I know Beastars came out a while ago and it's not really in the zeitgeist, but fuck it. I have some thoughts about Mizuchi Beastars and I'm typing them out.

This bitch.

If you know who this character is, then you too are aware that she's a bitch, but there's some real-world context that adds another layer to her bitchiness. To be clear, I don't think the author of Beastars was aware of this context when writing it, but fuck it, it's a new lens for viewing the character.

Mizuchi is an endangered(?) Harlequin rabbit, whose boyfriend is another Harlequin rabbit. Her boyfriend has sex with Haru at some point, and that's why Mizuchi bullies Haru. (in Haru's defense, it seems like the boyfriend was the one who initiated, and it's not indicated whether or not she was aware he was taken.) But Mizuchi makes a very, VERY big deal out of the fact that she's a rare Harlequin rabbit and How Very Dare You Threaten The Continuation Of Our Race You Hussy.

However, there's a bit of real-world context to harlequin rabbits that adds another layer to Mizuchi's behavior. Harlequin rabbits are indeed a real thing, and they are relatively rare, but they're not endangered.

In fact, I don't think they even can be considered endangered, because Harlequin rabbits aren't a species. They're a domestic breed.

Harlequin rabbits being rare isn't the same situation as, say, giant pandas or whooping cranes being rare. Even if they are uncommon, so long as there are rabbit fanciers who are interested in breeding them, they're not going to go extinct. And they are the same species as every other domestic rabbit in the world, just with a different pattern.

But, okay, Mizuchi and her boyfriend aren't regular IRL pet rabbits who could be bred to create more show-quality Harlequin rabbits. They're Beastars rabbits with human-like bodies and human-level intelligence who choose their own partners and don't necessarily have human owners who will make sure there are more Harlequins in the future. Okay then. Maybe they could actually go extinct in Beastars world.

So, next question: based on Harlequins being an uncommon domestic rabbit breed, what are the implications of their potential extinction?

Answer: not much of anything.

Again, they're a breed and not a species. They're just domestic rabbits with a uncommon coat pattern. There are no ecological implications to whether or not Harlequin rabbits are a thing. If they did go extinct, it would probably just take a few generations of selective breeding to bring them back.

What happens if giant pandas go extinct? Giant pandas can never exist again, and their absence would cause a domino effect with other species that share their habitat.

What would happen if Harlequin rabbits go extinct? Rabbit fanciers would be sad about it.

So if we apply this bit of real world context to Mizuchi and her boyfriend, she looks like an even bigger bitch than before.

Mizuchi and her man don't even really seem to like each other, but they're together because they're the same type of uncommon rabbit and according to Mizuchi, they MUST be together for the continuation of the noble Harlequin Master Race.

What do you want to bet she holds that over his head every time they have a slight disagreement? What does she even bring to the relationship, other than the fact that she's rare?

tl;dr Mizuchi, shut the ever loving fuck up about being endangered. You are not a giant panda, you are not a whooping crane, you are not a bottlenose dolphin. You are a regular-ass domestic rabbit with a slightly unusual coat pattern, so stop fucking milking your "rareness" for sympathy and status every time you have a disagreement with someone. You hear me, Mizuchi? You will never be a goddamn panda.
