Mason finds them on the roof. Of course.

“The last thing I want to see you doing right now is smoking.”

“Yeah? What’s the first?”

“You can’t distract me that easily.”

“Since when?”

“Don’t be a shit.”

He sits close to her, like it’s their spot and they’re still normal and the routine hasn’t changed. Lane adjusts their baseball cap and tries to keep their eyes on the skyline. Tries not to feel the glittering charge of alien electricity in their blood.

“I’m doing fine, by the way.” They choose to be a shit, anyway.

Mason swallows. This is different. They don’t argue. Bicker. Whatever. Hell, a lot of the time they barely speak. Lane is a comforting quiet—a blanket and balm. She looks like if peace were a person and he doesn’t quite know what to do with her ire.

“Good,” he says. Soft, quiet. Lane cringes.

“Sorry,” they reply. They take a drag from their menthol cigarette. Mason tastes cold mint on the late summer air.

He holds his hand out and she takes it. The relief far outweighs the needle point shock of static humming just under her skin. Mason breathes.

“And you? Are you okay?” Quiet. Afraid.

He runs his thumb over their soft knuckles. It takes him too long to think but they wait, anyway.

“You don’t have to be ‘fine’. You don’t seem ‘fine’. I want-,” this is so new. Strange. Mason doesn’t quite know if he’s getting it right. He huffs and barrels on. “I want you to tell me what you’re thinking. How you feel.”

Gray smoke lifts on the night breeze, vanishing in the dark. Lane bites down on the filter. It’s not easy or comfortable or anything they’re used to when Mason is around. They don’t know if they want him to stop.

“I want you to talk to me all the time. Especially now, I guess.”

They both sigh—matching exasperation. They’re both trying to hold onto something they don’t know the shape of and the closer they get, the more they scramble. Lane wants to laugh. She wants to cry.

“Um. I think I don’t want to die.”

Mason plucks the cigarette from their lips and takes a drag. He doesn’t even gag at the mint anymore.

It tastes more like their mouth anyway.

“And?”

“And I don’t- I don’t know.”

William Friedkin, he tells this— No flowers, no trees or nothing. Just a few rocks and a bunch of combed sand. "Maybe these rocks are like planets or countries. Oh no. What if they're families? Or people?" And this garden is showing how spaced out everyone is from everybody else. How separated they are. How alone, right? And the only thing that's connecting 'em or touching 'em is this sand.
