world of champagne.

Review:
Champagne Widows tells the story of the famous winemaker Veuve Clicquot, born Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin. Barbe-Nicole inherits her grandmother’s extraordinary sense of smell, Le Nez (The Nose), and she decides to use her talent to make the best champagne in the world. Rejecting all her suitors, Barbe-Nicole marries her childhood sweetheart, François Clicquot, and they start a wine business together. François, suffering from mental illness after his experiences in the Napoleonic Wars, dies tragically, but Barbe-Nicole keeps the winery going, even though Napoleon’s laws forbid women from owning a business. Poor harvests and a world at war will not stop her. She and her chief salesman decide to sell the wine in Russia, in spite of Napoleon’s blockade, because the Russians love champagne. When she falls in love with her salesman, Barbe-Nicole must make a difficult choice, because if she remarries, she loses the winery.
I loved the character of Barbe-Nicole, a strong, determined woman, who defies Napoleon to make her business a success. The novel contains fascinating details about winemaking and everything that goes into it: the soil, climate, barrels, glass bottles, and the various blends of grapes. All these things and more affect the smell and flavor of the wine. I felt I could smell the wine along with Barbe-Nicole, because Rosenberg’s descriptions are so vivid. Barbe-Nicole’s narrative is interspersed with brief chapters about the rise and fall of Napoleon, and the evil advisor known as the Red Man, a devil figure disguised as a coachman, who encourages him to conquer Europe. Rosenberg takes the reader into the world of the Napoleonic Wars, with all the devastation they caused, and some of the most moving parts of the book are the scenes where Barbe-Nicole harvests the grapes along with other women who were widowed by Napoleon’s wars.

"The Bones of the Apostle is a historical mystery with a unique object: the relics of St. Thomas the Apostle, who brought Christianity to Mesopotamia and India. Along the way, as our detectives Flinders Petrie and Thomas Pettigrew search for the stolen bones in Iraq, they find themselves confronted by the horror of the Assyrian genocide during World War I. With that as a backdrop, the search for the sacred remains of the founder of the Church of the East takes on even more importance. A fascinating trek shining a light on a neglected historic period and event."

Universe of Lost Messages (The Charismites) by Janet Stilson
Tumblr media
Story Summary
What if your child has special powers and can get people to do almost anything? What happens if the child is abducted?
Izzie and Tristan were never mere humans. They are Charismites, with almost god-like powers of magnetism. And they couldn’t be more different. Izzie is a reckless, playful megastar whose popularity far exceeds that of any other celebrity. Tristan is a nature-loving recluse, almost completely unknown to anyone beyond a protective biodome.
Their worlds explode when they are abducted by The Fist, a power-hungry political group with a master plan to control the hearts and minds of all people on Earth and satellite colonies beyond. But the plan only works with the help of Charismites.
Their families don’t have much to go on until a feisty, street-wise teen, Cheeta, discovers clues about the Charismites within a strange metaverse filled with millions of missing messages. But will they actually find them? And can they destroy The Fist before they take over the planet?
Filled with an eclectic cast of characters, a slow-burn romance, humor, and wonderful descriptions of a sensual and sometimes violent world, Universe of Lost Messages is a stand-alone sequel to Janet Stilson’s beloved novel, The Juice. Fans of William Gibson, Philip K. Dick, Raymond Chandler, dystopian novels and science fiction thriller books will devour this adventure. While part of a series, Universe of Lost Messages can be read as a standalone book.
“Stilson shows herself to be one of the very best of new SF writers. This is a terrific thriller but it’s also a deeply incisive political novel, holding up a mirror to our celebrity-obsessed culture.” – Jonathan Oliver, former editor-in-chief, Solaris Books and author of The Language of Beasts.

Review:
A small group scours a distant-future United States when someone abducts their loved ones in this standalone SF sequel.
A sudden explosion in a Los Angeles home leaves behind a charred room and no sign of famed teen actress Izzie Cardinale. But her older brother, Shake, a lead content producer at media conglomerate Nuhope, knows she’s been kidnapped. Izzie is a Charismite whose “extraordinary powers of charisma” some may want to use for sinister purposes. Her Charismite abilities are innate, much like those of family friend Tristan Ellington, who, despite his parents keeping him safe in a climate-controlled biodome, also vanishes. And in Queens, Cheeta LaVera, assistant to Sen. Miles Morelli, is looking for the senator, her boss/surrogate father, who reportedly died in a “freak car accident.” Apparently, an organization called The Fist has kidnapped him, at least according to his message that Cheeta discovers in a bizarre, virtual reality–like “metaverse” where people’s random, lost messages float in bubbles. The metaverse is the key to finding the missing people. Stilson eases readers into this follow-up to The Juice (2021). The story unfolds in a well-described “United America” (comprising the bulk of the American continents) and boasts an indelible cast. The pace is leisurely, and the cast gradually learns about the message-filled metaverse, as well as The Fist’s plan for the young Charismites. Alternating first-person voices narrate the story, including those of Cheeta, Tristan, Lush Ellington, and more. Distinctive social classes help shape these characters’ circumstances and backgrounds (Cheeta was born into the lower-classed Chav, while the Ellingtons are the “super wealthy” Elite). Similarly, believable technology (e.g., security bots and decidedly more vicious spider bots) makes this an engaging, plausible future world.
A deliberately paced, engrossing tale set in a politically motivated, tech-heavy universe. - Kirkus Reviews
About the Author
Janet Stilson writes scripts, novels and short stories that largely fall in the grounded sci-fi and fantasy genres and illuminate the human condition in provocative ways.
Janet’s novels, “The Juice” and “Universe of Lost Messages,” are suspenseful, cyberpunk tales that were inspired by her work as an editor and reporter, interviewing execs at big media companies about where the heck we’re all going.
“Juice” was published by Dragon Moon Press on Feb. 9, 2021. “Universe,” which is connected to the same world, was released May 14, 2024. It is the winner of the 2024 NYC Big Book Award in the Sci-Fi category.

The Case of the Stolen Goddess by John Amos
Tumblr media
Story Summary:
Flinders smiled. “Once more into the breach, my friend.”
Now famous after their previous quest to find Cleopatra’s tomb, detectives Flinders Petrie and Thomas Pettigrew begin their next adventure in search of a stolen statue of Aphrodite. Their pursuit takes them from the bowels of the British Museum to the barren desert of Syria and the glamorous bustle of Istanbul. At every step, they are confronted by two incredibly evil opponents: the Bulbul Pasha, a giant of a man who sings like a nightingale while he kills, and the Veiled One, a horribly disfigured monster who lives only for revenge. On the way, they meet T. E. Lawrence and Gertrude Bell, who are excavating a site in Syria. Lawrence leads them to a crusader castle and into a surreal battle with the Bulbul, but the statue still eludes them. With Gertrude’s help, the detectives enlist the aid of British Intelligence, which uses a ring of male and female belly dancers to track the statue to the Veiled One’s harem. Disguised as dancers, the detectives infiltrate it, setting up a climactic duel in the desert.
Set against the backdrop of an oncoming war, this book is a window into the lush complexity of the Ottoman Empire, the stark life of the desert bedouin, and steadily vanishing societies. Our protagonists enter a world of beauty and barbarity to find an artifact but find the hauntings of memory and perhaps a strange peace as well. The action that drives this unpredictable narrative will leave you eagerly awaiting the next installment in the Petrie and Pettigrew series.

Thought Choice Power: Charting the Course of Liberty in Modern Society by Plebeius
Tumblr media
Summary:
Thought Choice Power: Charting the Course of Liberty in Modern Society by Plebeius is a thought-provoking exploration of governance, civic responsibility, and the critical need for principled thinking in today's complex sociopolitical landscape. In an era when superficial messaging and polarized rhetoric often dominate the public sphere, this book advocates for a return to substantive, value-driven discourse rooted in our society's foundational principles.
In examining political economy's historical and philosophical foundations, Plebeius draws insights from past accomplished leaders. The book highlights perspectives stretching from Aristotle's to Dwight D. Eisenhower's, particularly those on Liberty, justice, and civic duty-timeless dilemmas that persist today. Through these insights, Plebeius offers a framework for understanding contemporary societal challenges and the role of citizens in preserving democratic principles.
Structured to guide the reader through a transformative journey, Thought Choice Power begins with a broad exploration of thought and its impact on society and then gradually narrows to specific issues like free will, justice, and the role of economic power in shaping policy. Plebeius combines historical context with philosophical insights to craft a cohesive narrative that critiques current affairs and offers a vision for the future. The book bluntly critiques the excessive influence of economic elites on political processes, making the reader more aware of the resulting disconnect between government and citizens.
At its core, Thought Choice Power is an investigation into the interplay between economic and political power, providing insight into how these forces shape public policy and societal outcomes. Plebeius assails the concentration of power in the hands of a few, argues that this imbalance is not sustainable, and advocates for a more equitable distribution of opportunities within a system of justice and equity. It calls for a balanced approach that realigns governance with democratic ideals and the common good of society, offering a hopeful vision for the future.
A unique aspect of the book is its focus on the individual's role in shaping society. Plebeius emphasizes the importance of individual awareness and the need for citizens to be informed, vigilant, and purposely active in governance and the economy. The book argues that democracy can only be sustained when individuals take responsibility, hold leaders accountable, and ensure that their choices align with Liberty's broader principles.
Additionally, the book discusses principled leadership, emphasizing integrity, wisdom, and a deep commitment to public service as essential qualities for navigating the complexities of modern governance. Plebeius calls for a renaissance of virtuous decision-making, urging leaders and citizens alike to adopt a more thoughtful, measured approach.
The book concludes with a call to action, urging readers to reclaim their civic power and actively participate in shaping the future. Thought Choice Power is more than just a book; it is a call for principled thinking and civic responsibility at a time when such voices are desperately needed. It provides a thoughtful approach to navigating modern society's complexities, offering insights to foster positive change and build a more just and equitable society.
For anyone committed to democracy and civic responsibility, Thought Choice Power: Charting the Course of Liberty in Modern Society offers a comprehensive and insightful exploration of the principles that underpin effective governance and societal progress.

Review:
During political uncertainty and stark polarization, it is essential to take a step back to evaluate the principles of liberty, justice, and leadership. Writing under the pen name Plebeius, the author of Thought Choice Power shares the author’s reflections on the principles of sound and principled governance. Drawing from the examples of past events and the writings of historical figures such as Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and James Madison, among others, the author explores the interconnected nature of humanity’s pursuit of happiness and freedom.
They boldly present the dangers of allowing greed and pride to corrupt the government and economy, emphasizing the importance of virtues like wisdom, justice, and integrity. This advocacy for competent leadership that prioritizes reconciling differences and upholding ethical governance is particularly relevant in our current societal context. The book makes a solid case for the need for citizens to hold leaders accountable, reclaim their power, and uphold justice and liberty for all.
I read the book from my perspective as a lifelong student of history and a practitioner of integrating social justice principles into leadership systems. I appreciated how the book highlights the critical need for competent leadership in governance, underscoring virtues such as courage, honor, justice, truth, and sincerity. It stresses duty-first leadership over personal gain and warns against neglecting virtues. These are all great reminders for leaders in different systems and institutions.
Education is highlighted as a foundation for societal progress and prosperity. In keeping with this theme, Thought Choice Power showcases sophisticated and formal writing with a deep understanding of political philosophy and historical perspectives on governance and leadership. Because Plebeius uses complex sentence structures and vocabulary, one could surmise that the author’s target audience is cerebral and college-educated.
People who advocate for social justice would benefit from discussions of economic disparities and the inequitable influence of wealthy entities. Plebeius highlights the interconnectedness of education, economic systems, and societal well-being. Readers would benefit from gaining a broader context of influence decision-making processes and work towards countering the negative impact of “monied interests” on society. I appreciated the author’s points about the need to counter the influence of wealthy entities to ensure fairness, liberty, and equality.
The book is excellent for managers, leaders, policymakers, decision-makers, and individuals concerned about societal progress. It provides a deep dive into the importance of ethical leadership, citizen engagement, and the dangers of neglecting responsibilities in governance and the economy. As the United States continues its trajectory toward forward movement, Thought Choice Power can serve as a practical template for how leaders and citizens can use their power to foster a just and prosperous democratic society.
Reviewed By: Maileen Hamto, Seattle Book Review
About the Author:
In short, the pen name Plebeius is not just a historical gesture – it embodies vital principles relevant to today's social and political climate. It reminds us that the fight for equal representation and justice isn’t confined to history and that every voice – no matter how small or seemingly powerless – holds the potential to effect change.
Let’s not fool ourselves: “We the People” are, by and large, plebeians.
And who are today’s patricians? There are clear parallels between the superrich of today and the patrician families of ancient Rome. Concentrated wealth, outsized political influence, control of cultural institutions, dynastic wealth, and extreme social privilege are persistent threads in time. But this isn’t to say that history repeats itself in perfect equivalence. The more pressing question is: will we, a society founded on the principles of liberty, choose to confront or accept today’s realities?
The name Plebeius serves as a reminder that the U.S. Constitution was constructed for the People – the plebeians – and that the true power in any democracy lies not with the privileged few but with all of its citizens.
I am Plebeius, and, like it or not, I suspect you are too.

Apricot Marmalade and the Edmondson Transmittal by Lon Orey
Tumblr media
Summary:
The war was not going well. The surprisingly effective Tet Offensive in late January 1968 had humbled and embarrassed the South Vietnamese and their American allies. It had sent a powerful message to the folks back home that this Vietnam thing was not going to be over anytime soon. The half million troops that the Lyndon Johnson administration had poured into this tiny Southeast Asian nation seemed to the world impotent, as their inability to subdue an outmanned and outtechnologied adversary became increasingly apparent.
To make matters worse for Johnson, the US war effort was getting bad press on the home front. Some news sources reported that the war was not being waged effectively. Others argued that it should not be waged at all, at least not with US personnel. Americans in general were wearying of its intrusion into their living rooms every evening on the six o'clock news.
Meanwhile in Bangkok, Thailand, less than five hundred miles away from the battleground, the special agents assigned to the 187th Military Intelligence Detachment, the US Army's counterespionage arm, are dealing with the war and its implications for the rest of Southeast Asia in their own way. They dress in civilian clothes and carry credentials while performing counterintelligence investigations and surveillance of suspected enemy agents. As a group, they are an unruly and undisciplined lot whose often humorous attempts to carry out their duties and stay out of trouble rarely succeed.
This is satire at its best!

Review:
Apricots never make an appearance in Apricot Marmalade and the Edmondson Transmittal by Lon Orey. What ensues instead is a hilarious tale of dysfunctional alphabet intelligence agencies operating in Vietnam-era Thailand. Ed Reynolds, the protagonist, is a reluctant warrior serving out his military stretch as an intelligence officer in a United States Army Military Intelligence unit. MI, as it is known, competes with the CIA, the Thai government intelligence agency known as the AFSC, and other assorted acronym agencies to gather intelligence about Soviet spies and the Thai communist party.
Reynolds and his fellow MI officers are led by Colonel Morgan, perhaps one of the most ill-suited intelligence agents ever to grace the pages of a spy novel. Morgan, along with his second in command Major Harris, a Doctor Strangelove type whose existence consists of washing his beloved red Mercedes and a desire to use nuclear weapons to solve all problems, seek to uncover the meaning of the mysterious Edmondson transmittal. The transmittal is the work of Agent Edmondson, who later encounters untoward circumstances. Finding and decoding the transmittal is the centerpiece of the conflict, as the MI team work to uncover a deadly plot that threatens their existence.
Written in a comedic, satirical style reminiscent of Catch 22, Apricot Marmalade and the Edmonson Transmittal is populated by intelligence agents who give truth to the oxymoron “military intelligence.” Orey populates the story with characters such as Trooper Cooper, a hypochondriac who internalizes every discussion about disease states, and Irv Bonner, an agent with an irrational fear of snakes who works in a country filled with poisonous ones. There is also Sargent Barnett, who takes up residence in a tent in the center of the city park so as to be better prepared should the unit have to go live in the jungle. This is a gang that can’t shoot straight, and one comic endeavor after another ensues. The scenes featuring Morgan attempting to bug his CIA counterpart’s office and the hilarious prisoner exchange with the Soviets are worth the price of admission alone.
The novel presents the reader with a realistic sense of place, as Thailand’s steaming, snake-infested jungles and humid cities set the backdrop for the action. The characters are all unique, with believable foibles and weaknesses. This is not the stuff of a James Bond movie, rather it presents the realism and comedy inherent in the human condition of mediocre intelligence agents struggling with the meaning of their work against the backdrop of the Vietnam War. As to the apricot marmalade of the title? I will leave its meaning to the reader to uncover.
About the Author:
Lon Orey served for three years in Military Intelligence for the US Army during the late sixties. Much of that time was spent in Thailand, with the Vietnam conflict raging practically next door. While this is a work of fiction, the framework within which the story is told reflects his real-world observations of the country and the various intelligence services operating there, including the CIA and the KGB. The story is very much a satire, written with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

The Crush of Wine and War by Molly Fumia
Tumblr media
Summary:
"Here is a book of exquisite honesty and profound depth... Along the way grief becomes a dance in the dark and suffering turns to love." -Sue Monk Kidd, author of The Book of Longings, review of Molly Fumia's Safe Passage
Austria, 1938. Two Couples struggle with the terrifying prospect of opposing the Nazis.
Sebastien Brandl, proprietor of a renowned Austrian inn, plunges headlong into the resistance while his wife, Hannah, deeply in love, secretly unsympathetic to the plight of the Jews, fights his choices and grieves for the idyllic lives they once led.
Maxmillian Mayr, owner of a huge Viennese wine estate, reluctantly follows his sons into defying the Nazis while his wife, the survivor of a pogrom, is consumed with keeping her Jewish identity and that of their two sons an uncompromised secret. Surprisingly, they share a common nemesis, Faber Ratzener, the Brandls' one time neighbor and now a ruthless Oberführer intent on bringing down both Sebastien and Max.
Both families are surrounded by a community of unforgettable characters: lifelong friends wrenched apart by Nazi false promises; a wicked, gossipy baker; a heroic, gay winemaking couple, a Rabbi desperate to get Jews out of Vienna; a lovable young man whose fate is tied to Hitler. In the end, they will intersect, coming together in victory and defeat, surprising romance, and astounding acts of resistance.

The One Week Writing Workshop is the perfect kickstart to any new writer’s career. Writer’s block will be a thing of the past for anyone who follows this guide. However, this book isn’t just for new writers; experienced writers will also gain valuable information from this resource.
Author Karin Adams is a seasoned writer who shares her personal novel-writing method in this book. The book is designed like a seven-day workshop you would attend in person, however it gives the writer flexibility to complete the activities at their own pace.
The book starts with tips to help the writer get started. These tips include creating affirmations, remembering what caused you to want to write, and creating the ideal writing space. I especially loved the ideas on creating a writing space because there are endless possibilities. Small changes like music, decor, and decluttering can really make a difference when you are trying to get the words out on the page.
Each day is made up of several small sections. These sections include: the warmup, core activity, and stretch.
The one day in the workshop that is different from the rest of the days is day four: plot and planning. On this day, the writer should complete the whole day’s activities in one day. This was my favorite day because it entailed the writer creating a storyboard using sticky notes. As someone who is more of a visual learner, I had a lot of fun learning the technique to create the storyboard. I liked being able to move the sticky notes from one section to the other to create a story that flowed well and made sense chronologically. As a new writer, I had never heard of this technique before. Outlining and diagramming are methods that are often taught, but they can get messy if you’re someone who does a lot of erasing and rewriting.
Another exercise that I found to be helpful was the one in which the writer takes a commonly used adjective and writes twenty synonyms for it. This was more challenging than I thought it would be. It was truly a cerebral exercise.
Overall, I found this book to be an excellent source for creativity, pacing, ideas, and unconventional methods that many authors may never have heard of. None of the exercises were complex or needed a lot of supplies or tools. Most of them could be done with things you have around the house. I recommend The One Week Writing Workshop to both new and veteran novelists of all ages.

CarboN The Primitivision by Larry Hodge
Tumblr media
Review:
Seattle Book Review – 5 stars
CarboN: The Primitivision is the premiere art book by Lawrence Armondo Hodge (aka CarboN). His new book is a collection of CarboN’s work from 1989 to 2021. This Bay Area native drew his inspiration from many cultures, styles, and art genres. As viewers flip through the pages of his book, it is easy to detect design hints from many civilizations and other artists. Mythological and natural forms can be seen in his drawings and figures from his imagination. The book spans thirty-two years of CarboN’s creative process. This book is broken down into four sections, showing the evolution of CarboN’s stylings.
This book takes the viewer through the years of his progression. Browsing through each section, one gets a sense of how CarboN’s art developed. His early works could be considered flash art. The pieces seem to be smaller and simpler but also detailed. The inkwork is lighter, and the art contains more open spaces. Later works tend to be more complex and abstract. Many later works are very involved, and CarboN explores the whole page. The lines get heavier and darker. At first glance, these larger pieces look like elaborate doodles, but the longer one studies them, the more one sees.
It has been said that all art should evoke emotions. CarboN’s works are no exception. Primarily black and white, some works are repetitive, giving them an Escher-like feel. Others are more in the style of Aubrey Beardsley. With the wide range of influences CarboN cited as his muses, it is hard to put a hard label on his works. Though, if I were to give them a genre, I would have to call his art psychedelic tribal with hints of surrealism and abstractism. It is not hard to lose oneself in the pages of this book for hours. Viewing the later works can be an all-day endeavor. The longer one explores these works, the more one will find.
The beauty of CarboN’s art is on full display in this book. It is well crafted yet simple and elegant. This publication would be a great addition for anyone who collects art books. CarboN holds off explaining his pieces, allowing the viewer to put their thoughts and emotions into how the art makes them feel. This book would be great as a conversation starter, for casual viewing, or in-depth meditations. Aspiring artists could draw motivation from this well-done tome. CarboN: The Primitivision is a highly fulfilling viewing experience.

 Reviews:
★★★★★“LeKodak's stellar debut is a science fiction thriller that utilizes elements of speculative fiction, apocalyptic fiction, and conspiratorial mystery in a globe-hopping narrative that chronicles a group of adventurers trying to unravel who—or what—was behind a software malfunction that killed tens of millions of innocent people. It is well-written, relentlessly paced, and thematically profound, and will surely appeal to fans of SF thrillers by luminaries like Clarke, Dick, and Crichton. This is the good stuff.”
Paul Goat Allen, BlueInk Review
★★★★★“It's refreshing to see a talented author like LeKodak take the trope into the dystopian disaster novel niche and deliver an action-packed tale that gives just as many blockbuster thrills as it does intelligent technological questions. The plot and its themes are the primary focus, but in the ensemble cast of characters caught in the crossfire, each one has good solid development and moments to shine. I recommend The Dawn of AI to enthusiasts of intricately penned and exciting science fiction everywhere."
K.C. Finn, Readers' Favorite Book Review
★★★★★“The characters are extremely well developed, which is quite an accomplishment given how many there are. The most intriguing characters to me are conjoined twins with incredible story arcs and whenever the point of view kicked back to them, for me, it was like a favorite song playing again on the radio."
Jamie Michele, Readers' Favorite Book Review
★★★★★“The Dawn of AI connects the dots between characters that I neither expected nor saw coming in a story configuration that has an after-before-after pattern. I love this configuration as it hooks immediately and then goes back to fill in the blanks after I am invested in the plot. Excellent storytelling. Very highly recommended."
Asher Syed, Readers' Favorite Book Review
★★★★★“With the rise of Artificial Intelligence being a hot topic in the real world right now, I’m grateful to see such thought-provoking stories that explore this emergent technology's potential. This book is an easy recommendation to anyone interested in exciting science fiction, which takes a prevailing concern of today's world and explores it with intelligence and consideration."
Lexie Fox, Readers' Favorite Book Review
★★★★★“The pitfalls of giving the machines too much control play out in the storyline of Ryan LeKodak's novel. His take on an apocalyptic event is so vivid it is frightening to contemplate. The Dawn of AI is a science fiction aficionado’s dream novel."
Essien Asian, Readers' Favorite Book Review
★★★★★“In a world where jobs and livelihoods are being increasingly threatened by AI’s potential, this book is a reminder that machine malfunctions will inevitably happen.”
Theresa Kadair, Los Angeles Book Review
 About the Author:
Ryan LeKodak is a science fiction author who lives in San Diego, California with his family. After emigrating from Vietnam in 1980 by boat, Ryan dreamed of becoming a doctor and nothing more. But upon learning the sight of blood made him squeamish, he pivoted from premed to begin a thirty-plus-year career in high-tech engineering, IT, quality assurance, and operations. Now a cybersecurity program manager based in San Diego, Ryan juggles a hectic career, raising his twin sons, and appeasing a needy Poochon puppy. At home, his lively boys take center stage, and their colorful comic doodles, adolescent puns, and wildly exaggerated stories from school inspired him to craft fast-paced science-fiction thrillers that explore the ominous potential of a future where AI surpasses human control. Through his writing, Ryan champions the extraordinary strengths that reside within each of us and celebrates the individual quirks that lighten fantastic worlds on the brink of disaster.

 Reviews:
Elaina Williams and Ric Peters are back at it in the second installment of the Yoga Mat series, Cobra Pose. This time, things hit even closer to home when Elaina’s father, Dr. Edward Williams goes missing. After Elaina doesn’t hear from her father in a week, she calls Ric up to enlist him in helping her find the doctor. In a note he had left her, he had said he was going bushwalking but did not leave any dates or other information. Elaina leaves her staff at Yoga Boronia to run the business and goes from Sydney to Brisbane with Ric to find her father. Knowing that her father is adept at technology, specifically cyber-security and data protection, Elaina starts to put the clues together and realizes her father may have been kidnapped by someone who has a use for his skillset.
There are so many well-thought-out parts to this book as in the first book. I love the relationship between Elaina and Ric although at times it seems that Ric is distracted and gives Elaina mixed messages. His obsession with only the best coffee and his taking up of tea draw humor into the book because Ric is such a masculine character. It is clear they both still care for one another. The scenery the characters pass through as they complete their adventure is descriptive yet not overbearing to the point it will bore the reader. The clues that Dr. Williams leaves Elaina are realistic, yet make the reader feel like there is a Nancy Drew element strewn throughout. The kidnappers who have different backgrounds each have very specific characteristics as well and the dialogue between the characters brings them to life. Elaina’s Uncle Max intercepts his way into the story when Ric and Elaina run into him after searching her father’s house. As Max’s dual identity reveals itself, the big guns are called in to help. Both Ric and Max’s backgrounds are very secretive, however, it is clear that they have resources at their disposal. I also love how a dummy yoga studio is created to bait the hackers/kidnappers. Genius!
With the latest Australian cyber-attacks occurring, this book delves into the topic of cyber hacking and the reason that cyber security is so important, both personally and in business. Cobra Pose is a cat-and-mouse game full of action, adventure, and danger. With twists and turns throughout the plot and a tearjerker moment that puts readers into a final stage of suspense, authors Rogers and Roosen have put together yet another fantastic thriller.

What do a woman, who used to train military personnel how to shoot straight, and a man, skilled at eradicating all sorts of hazardous materials safely, have in common? Both were designated law enforcement officers and they have now written two ‘knock ’em dead’ books … together!
John Roosen started his career as a biologist, served as a commissioned naval officer and environmental emergency specialist in the United States, and has lived and worked in Australasia, Antarctica, the Americas and the Middle East. At a moment’s notice, he would respond to chemical and refinery plant explosions, deal with rocket fuel plant meltdowns and dismantle illegal drug labs. With Susan, John delivered international security and safety training against terrorism to ports in the Pacific. As a change-up, John switched careers to chasing pirates and duelling with a con artist extraordinaire on a remote South Pacific island. In between, he organised jungle expeditions and deep-sea scuba diving. However, John’s experience extends beyond responding to cataclysmic disasters and includes mastering the intricacies of making soufflé omelettes without burning the edges.
Susan Rogers already knew she was a writer at age six, but her life took a major detour when she became a commissioned naval officer. As a designated law enforcement officer, she was boarding ships at sea and conducting structural and safety inspections. In addition, she developed civil defence programs for civilian populations. With John, Susan orchestrated sting operations. Susan also ran extensive weapons training programs and managed emergency responses for natural and man-made disasters. Susan worked in Australasia, the Pacific, the Americas and the Middle East. While posted in Abu Dhabi, she ran health and safety operations for multi-billion-dollar projects along the Persian Gulf. In her spare time, she directed the restoration of a Presidential yacht. In between, she has written several books and revamped a South Pacific maritime service. Susan continues to write: whether braced against the hull of a sailing vessel on a hard tack, during a crossing of the Middle East’s empty quarter in a Mini or bouncing around in a troop carrier in Australia’s outback.
After writing Surviving Paradise about their life in the South Pacific, John and Susan hatched their Yoga Mat Mysteries series. Dead Man’s Pose is first in the line-up, with Cobra Pose as the second book. Next will be Tree Pose – coming soon!

 Review:
Trouble is coming.
That's the opening portent of Deadly Repercussions, a suspense/mystery story that introduces brothers who are dual citizens of the United States and Mexico.
Alejandro and Manuel have chosen different paths in their lives, but their loyalty and family ties to one another remain consistent until death breaks them and leads one brother to exact revenge whil e a son left behind is indoctrinated into a street gang.
The fight for justice continues into new generations and a conflict as the story evolves, following Juan into adulthood. A daughter's safety is left to New Jersey boy Jerod Ventura, who moves from his initial burglary as a young man to become one of Juan's trusted friends.
The repercussions of murder resonate through different generations, relationships, and experiences. Karen Black weaves a powerful saga of disparate special interests, kidnappings and threats, and forces that clash as times change.
Black is particularly adept at following children into adulthood, from Elaina and Juan to Jarod, showing how family and friendships evolve against the threat and backdrop of violence and change.
Deadly Repercussions moves deftly between and among these disparate lives in a dance with death that keeps altering the characters in unexpected ways.
The mercurial timeline of shifting experiences and interests keeps readers thoroughly immersed in events that challenge relationships with heartache, love, adversity, and wasted lives changed by destructive impulses.
“Life is a masquerade with repercussions that can be deadly.”
Libraries that choose Deadly Repercussions for its special brand of suspense paired with inspections of generations that grow and change under the influence of violence and bad choices will find this story replete in not just suspense and mystery, but murder, loss, and the resonance of events that change future generations.

Squeeze Plays by Jeffrey Marshall
Tumblr media
 About the Book:
Squeeze Plays is variously listed as a financial thriller, a satire (Amazon category) and a modern morality play. It deals with business and finance - though in terms that most sophisticated readers can easily understand, even though they may know little about finance. The villain is a cunning Russian oligarch, which makes the novel timely.
The story offers an intertwining of three principal characters, with a fourth - a financial journalist - entering the picture as the agent who ties them together. Along the way, the novel is rich in simile and metaphor and casts a satirical eye on the foibles of the rich and well-connected in New York and London.

Reviews:
“Corbin van Sloot is a man who is well positioned in the financial world. He is the CEO of Whitehall, a financial firm with a long history that is held in high esteem. Corbin oversees the United States end of the business for the UK-based company. The winds of change have Corbin concerned, however, as the financial system appears more and more precarious. One of Whitehall’s key clients, Star Enterprises, is a newspaper empire that has been hemorrhaging money for quite some time. The higher echelon at Whitehall want to call in the loan as the newspaper company seems more and more unstable with each day. Corbin must balance the concerns of his day to day along with his desire to climb the social ladder while also covertly stepping out on his wife.
Winston Crumm is the head of a crumbling media empire. Star Enterprises has been in his family for generations, but the saturation of internet news sites and the desire for instant news has led to the decline of profits. Crumm appears to be oblivious to this, as he routinely puts off calls to his bank and forestalls the inevitable callback of a large loan. Crumm is staring into the abyss of ruin and embarrassment when he receives a call.
Maxim Ripovsky is a Russian oligarch who is as mysterious as he is charismatic. He desires to spread his wealth in the United States, by hook or by crook. He doesn’t have allies in business as much as chess pieces strategically placed, ready for the next attack. He senses opportunity in aiding Winston Crumm and propping up a storied tabloid empire. His loan contains some conditions, and once Crumm opts to accept, the trap is set. Ripovsky is wily and his machinations don’t end solely with him as benevolent benefactor. Ripovsky, Crumm, and van Sloot are on a collision course that may not bode well for anyone.
Squeeze Plays thrives as an intelligent book that explores three particular men and how their desires threaten to bring them down. Corbin seeks status, but his whole world would crumble if his philandering was revealed. Crumm is obsessed with the trappings of wealth to the extent that he ignores his daily tasks. Maxim desires power to the point of hubris, and his ambition may be larger than his view. Author Jeffrey Marshall has written an absorbing work suitable for the current status quo of the world, from the decline of the newspaper to the distrust of anything Russian to the shaky position of the financial world. The three principal characters are united in their fallibility, but the reader will find themselves captivated by their stories and how they’ll end.”
~ Philip Zozzaro, Manhattan Book Review
Take a rich, lazy and arrogant tabloid owner, a hard-charging bank executive who can’t keep his pants zipped and add a powerful Russian oligarch with buckets of money. Top it all off with a hard-working journalist intent on exposing financial misconduct and you have all the key ingredients for an exciting financial thriller.
Jeffrey Marshall’s Squeeze Plays (Atmosphere Press) takes us on a journey to New York, London, Nantucket and the English countryside. We follow Marshall’s rich pampered characters, from sailboats to penthouses and private jets to luxurious homes. This gripping thriller explores the upper reaches of the newspaper and global banking worlds as they collide with the unsavory manipulations of a Russian oligarch.
MONEY WITH STRINGS ATTACHED
Winston Crumm’s newspaper empire, Star Enterprises, is failing in the digital age and is in desperate need of cash. Corbin van Sloot is the CEO of Whitehall Banking Group, the company that is holding over $15 million of Star’s debt. Van Sloot ultimately decides to call the loan in order to protect his bank, should Star go under.
Enter Maxim Ripovsky, a rich Russian oligarch with no moral compass. Ripovsky generously invests $20 million in Star, but not without strings attached. Ripovsky wants to use Crumm’s newspaper as his own personal public relations tool. His goal is to ease his entrance into New York society and take advantage of the connections and business opportunities that entail.
Tensions rise when we learn that Ripovsky has purchased a large amount of Whitehall’s stock on the open market and is pressuring the bank for a board seat. Not only that, but Ripovsky has some nasty leverage on van Sloot — leverage that can destroy both van Sloot’s marriage and his career. And Ripovsky isn’t afraid to exploit van Sloot’s sexual escapades to achieve his nefarious goals. ~ Mark E Greene, BookTrib

 About the Book:
It started the day she heard Daddy slur, "She ain't mine. You had the nerve to name her Dawn. Look at her! You shudda named her Midnight!" Then Daddy left . . . for good. And the loving music that had filled Dawn's life went silent.
That was the day that a "Midnight" Duckling appeared in the mirror, took up residence in her chest, and controlled her ability to breathe. That was the day she learned to recognize "leaving time" . . . her superpower.
Couched in speculation, Jus Breathe is the tale of a young Black woman's struggle to defy her inner "Duckling" and embrace her true self. Set in New York City during the turbulent sixties, it's an improbable love story with precarious impulses, secret pasts, and inner demons.
Dawn, a survivor, flees her stepfather's violent home. While struggling to go to college, she perfects sofa-surfing and hones her ability to leave situations in an instant. But in the mist of the chaotic uprising that followed the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, serendipity spins Dawn into Danny's world.
Toxically in love, no longer a "leaver," Dawn realizes that in order to survive, she must break free of Danny's dominance. But that Duckling, who's allied with Danny, threatens to squeeze the life-breath from her if she dares to leave . . . that ugly, midnight-black Duckling, she has to kill.
 Reviews
“There is a layer in Jus Breathe, which feels like a blend of Jazz by Toni Morrison and Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson. All explore the stories of Black folks, specifically Black girls and women, as they are in reality. Dawn feels real because she is real; she embodies the tenacity asked of girls, especially Black girls. With this offering, Carter ensures a happy ending for at least one Black girl. With resilience, strength, and the power of her breath, Dawn returns to music and takes a lesson from Aretha Franklin: she was always worthy of love and respect.”
