It's weird that I always see the ghosts of Discourse but never the actual Discourse, like I just see people making salty posts about how "people always say x about y" but I've never actually seen anyone saying x. Is this even real?? Where is this happening???

You can play a straightforward Shylock as sympathetic (though I wouldn't bother) and I would love to see an actual Jewish portrayal of that charming murderer Israel Rank. You can't do that with Fagin as written, because of the constant physical descriptions of him as monstrous and fanged and cackling. To humanize him, you have to create a totally new character, as the musical and Disney did- which I don't mind, that's a great character! If you just take out the Judaism, you get a horror movie monster in a realist work.

I left The Sympathizer at work (boo!) so I can't read it over the weekend. However, I did finish Tracy Flick Can't Win (good). I think I'm gonna try to knock out The Girlfriend.
Tumblr media
I did not realize I had so many books in my tote bag, but I’m going to try to finish them before I read anything else. We have:
Crush by Jane Futcher
The Marquis Who Mustn’t by Courtney Milan
The Girlfriend by R.L. Stine
The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen (about a third finished)
Sweet Treason by Patricia Gaffney
The Power of the Dog by Thomas Savage (about a third finished)
Tracy Flick Can’t Win by Tom Perrotta
Once I get through with them, I’ll start tackling the books on the coffee table.

This isn’t commonly known but one of the rings of hell is actually being in a fandom wherein the popular bloggers have the worst opinions known to man that everyone else parrots

Sometimes people will say to eat carbs or sugar or whatever in moderation, and what they’ll mean is “eat proteins/veggies as well and don’t eat an entire thing of candy beans in one sitting.” But other people mean that you should eat fruit like it’s LSD (in controlled circumstances, very rarely, and maybe have a note penned to your shirt like in the Mad Men episode where Roger goes on a trip).

I always forget that Luke Skywalker is (to all available evidence) not deliberately queer-coded or played as gay. I don’t even feel strongly about the queerness I have imagined for him; I just always assumed in the back of my mind.
Him and those guys from The Fast and the Furious, but they make more sense because my friends in high school used to turn the volume way down and narrate the first movie as though it were a romance. I’ve never seen a movie from that franchise any other way.

Why do people need subtitles to watch a show in English? I don't get it. What is wrong with the ears of young people?

This is the only post I’ll make about Taylor swift and I’ll leave it be but my problem isn’t even with her, it’s with the people that listen to her. There are so many of them and they are perfectly fine with her writing music with the sophistication of a teenager. They grow older in age but continue to accept her juvenile output year after year after year. What is going on? I don’t think there is a musician that ever had people this obsessed and yet it’s the lowest quality of writing and sonic fidelity of anyone with a comparable fan base. It’s just indicative of our decline as a human race. I’m worried sick.. The things that have been done to these peoples minds for them to accept this… I’ve been witnessing it we have been under psychic attack for generations and it has lead to this. I am now living in a world with people who have no control over their own minds anymore. It’s over… it’s really over

Nothing gives the same kind of random ego boost like managing to finally clean up your home and making it nice. Like ooh look at me, I'm living like people do, I made myself iced tea and I am eating my snack from a real plate. I got floors and shit.

I never read the YA/MG author Marilyn Sachs before, but I just finished Call Me Ruth (1982) and it stabbed me in the heart. Just some top-tier complicated, bittersweet mother-daughter shit right there.

some of you people are so obsessed with having an acceptable group to ‘punch up’ at that you would rather pretend a marginalized group are Basically The Oppressors™ than listen to their valid criticisms about the fact that ‘punching up’ very rarely hits the intended target, and the majority of the actual damage of that act is suffered by fellow marginalized people in your own community. there is a significant difference between venting frustrations about privileged groups and just outright attacking anyone who (you assume) experiences that axis of privilege regardless of - and in many cases outright denying - their actual lived experiences. it goes far beyond just ‘venting frustrations’ when what you’re really doing is trying to find a moral justification to bully people you don’t like, and when your own desire for catharsis and moral superiority leads to ignoring the voices of the vulnerable people you hurt. you’re not ‘punching up’ - you just like punching people for the sake of punching.
