Been goofing around with some more Guild Wars model-ripping shenanigans and noticed that the "Corrupted"model of Trahearne is actually the same mesh as normal, just a few baked morphs here and there - but it's mostly a texture difference.

After some technical cleanup (vertex order, my nemesis) I was able to merge the two models as blendshapes, then a simple mix-shader was set up to handle blending between textures. And now, we can all watch him heeaal (ʘ‿ʘ✿) ehehaha!

Bonus: Canach mocap is done too, yayay!!!

I know that we typically frame it as 'Rytlock fucked up because he trusted a human (god)' but can we talk about the angle of 'a human (god) taking advantage of the kindness of a charr'? Can we talk about how Balthazar, the most human of the human gods, viewed Rytlock as something to exploit for his own gain? How the human gods viewed Tyria as something to exploit for their own gain? Do you think the charr treated the first humans with kindness, understanding the crucible of war and extermination, only to be met with a betrayal so sound it left the charr and their culture beaten and broken? Sorry, I think Kalla Scorchrazor just possessed me.

Shatter!!!! 🦋 All of the Guild Wars 2 classes are pretty great, but I think Mesmer will always be my favorite.

funniest recent guild wars 2 experience happened while in a rift hunting squad. we've got a full squad, 50 people. we get to lake doric and commander calls a 5 minute bio break. everyone goofs off and runs around for 5 minutes. then we wait. 6 minutes. maybe he's getting water, a snack. 10 minutes. someone busts out a harp and plays us some beautiful music. 15 minutes. people start jokingly questioning where commander is. "did he fall in." "is he coming back." "did he die on the shitter." 20 minutes. "oh my god," says one of commander's guildmates. "will locked himself in the bathroom." "what?" "are you joking?" "no, he's in discord right now. he can't get the door open." jokes abound. "dude must have rattled the foundation of the house" "yeah he's never living this one down." 25 minutes. "will is live streaming from the bathroom." "I'm scared to look." "he's got his phone camera on to show us that the door is jammed." 30 minutes. people are getting antsy. "can someone else in the house get the door open?" "no he's home alone." "uh oh lol." "i g2g soon..." 35. our ranks have dwindled. the squad is half gone, half scattered across the map to do tier 1's. our harpist has left. 40. "he's trying to call out the window for help." 45 minutes. "jesus fucking christ," commander says, "fuck." "he's back!" "how was your bathroom break." "I don't even want to do this map now," commander says. "let's not do lake doric right now. let's go to mount maelstrom." there are less than 10 of us left in squad. we dutifully follow him to mount maelstrom. commander goes to map chat. "doing rifts, 3 t1 1 t2 1 t3 on red tag. i locked myself in the bathroom for an hour." ?????? he announces it to the whole map. unprovoked. no one told him to do that. but i guess the people needed to know.

I guess I'll post these here, too - a more recent painting of my necro versus one of the first times I drew him, shortly after his in-game creation.

He wears the same head armor to this day, because it remains one of my favorite skins in the game, haha. I really love the design work from whoever the original devs/artists are who created this set and the leather armor set, especially (which is most of the skins that Malyck wears).

Parts of both these sets feel especially informed by real-world clothing or fashion to me, such that even though they are both vanilla skins, they remain some of my favorite design work seen in the game. I feel like both sets convey the sensibilities of the artist(s) in a way that I feel is less common with some of the more recent skins, I'm guessing because more of the design work is outsourced these days instead of done in-studio.

Some of those vanilla skins are so considered to feel part of that original worldbuilding - uniquely "Tyrian," if this makes sense. (Not that there's anything wrong with enjoying the current skins, to be clear - I'm more only commenting how they feel different to me, which is an opinion you are free and welcome to disagree with.)

The top painting is part of a larger painting that is 99% finished, more or less - I'll post that one at some point early this year.
