scott summers is interesting to me mainly because he's the first student xavier teaches who specifically cannot live in normal society without accommodations that limit him in some way. his circumstances challenge xavier's idea that integration between mutants and non-mutants through the principles of mutual respect and acceptance is viable. cyclops is able to be in the presence of other people only under very specific circumstances, and i think this is the main difference between scott and his peers/xavier that makes his relationship to the x-men so complicated: his power if unchecked is destructive & he has no inherent control of it, and that's what makes it a disability instead of just an ability he possesses (other mutant abilities being, say, jean's telekinesis or nightcrawler's teleportation). this is compounded by his inability to control his blasts being a direct result of a traumatic head injury/his ptsd. in a perfect world where mutants were accepted, scott would still need the visor, would still be limited in what he could do because of that, and would still have the same issues hes always had. he doesn't need to accept that he's a mutant, he's well aware that he's a mutant, but circumstances outside his control have made it impossible for him to live the kind of "normal" life possible for other mutants in xavier's hypothetical world without prejudice. obvious allegories aside, this is tough for scott specifically because he's the leader of the x-men and is furthering xavier's goal of integration (an outcome that doesn't meet his needs or wishes) using his optic blasts (only controlled by a piece of technology charles xavier made for him) in weekly life threatening fights. this on top of the fact that his life has been generally terrible, he (rightfully) believes that every interaction with another person could result in their death if he's even a little careless, and that hes suffering from completely untreated & unaddressed ptsd and ocd, no wonder he acts in ways that don't make sense to other people! every person he's ever loved has been ripped away from him and every attempt he's made to live in normal, non superhero society has failed massively due to his mutation or involvement in the x-men, usually in a way that endangers himself and others! he's under a lot of fucking stress right now! because of his various disabilities and personal issues he can only be an x-man and achieving the idealistic society xavier dreams of would eliminate the need for the x-men, which puts him in a fascinating position in in-universe mutant politics. personally if i was him and my brother (whos basically the same as me but wasnt disabled by the plane crash that killed our parents) went to live with HIS girlfriend and retire from being a superhero and live a normal life like i've always dreamed of i would have joined the brotherhood of evil mutants instantly that would have been the last straw for me
