—CULLEN PAUSED FOR a moment, more surprised that the woman had offered her earbud than anything. “oh yeah? guess that explains why I don’t recognize it,” He glanced at her phone — at the unfamiliar spotify album being displayed there — and nodding, took hold of the bud. “you’re right. its only fair. They never play the good stuff on the radio anyway,” He held the device up to his ear. It was a little loud for his liking, but he didn’t bother to point that out. The beat was strong — really got your heart pumping. Before long, Cullen was bopping his head. “wow, way better,” He commented. “what other kind of stuff do they do?”
“I have a radio in my car, and it comes on sometimes and it’s all just shitty, generic pop music. This is the better stuff. That pop music can’t compete,” she admitted. Usually Mack wasn’t one to share her music or be so kind, but he’d been listening in anyway, and he hadn’t managed to piss her off. Yet, anyway. “If this were back in the days where CDs were still a popular thing, I’d offer to lend them to you. But they aren’t a thing in my world anymore, anyway. They do a lot of other stuff, though. Good stuff.”

“I’m not offended, I just–was curious.” She told the other while rolling her eyes and sighing. “No–go ahead I just, sorry I’ve had a hard day.” Which was actually an overstatement because nothing horrific happened to her and she was really just complaining for no good reason.
“Oh, strange, that. I never would have guessed,” Mack smirked and took a sip of her drink. She’d honestly expected the woman to bite back and had already prepared a response in her mind. But that plan changed pretty quickly. “I’m supposed to offer to listen if you want to talk about it now, aren’t I? That’s what people usually do.”

She hadn’t meant anything by the question, but clearly the other had taken offense and while normally she hated having any type of confrontation, she’d just been curious about what the other liked to during her spare time and hence she’d mentioned it. “I didn’t mean anything by it, I was curious.” And since this person was a stranger, she didn’t need to tell her that Maya actually spent a lot of time in the library, especially since Avantika was at that age where she wanted her to grow her knowledge as much as possible before kindergarten.
There was no shame in her about working in the library. She loved books, she really did. They were the only thing that really helped to get her out of her own head, and working in the library helped with that. But she was always kind of afraid that someone was going to say something utterly stupid or rude about it, and even if the woman didn’t look like she was the type, Mack never knew. “Right, well,” she took a breath. She definitely hadn’t made a good impression first time around, and for some reason that bothered her. In an attempt to fix the mess she’d made, she extended a hand. “Mack Russell. Librarian... and apologies.”

going for a walk, she brought rose along, her cavalier king charles spaniel. she was enjoying the weather tonight and was taking in the scenery, but was soon interrupted when she felt rose’s leash being tugged. glancing back at the small dog, she realized rose was rushing toward others and merrie couldn’t help, but smile at that. following behind rose, she gave the person a small smile before saying, “sorry about that. rose gets excited when meeting new people.”
Having expected nothing but a chill, calm walk, Mack was more than surprised by the appearance of a dog taking a liking to her. “I see that...” she looked down at the dog, eyebrows furrowed. “Strange. Most dogs totally hate me. I usually end up being barked at like crazy. Not this one, though. Huh.”

She listened the other’s suggestions, mentally ticking off the places she’d already been to quite a few times in town before she heard the remark about the library. “While I agree that books are amazing, I don’t know if it’s exactly what I’d call the place to be. But I’ll keep your suggestion in mind for sure.” She wondered what exactly prompted the other to make that suggestion and so she followed it up with a question of her own. “Is that what you do? Spend your time in the library, amongst the books?”
There was a tiny flicker of offense as the woman disagreed with her suggestion of the library being the place to be. She pushed it down, though, not wanting to create a bit deal out of it like she might have done a few years ago. But then, suddenly, her walls were up. It wasn’t exactly a secret that she worked at the library – and she loved her job more than she loved anything in the whole world. Yet Mack was so used to expecting the worst. “It’s my job, nothing more. What of it?” Her tone was a mix of slight offense but also of not having a care in the world.

“ hey, ” finn leaned against the library counter. “ what’s the worst book you ever read? ”
There was barely even a moment of hesitation in her answer. “Oh, easy – Wuthering Heights. It’s a classic, everyone loves it, but jeez, that was the most boring book I’ve ever suffered my way through.”

—ALRIGHT, SO CULLEN had basically walked himself into this one. He thought he at least had a handle on the most popular bands, though. “sorry, it was really loud,” He added with a shrug, as he frowned to himself. “no, not really. I’ve heard the name but I’m not big on the radio,” Read: he only listened to show tunes, because he was a giant fucking nerd.
Mack snorted. “The radio? Nah, this is better than all of that radio crap. This–” she tapped her phone, “is the real deal. They don’t play the good stuff on the radio.” She grabbed her earphone and held it out to him. “You’ve gotta hear it in all its glory if you’re gonna listen to it at all, buddy.”

owen furrowed his brows. “that wasn’t a joke,” he told her in a serious tone, not really seeing funny part of this situation. this is not what women usually did when he hit on them. normally, they would get flustered or even flirt back, but laugh? this was new. he honestly didn’t know how to react. “i wouldn’t actually mind you staring at me for a long period of time. if you haven’t already noticed, i’m incredibly good looking, so i’m pretty used to getting stared at.”
His attempt to tell her that he was being serious just made her laugh again, even though she could kind of tell that he really wasn’t seeing the humor in the situation. Still, she was well amused. “Oh my God, you’re so modest, too! Is that what you usually say to pick up all the chicks? Would me staring at you help to boost your already soaring self esteem? Anything for a person in need.”

rose resisted the urge to reach over and ruffle mack’s hair. something like maternal contentment filled her watching the younger girl drum her fingers against her own drink. “addy and arlo have it covered most nights. we can all bar-tend but unfortunately i’m the only one who can do our taxes.”
“You’re a better bartender than they are,” Mack shrugged and took a swig of her drink. “And you’re so much nicer. Who cares about taxes?” Okay, so she might be just a tiny bit tipsy. But her mind was clear enough to know what she meant. “Make bartending your full time job.”

“yeah” rowan replies, looking over at the girl yet again. rowan didn’t mind her hair, she wished she could do something different with it though. “i’m tempted. i mean, of course but which colour though? that’s the question” she muses.
Mack studied the girls face for a moment before deciding. “You’d suit blue or purple, I think. But the purple would really compliment your eyes, in my opinion,” she suggested. “I can give you the details of a really good hairdresser. They’d be good to fix... all that.”

rose hadn’t bar-tended regularly since college. she spent most of her nights in the back of holiday brewing crouched over a computer screen putting three ivy league degrees to good use. it was nice to get back into the saddle sometimes and give addy the night off. now she raised her eyebrow across the bar conspiratorially, hand fisted around a bottle of scotch. “that’s cute, i’m cutting you off.”
Smirking, Mack watched as Rose dealt with the dodgy customer that she herself had been watching, kind of amused, for the past few minutes. When she was done, Mack called out to her. “You’re good at that, you know? You should bartend more. There certainly would be less assholes in here. You’d scare ‘em off.”

“don’t be so conceited, not everyone’s looking at you,” wren was quick to snap, crossing her arms and glimpsing away in a very conclusive manner. however, after a few beats of silence, she was quick to flip. producing her phone from her pocket, she suddenly had a newfound sense of purpose. “—but while we’re here, mind if i grab a shot for the insta story? followers will eat up the whole moody, faceless image in the golden hour. don’t worry, i’ll tag you.”
“Excuse me?” Mack was taken aback by the response. She wasn’t offended, well, not totally offended – more surprised, and it took her a moment to recover, but, by that time, there was a phone in her face. She swatted it gently away with a hand. “I’m not a tourist attraction, nor am I an aesthetic for your pinterest board. Tagging won’t be necessary as there won’t be any picture to tag me in, please and thank you.”

continuing to stare, erin didn’t realize what was going on until mack spoke up. a second later, they shook their head before saying, “huh? oh, my bad. i was just staring off into space and thinking of what to eat later for dinner. i apologize for being rude.”
“Okay,” she dragged out the word. “I sure hope you thought of something good to eat for dinner while you were staring at me... and–” she tugged at the pink of her hair. “I hope it’s not candy floss.”

Elena heard the words from the other and watched as she quite rudely just slid into the empty seat across from her, apparently standing this was her table, which didn’t really seem likely. “Strange, it didn’t have a reserved sign on it for you.” She said, taking another sip from her coffee as she waited to see how the other would respond.
“You can ask the people that work here,” she shrugged a shoulder. “I sit here pretty much ever day. Have done for years, bud. But if you’re so offended by my presence... didn’t realise this seat that you’re not sitting in was reserved, too.”

Maya was thankful for the other pointing her in the right direction, until she heard her words and ended up smiling. While folding her map up she glanced at the other woman. “Okay, so what other places would you recommend?” Maya had been around to Holiday a few times in the past, but she knew the town was ever changing so there must be more exciting places that have popped up this year as well.
Mack shrugged. “Well, there’s a bar. It sells good alcohol. And there’s a diner, and it sells really good pancakes,” she suggested. “Or, if you’re one of the last few people in the world who are smart enough to realise that books are good, the library is the place to be... some might say.”

owen couldn’t help but jump at her hostile words. he wasn’t expecting her to be so vicious– most women weren’t like that, especially when it came to him. “no, no, there’s not a problem at all.” he shook his head. “can’t a guy just stare at a beautiful girl? with no reason? i don’t think it’s illegal to do so.”
Mack snorted at his response and shook her head. “You’re funny,” she hummed, and she meant it. What sort of person even said lines like that anymore? “It’s not illegal, it’s just kind of creepy. Want me to stare at you for a long period of time and see if you agree?”
