This tweet reminds me of the time Katrina asked me if I had seen many queer-centric films and I admitted that I had seen very few. Not because I was actively trying to avoid them or anything. Mostly because all of the most popular ones are usually depressing Oscar bait where straight cis actors pretend to be miserable for 2 hours. Yes, there are many tragic stories and they do need to be told (with appropriate actors maybe). But sometimes it is overwhelming and hard to watch only tragedy. If you only watched Hollywood films about LGBTQ folks you’d think they had never smiled once in their entire damn life. 

How about a lesbian romantic comedy? A trans superhero movie. A disaster movie where no one listens to the Black non-binary scientist and then the White House gets stepped on by a sea creature. 

Thankfully there are a few more choices when it comes to Black cinema, but it is still a sparse selection comparatively. Black folks deserve more than just Tyler Perry. And they certainly deserve to win Oscars for movies other than ones that depict slavery or driving around white people and teaching them not to be racist.

We need a renaissance of joyous media depicting marginalized groups.
