Madeleine loved this little shop. It was so quiet and a nice spot to check her social media on her breaks or just chill and read the paper. It was convenient for her too, considering it was right across from her hardware store. If she wasn’t getting her usual drink, she could be found at the flower shop, smelling the scents of all the different kinds of plants. She even had a bit of a green thumb herself.

Blowing on the hot liquid a bit, she picked up her cup once more and took small, short sips, nodding her head to answer her new friend’s question. “I do. I do have friends, Norman and I have made them all on my own. I’m a big girl.” She smirked, feeling amused. He was awfully charming. She thought of his next comment and she nodded. “I don’t know about that for me all the time. Sometimes, I like to work alone. Be alone. I think everybody is that way, though.”

Glancing down at an article in the paper that caught her eye, she smiled. “Not to change the subject completely with something else, but I love reading about people who adopt animals and give them good homes. Do you like animals? Have any pets?”

Chill, Maddy. Let the boy breathe.

“Actually, I’m 23. The only reason I mentioned age is because I’m always told that I look too young to be managing a store pretty much on my own. It’s like people don’t trust me to do a good job or something because I look a certain way.” She shrugged. “It gets old after a while.”

“So, uh, how long have you lived in White Pine Bay? I’ll admit, I’ve only just started seeing you around. Maybe I should go into town more?”

“Madeleine? Your order is ready.” The young blonde turned her head to look in the direction of the barista who was lifting a cup in her hand. “Hold that thought.” Madeleine shot Norman a smile, then skipped over to the counter to pay for and pick up her coffee. “Thank you!” She made her way back over to the table where Norman was sitting, taking up the spot across from him.

“Sorry about that.” She brought the steaming beverage up to her lips and took a small drink, then set it down in front of her for it to cool down a little before she had any more. “To answer you, yes, it is a challenge, but I’ve had some friends help me out. It wasn’t all just me.” She nodded, shrugging her shoulders. “There isn’t really a time where Sam isn’t busy.” She sighed, not wanting to think about her husband and the fact that he was barely around. “17? How old are you now? You look so young. That’s not a bad thing, though!” She laughed.

“Not long. About 3 months. It took a little while for my husband Sam and I to get moved into our new house. I fixed it up along with the store pretty much by myself since Sam has been away on business. It’s been open about a few weeks now.” Madeleine smiled at the boy sitting across from her with the pretty blue eyes, sipping her coffee. “What about you, Norman?”
