In complete awe while visiting the lab where Thomas Edison first created light and recorded sound. Henry Ford brought the lab, including the dirt and grass that was home to failed inventions thrown out the window, all the way from the Menlo Park, NJ to The Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. #civilladetroit #fieldtrip #jerseypride (at The Henry Ford)

Photographer Christopher Payne’s specialism is capturing America’s historic architecture and industrial heritage. In his latest project, Textiles, Payne documents the colourful behind-the-scenes world that is America’s niche textile industry. Celebrating the “craftsmanship and the small-scale manufacturing that is still persevering in the face of changes to the industrial process and global competitions.”

More Than a School: A Lab for Sustainability
Designed as a net zero building—one that harvests as much energy from renewable on-site resources as it uses—the Kathleen Grimm School defines a new standard for energy efficient schools in New York City and around the world. Its many sustainable design features include photovoltaic panels on the building’s roofs and south facade, skylights and reflective ceiling panels that amplify natural light, a geo-exchange heating and cooling system, energy recovery ventilators and demand-control ventilation, and a solar thermal system for hot water. The building itself is also an active participant in the educational process. Interactive dashboards displayed throughout the school present real-time data on energy usage and production, allowing for immediate feedback on energy choices and healthy competition between classes and grade levels. Why do studies with 147 participants unrepresentative of the key market get such attention? As if the 'willfully ignorant' undergrads of OSU are a worthy benchmark to evaluate trends in ethical consumption or a morally righteous segment whose opinion matters.

In nature, innovation and adaptiveness comes through the layering and architecture of structures, rather than through the creation of new types of materials.
