LOVE LETTERS TO MOVEMENT LEADERS: AI-JEN POO
Tumblr media
Dear Ai-Jen Poo,
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and I’m dedicating this letter to you – and all the domestic workers caring for our families and others every day.
Like me, you first dipped your feet in organizing while you were a student. While attending Columbia in the late 90s, you organized with CAAAV, an organization serving Asian and Asian American communities in New York.
As many good organizers know, our job is building relationships and trust. While at CAAAV, you reached out to immigrant women service workers and noticed domestic workers kept showing up. You said, “We were just starting to see the abuses facing domestic workers. And once you started to see it, you couldn’t not see it.”
Tumblr media
You and I both see the personal as political. You could not allow the exploitation of domestic workers, who are our mothers, sisters and aunties, continue. The injustice gripped you so hard that you spent hours every week walking between commuter railway stops, the kid’s section of bookstores, and playgrounds speaking to domestic workers, sharing about your lives, and building a collective.

Queer, Asian, and Here for It!!!
Issues affecting LGBTQIA+ Asian and/or Pacific Islander communities in the United States:
HIV & Health Inequity:
Lack of access to HIV prevention and testing services.
More than one in five Asians living with HIV are unaware of their status.
Some of the factors contributing to this problem include language barriers, stigma related to LGBTQ identities, fear of discrimination and harassment and family pressures.
Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders have the fourth highest rate of HIV diagnoses in the U.S.
Numbers are likely conservative because of inadequate data collection.
Access & Discrimination:
In the U.S., roughly 32 percent of Asians and Pacific Islanders have limited English proficiency, which can be a serious barrier to accessing a range of crucial services in housing, healthcare and education.
A study by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development found one in five Asians and Pacific Islanders has experienced discrimination in the rental and home-buying process.
Rates are likely higher among LGBTQ Asian and Pacific Islander people due to the lack of federal non-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Stigma & Persecution:
Because of the wide variety of countries and cultures across Asia and the Pacific Islands, attitudes toward LGBTQ people vary greatly across the region and among Asian and Pacific Islander people in the U.S. In general, many of these nations are far less accepting of LGBTQ people than other parts of the world – especially when it comes to legal protections like marriage equality and non-discrimination laws.
LGBTQ Asian and Pacific Islander people in the U.S. often have to contend with families and cultural traditions that are not entirely embracing of their identities.

Never come to me and say Natives aren’t discriminated.
My own family had been discriminated against in the Canadian healthcare system.
I’m so tired.

Fatphobia isnt just being bullied for being fat.
It’s being forced to shop online and spend more money because the store doesnt carry your size
Its “we only sell this tshirt in unisex in your size” [many places only offer “womens” tees large and below]
Its having to buy two plane tickets for one person
Its having medical conditions overlooked because of your weight
It’s having fat people in media only be comic relief or the villain [or not featured at all]
Its people saying to your partner “you’re with *them*?”
It’s being found disgusting for sweating - even when you’re exercising
It’s being considered a fetish
It’s so much more than being bullied by words, but for some reason, people seem to think if they dont hear someone actively saying “fuck fat people they suck. I personally think fat people should die,” then nothing can be fatphobic.

[Content note: homophobia, suicide]
Born in 1956, Leslie Cheung was one of Hong Kong’s most famous stars during the golden era of Cantopop in the 1980s. He was dashing, stylish and fitted the public idea of a perfect heterosexual male lover. But in reality, he was in a long-term relationship with his childhood friend, Daffy Tong.
It was not an easy time to be gay. At that time, homosexuality was still viewed by many as an illness and abnormality in Hong Kong, especially after the emergence of the first local case of Aids in 1984. It was not until 1991 that adult gay sex was decriminalised in the territory.
“The LGBT movement in Hong Kong took off in the 1990s, when the community finally became visible to the public,” Travis Kong, an associate professor of sociology researching gay culture at The University of Hong Kong, told BBC Chinese. And it was at this point that Cheung became more daring in his work.

We need a movie about Fe del Mundo
NATIONAL SCIENTIST OF THE PHILIPPINES, FOUNDER OF THE FIRST FILIPINO PEDIATRIC SCHOOL AND THE FIRST WOMAN ACCEPTED TO HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T REALIZE SHE WAS A WOMAN UNTIL SHE GOT THERE AND FOUND HERSELF ASSIGNED TO AN ALL-MALE DORM
Tumblr media
And they couldn’t turn her away because 1) she was already there, she traveled so far, it wouldn’t have been right to send her back 2) her grades were, unsurprisingly, above and beyond and she was too good to turn away and 3) the scholarship was granted to her by the president of the Philippines, and y’all don’t say no to that without some international incident let’s be real
So she unwittingly became the first woman ever accepted into Harvard Med School (and possibly the first Asian ever enrolled? Though I haven’t confirmed this). She’s also since pioneered so many medical advancements in the Philippines that they can barely be counted, and she is by all accounts one of those amazing human beings that come rare in our lifetime. She was buried, and rightfully so, in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery).

New Porcelain Busts from Juliette Clovis
I am very pleased to present you the 4 last porcelain busts of Juliette Clovis : « Mechanitis Polymnia »,  « Millipora », « Black Baccara » and « Sternocera ». This last piece was made by the artist during a residency program at The Insect Museum of Nedde (France). More than 500 real beetles’ wings were necessary to make this stunning piece where the incredible colors of these wings strongly contrast with the pureness of the porcelain biscuit. You can check more pictures of each piece directly on Juliette’s website.
