Pokeddexy Day 15: Psychic

for the psychic type, i decided to go back to gen 1 and create a design for starmie. like with ferrothorn, it was a challenge to design a character based on a mon with no face (and even ferrothorn at least has eyes!). because of that, i chose to obscure most of her face, and in combination with her layered dress, i think it makes her look very mystical and mysterious. and of course, i couldn’t resist making her sparkly :P

Pokeddexy Day 8: Flying

today's design is swellow! how slick is she? to be honest, i was pretty unfamiliar with gen 3 until recently (thanks, FlygonHG). i've still never played a gen 3 game, but for some reason, i can name all the gym leaders/elite four/champion and their entire teams! (...thanks, FlygonHG). but one of the other things i've learned from my youtube nuzlocke video addiction is the power of guts + facade swellow. she's beauty, she's grace, she's dealing 315 damage (with STAB) to your face. and her little suit and vest and tie means she looks quite stylish while doing so, too!

Day 24: Single Stage

seviper is such a cool-looking pokemon! i still remember the first time i found one in the tall grass and was like, omg what IS that thing, i bet it's super powerful and awesome... of course that was not the case, but despite the disappointment, i still think seviper is one of the coolest-looking pokemon out there. she's regal, she's deadly, and she's totally out to get you (especially if you are a zangoose)

Pokeddexy Day 31: Favorite Pokemon!

ok i'm gonna be real, it's so impossible to pick a definitive favorite pokemon – there are just too many great options. but it felt right for me to pick empoleon, my first-ever pokemon when i played platinum as a kid. between the amazing design and unique water/steel typing, empoleon is just so awesome. i knew when i was planning my design that i wanted to do something baroque-inspired to reflect her fancy aesthetic, and then she just kind of turned into a violinist, lol. it just felt right! and i wanted to do a back view to show off her cool trident-shaped hairpin, too.

even though i couldn't finish this challenge on time, i'm really proud of myself for pushing through anyway. i've been designing pokemon gijinkas for so long, but i never had the motivation to finish or post them. this challenge pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me experiment and discover new styles (tbh before this i barely ever touched my posca pens!). i'm really pleased with all the work i've made, and it was so fun to do this challenge alongside all of the amazingly talented artists who participated!

Pokeddexy Day 30: Shiny

i had trouble picking which shiny pokemon to design – changing the colors really impacts how recognizable the design is! – but i think spiritomb has to be one of the coolest shinies. i've mentioned before how it's challenging to design pokemon without faces, but spiritomb was challenging because it pretty much only has a face! i tried to make her look mischievous and kind of hypnotic... she is most certainly up to no good!

Pokeddexy Day 29: Scariest Pokemon

It was banished for its violence. It silently gazed upon the old world from the Distortion World.

for the scariest pokemon, i immediately knew i wanted to draw giratina! as a kid, giratina was possibly the coolest thing i had seen EVER (honestly, it still ranks pretty far up there). giratina's design is so graphic that i struggled to make her look creepy (it's those damn stripes!), but i think i finally succeeded with this design! she looks otherworldly and frightening, but also powerful and even beautiful. i've literally been trying to come up with something for giratina for months now, so it feels amazing to finally create something i'm satisfied with!

Pokeddexy Day 28: Cutest Pokemon

so remember when i said i was getting a bit too ambitious with these prompts and they were taking way too long to do? well i blame this piece! i was entranced by the idea of a preppy, retro piplup schoolboy, but once i sketched him, i thought, well, turtwig is pretty cute, too. and then once turtwig was there, i couldn't leave out chimchar! the sinnoh starters were just too adorable for me not to draw all of them on their walk to school!
