LINE
Line can play an incredibly important part in any photo and usually will contribute to the composition in 2 different ways. The first is to set the scene and create a mood for the viewer, the second is to lead the viewers eyes around the composition to various aspects such as focal points or interesting parts of the composition. I used line in the first photo taken on the Canon 6D by filling the whole composition with nearly straight lines only from a few buildings, signs and vehicles. I feel like I was successful in highlighting just the use of line to create a whole composition. I will continue to implement line throughout all the photography I do and definitely consider it before taking any photo from now on.

LAB 1 - Composition DSLR
Now I have got to grips with various principles that can help create a composition I’m going to use a Full Frame DSLR and more time to create photos that relate to each various principle and talk about my research and findings...

LAB1 - COMPOSITION
The following photos were taken on my OnePlus 6 smartphone and were taken under pressured conditions to see what we could create given a single word and limited time.
(Photos from left to right from top to bottom row)
VALUE
I found that this plant had a huge contrast in shades of green throughout it due to the different aged leaves but also how much light was hitting the the plant. I then made the image black and white and added a little extra contrast to really show the variety in values of colours captured in this image.
SPACE
This image was taken to simply show the space that the view above me had in it. The simplicity of the photo helps to show how bare the sky is and how it can be filled with so much more. I feel this is one of the harder topics to photograph in the time frame and will try harder to make a better composition with the photos I take on the DSLR.
MOTION This image was taken when I was playing around with the portrait mode on my camera phone and also the shutter speed and resulted in a sense of movement and energy throughout the plant and adds more life to the image.
LINE This photo was taken to utilise the rule of thirds and diagonals as I took it from a low angle looking up to a building on campus which created an interesting angle that isn't seen by a regular pair of eyes. There are many receding lines throughout the piece which contribute to bringing it together as one.
MASS/VOLUME
This photo was not originally for the intension of being used for this title but looking back on it, it fits the bill well. The plant in the composition is made up of many smaller parts to fill a large space and this is clear to see by the huge depth the plant goes to. The reason I made it black and white was to further define all the individual shapes within the image.
COLOUR
I had my Ultimate Frisbee in my bag at the time and gave off some amazing lighting when the reflections from the sun hit the camera on my phone right. This combined with the nice pattern if reflective material made for a very vibrant and energetic photo.
SHAPE I took this photo outside the Lab room as I found the variety in shapes found in a small space very interesting. The variety includes the parallel tubing and patterned holes in the metal sheets to the bright orange panels on the wall.
TIME
Not only is the composition of this photo really strong but the colours and focal point on the leaf make it a very engaging photo. The details in the old leaf are a great contrast to the younger much more fresh leaves in the background. The reason this photo depicts time is how there is a contrast in the ages of the leaves in the photo as some are greener and smoother making them much younger and the older leaves are brown with much more detailed textures.
TEXTURE
The leaves in this image had a very interesting texture for a plant and is why I chose this photo to represent the word. I increased the contrast and detail a little to bring the details in the leaves further.
Conclusion
This process of taking photos fast proved to be a challenge for my creativity as I had to think fast and use what was around me to create the best image possible. I will now use what I have learned and further develop these photos with a Full Frame DSLR. I will take longer to create these photos and go further afield to take them but will continuously be asking myself why I am taking any photo and what elements I am trying to include such as line, colour, texture etc within the composition.
