Hello! I just read your Hawks X Fuyumi fic... I never thought of that pairing before, but NOW!! I can't stop thinking about it. Thank you (or not??) for another obsession
Ahhh!!!!
I’m so happy you like them!!!! I’ve always found them fascination and was quite brokenhearted to see that they aren’t as popular as the rest of Hawks’ other ships??? But regardless, I’m happy!
I’m planning for a few more other stories, or perhaps a re-write of that particular scenario to be honest, now that we know we’re beginning to see the aftermath of that arc more and more. But hm :// we’ll see.
Thank you for this, though! I’m sorry I couldn’t get to you sooner, but it really warmed my heart to have found this in my inbox!! o(>ω<)o

we do not need to break to love
Summary: It's past the Dabi-Endeavour reveal. Hawks struggles to see his idol behind the mask, copes with his massive injury, and what everything meant for him. Todoroki Fuyumi has never been in this plan of recovery, neither is he in hers, but it seems that they're both two people who are more than meet the eyes and just possibly may need each other's help. Spoiler: Chapter 300 — but like, this is set in in the near future, after Dabi confronted Shouto and Endeavour again. Endeavour is massively injured, Shouto slightly less, and they’re in the hospital. Pairing: Fuyumi x Hawks
READ IT ON AO3
“You must’ve admired him.”
Her voice is not one out of accusation.
Hawks could tell that much, at least. He’s had handful enough of experiences to distinguish when one intonation is laced with malice and when one doesn’t. Todoroki Fuyumi, across from him, is polite and well-mannered. It’s almost unnatural, how she could’ve said that without any lingering confusion or resentment. Especially in the light of recent events. That is, the whole Endeavour-Dabi-gate.
Hawks wasn’t there - during the live streaming.
But he’d caught on quick, as soon as confirmation reaches his ears that Dabi’s reveal had been made public. It must’ve been - shocking, Hawks think, because during the time of the ambush and Dabi told him his name, Hawks had been caught off-guard himself.
Perhaps he should’ve investigated further, should’ve suspected quicker, should’ve let Endeavour known, maybe then there’d be some countermeasures in place, or at least Endeavour and the son wouldn’t walk into battle so stupidly blindly, but — what’s the use pondering about it now with a fried pair of wings on his back?
So, Hawks doesn’t blurt out his regrets.
He merely answers, “He saved me.”
She wouldn’t know how, not a lot of people do - but Hawks could still picture the small entryway where he used to sit, as if gearing himself for an escape when pops wasn’t around. Of course, Hawks never could. He wouldn’t know where to go anyway, and mama never wanted to leave. So, he’d stayed there; and he would still have stayed there, if it weren’t for—
But how does it feel, Hawks wonder, to have a father marching the streets as a hero, as someone the community is expected to trust, when the feeling he must’ve brought had been the same feeling Hawks would feel every time he thinks about his old man?
For now, Endeavour’s agency is keeping a tight-lip around the matter, and the public opinion is split between wanting Endeavour’s past actions being held against him while the other half poured out their sympathy for the last battle that’d nearly caused his life — the one he’s currently in ICU for.
Endeavour is currently in his second round of surgery.
Hawks isn’t sure where the other Todorokis are, but Todoroki Fuyumi is quiet and composed next to him. Her back is straight, her hair is pulled up in a bun. Aside from the slight darkening under her eyes, she looks unperturbed. A winter untouched.
Finally, he acknowledges — always the smooth-talker, masquerading as good faith when the topic is anything but. “But he didn’t save you.”
Todoroki Fuyumi’s expression changes - so minutely, one wouldn’t have noticed if they weren’t paying attention - before she smiles, and it’s almost sad, except it isn’t. It’s almost painful, except it looks worn. Outdated. It’s become only a small smile, full of everything Hawks couldn’t read, and nothing at all.
“No, Hawks-san,” She tells him. It’s a good-natured tone. “I saved him.”
And oh, what a confession.
Instantly, Hawks knows that there’s - more. More to it to the Todorokis than the image, than the straight-laced reputation, than the past that Todoroki Touya has decided to inform whole of Japan of. To think that someone as strict and sturdy as Endeavour, whose pride Hawks have witnessed first-hand could only be rivalled by so few, had this lone woman — not even a hero, really — stand by him.
Or maybe he’s oversimplifying it.
There are so many questions, and so little that Hawks knew he could truly pull any answers from. He’d like to think that hey, Endeavour must’ve not been so bad if he could still convince his daughter to stay here out of her own free will, enduring hours of merely waiting until he’s out of the OR again, but — he knows, too, that reality doesn’t often work like that.
I saved him, but what does it mean? How bad would Endeavour had had to fall in her eyes, in that private estate of theirs, that he needed saving from a young girl, his own daughter?
Some part of him — the one who is still a child — is eager to compare trauma. Did he hit you like my pops did? Did he throw curses like my pops dad? Even now, I could still hear him, my pops. But only when it’s bad; only when the day is a No Good Day.
Instead, Hawks say. “You don’t have to call me Hawks-san.”
“Ah,” For the first time, she seems slightly flustered. Her brows tugged together, “Do you have any other name that you’d prefer instead?”
Polite, even now. Even when Endeavour’s reputation had been crumbled to dust, when his firstborn son nearly burned him to his death.
Hawks sits, momentarily, in silence. Does he have any other name? He used to. His mom was the only one who’d call him by that name. Hawks finds himself - indifferent. Yes, thoughts of being back in pops’ place is terrifying, but anything else regarding the man, the name, had only been that: his pops had been just a man, and the name is simply a name.
Now though, with his wings pulverised to ashes and with recovery period estimating to last for twelve months — maybe more — just to see if his quirk is will to regrow what he’d lost, Hawks seems meaningless to keep.
Yet, Takami Keigo is a stranger. Even to himself.
“Call me Keigo-san,” He tells her, just as equally polite. “Or Keigo-kun if you don’t mind being friendlier. That’s my given name.”
“Oh!” Fuyumi blinks at him, “Could I, really? I shouldn’t.”
“I didn’t expect you to be shy, Todoroki-san.” The name itself is sticky against the roof of his mouth. Like a violation of trust: how dare he attaches the shared name she has with her abuser to her? But social etiquettes are hard to shake and, with a curious gaze, Hawks could see that Todoroki Fuyumi barely blinks at the name.
She smiles, this time her expression relaxes slightly unlike the other times before. “I wouldn’t call it shy,” she insists, “a traditional, perhaps. I wouldn’t want to overstep.”
“It wouldn’t be if I welcome you to.” He smiles, the heroic smile he knows cameras always want a glimpse off of. Hawks had never understood what had been so admirable about him, how he’d accumulated as much fans as he could — but being charming comes so easy. And if it’d given the affect that he had, all the better. “I just - I don’t think I could be Hawks right now, is all.”
And there’s a slight vulnerability there, despite the easy-going way he addresses the overall issue of his maybe-retirement. It still feels weird, being able to fully lean back against the plastic chair without feeling the shape of his wings. Not even a flutter of a feather.
Hawks tries not to think too much about it.
Torodoki Fuyumi lets the silence seeps and then, softly, Hawks hears her. “Then it’s only right if you’d call me by my given name too, Keigo-san. I’m Fuyumi.” She extends a hand — very American for someone who just called herself a traditionalist — but, gingerly, Hawks finds himself accepting it.
Her hand is cold, he notices.
