and thankfully, he did. because god's, did barton feel like he was on the road to downward spiraling. one new doctor there proved to be an absolute barbarian... perhaps worse than even the infamous doctor orion for him, who seemed to hate him the instant he took one look at him. pyrotherapy or artificial fever was an outdated therapy for a reason; it didn't work for mental illness, and most of all, it was just plain ridiculous to think that forcing an elevated body temperature upon someone could help their mind in any capacity. but of course the asylum had attracted a doctor that, for all extents and purposes, should've had his medical license revoked as far as barton was concerned. so although it took a painstakingly long time for it to happen, his death couldn't have come sooner, in his opinion.

making someone physically ill and then forcing them to suffer through it by giving them strong sedatives was abuse. plain and simple, and it was amazing that the literal serial killer could understand this, but not doctor wagner. oh well... barton could only muster to put a cold compress on his head and pull some covers over his body once he got home. he was too exhausted, and too jittery to do much else. so barton was thanking his lucky stars that at least he wouldn't have to be alone while suffering through this when he heard a knock at the door. leaving the door open specifically so viktor could get in was a good idea as there was no way he was getting up without help now.

god's, barton thought, viktor needed to stop being so damn hot whilst he was shaking like a leaf in his arms. though that kind of thing normally would've raised alarm bells in other people's brains and understandably so. barton, however, was different from those people. the truth was... his fate was in the hands of more than just one person while at arkham. but the ones who stood by, who were complicit and just went along with what the doctor told them to do, were people that barton tried not to concern himself with. his main oppressor was gone and that was all that mattered, right? barton clung onto the fabric of viktor's shirt with one hand as he dug his head into the other's shoulder.

the thought of admitting that it had happened at that moment and thus he let some of them off way too easy felt semi-mortifying at that moment, admittedly. because although they shouldn't have done it in the first place, yes, it was a fact that they were still out there. barton tried not to dry-heave as he looked up from viktor's shoulder, his lips twitching into a snarl at the thought these people were probably thinking they got away with it. all he could do at the moment was chuckle humorlessly whilst he shivered and let one of his hands fall from viktor's body.

so... going back to talking about how barton has ASPD and thus, canonically has some issues with regulating his emotions / never quite became fully emotionally mature, what i talked about a while ago with him sometimes (potentially) getting jealous whenever his friends seem to get all 'buddy buddy' with someone else quickly because he was friends with them first? that same kind of principle of these people essentially being 'his' in a kinddd of unhealthy and childish way does occasionally imply to his romantic relationships.

and whenever i say this, i specifically mean if barton feels like he's about to be abandoned by them and/or in particular if they're kind of on the outs with each other — and as a result, they would deny that they're in love with him + then try to leave. because although it's VERY unlikely for barton to ever physically try to hurt his partners even in moments of great distress like this, he would respond with the same kind of child-like emotional immaturity that i was talking about and essentially be like 'you can't leave me. i love you, and you love me. you're mine' while sounding completely genuine BUT also devastated.

which whenever you look at it... yeah, it may be understandably kind of scary on the other person's side BC whenever barton gets emotional, he can quickly become unpredictable. but the way he would say it would just be so. AUGHHH the best way that i could describe it is that barton would say it in a very confused as well as kind of just factual way at first. basically like 'you're mine, and you should know this' BUT yeah, if they continued to try to leave him is when thing's miiight start getting slightly more sinister BC like i said. although there is a next to zero chance of barton physically hurting his partner because he's just simply not like that, he does have problems with controlling how assertive / aggressive he is and he may just end up saying it in a more insistent way where he's yelling at them like 'you're mine, you can't leave me!!!'

and yes, this is definitely not behavior that i condone BC it is kind of scary like i mentioned. but the way in which barton wouldn't even realize that he's being aggressive, because of the fact that he's always been like this where he feels he does have some sort of claim over the people he loves in a selfish way is just. GAH it's good for the arguably (slight) horror aspect of it and how it would show more about how, yes, despite barton being an absolute SIMP for his partners most of the time; sometimes he may be set off by things they do and that isn't their fault, OFC. it just says more about just how unstable his mindset is if that makes any sense + i find that kind of interesting in a morbid way 😅

AHHH, hello, anon! thank you so much for the ask :D i honestly do have a LOT of headcanons on barton's daughter. however, since they are plentiful as i said here, i'll just go ahead and share a few with you all + if you wish to hear more about her... you could always message me if there was something more specific you wanted me to cover for her!! but yeah, i'll just give you a few right here:

i have kind of assigned every member of the mathis family their own 'animal' so-to-speak according to their traits and what they best symbolize; and for me, matilda has always represented the cunning as well as the duality behind the symbolism of a snake. this is because, while matilda does take after her father in a lot of ways, i also headcanon that does have a softer / human side to her as demonstrated best with her behavior towards her siblings. or, most specifically, her little brother named jack. the cunning part of it might be obvious, but just in case you all don't know, matilda is also a serial killer known as 'dollhouse' that is known to paralyze her victims before she kills them with a butterfly sword laced with a paralytic. this is also where the snake symbolism comes in as snake venom can cause similar effects to whomever might be unlucky enough to get bit by one.

matilda is a fraternal twin to louis, so they both have the same birthday but they don't look exactly alike. and she is older than him but its only by about five minutes or so though (': thus, matilda does take on the role of the 'eldest child' most of the time and tries to guide her younger siblings down the right path any way she can.

whenever it comes to her personality, she is known for being more brazen than barton in terms of what she deems is appropriate and not appropriate to say to other people. so matilda is even more honest when in the presence of other people most of the time, but she is arguably less 'unserious' than barton is himself. however, some parts of matilda's personality are kind of goofy in and of themselves as she likes doing things such as make little villages out of flower pots using clay as well as things she'll find around their families garden like small pebbles, moss, flowers, etc. to put in her little villages.

matilda also has a leather-working hobby, but it is quite expensive to fund, so she usually finds ways to try to make the most out of the little leather she can afford such as making homemade wallets as something she can gift to people + also making armor that she can integrate into her costume as dollhouse. thus, as one can imagine, matilda doesn't purchase a lot of leather but when she does... she makes sure that she doesn't waste it anddd she usually has to save up for a while to do so.

she currently works as a patient care technician at a residential treatment center in gotham that treats teens with substance abuse issues as well as offers mental health care in general. and honestly, she likes it a lot. like to the point where matilda was surprised herself how much she liked it. but it seemed like getting to help these kids who were in a rough spot makes her feel fulfilled and the doctors, as well as the general staff there praise her + have encouraged her to try to go into mental health due to how compassionate she tends to be around them when providing them with care.
