When I was 23 I met a boy. He was freshly 18 and had an innocence to him that could never be quite captured. His eyes held so much pain for such few years of life and I swore while I held his face in my hands that I'd do anything to make that sorrow disappear. On bad days he was the overcast on the rainy days I kept my windows open to. He loomed in the house like a weight on my shoulders I promised to carry. His lack of drive for a life he didn't want I bore on my chest, as if I could somehow live for both of us. I cradled his head, his buzzing negative thoughts, against my chest and begged for a world he so deserved. A world where no amount of hurt could touch him. Where his reckless and wild youth was his to explore.  I feared the day when he would finally decide to exit this life. On good days he was the sun coming in at my breakfast nook. His smile was the stained glass that elicited an array of colors along my pale walls. He shimmered and I gazed at him like he was the reflection of the sun on water, unable to look away but in awe of such rare beauty. The way he danced with so much soul had me ache for an encore. Over and over again. And when we danced together our bodies aligned like constellations. The presence of a bad day still swarmed beside us like a black hole but it didn't dare take us. Not when our eyes locked and fingers tangled and foreheads touched. Not when I kissed him nice and slow. Not when he tentatively pulled back so I could see the blush on his cheeks. I kissed the color brighter and whispered devotion against skin like petals. I cherished good days as if they would be the last of our days. My boy was broken but I loved him. My boy was beautiful and I loved him. My boy was snatched from me and I still love him. My boy has someone new yet I still love him. Someone new, please keep him safe. The world isn't ready to lose such a delicacy like him.
