I use @novlr but there aren't collaboration tools yet. We've raised with them that adding commenting for external users would be a good first step.
Cryptpad.fr has both a hosted and self-host option. The hosted option just limits you on storage space and the paid upgrades are pretty cheap. The interface is pretty good and you can share docs for collaboration.
ButterDocs is in an Early Bird Sale phase, and the features are really neat, but you need to pay to have more than 3 docs, and the non-EarlyBird price is really high, imo. It does have that not-overwhelming UI feel that GoogleDocs has as opposed to MS Word though.
OnlyOffice is supposed to have collab capabilities and basically looks like MS Office on web. I haven't been able to verify how well the collab works, as the person I shared a link with didn't see any of those tools.
FYI I just came across a thread on twitter which says that an author shared on google docs an explicit story with a friend for beta reading and google removed the file due to violation of TOS (apparently it has been updated where you are not allowed to share anything with sexual content). Not sure if it’s just this instance or if it’s going to become a widespread thing but if you guys write in google docs MAKE BACK UPS!!
(Instagram link to the screenshots)
Edit: also wanted to add that it seems that Microsoft word has the same language in their TOS so onedrive is not a safe alternative!

Hi yes hello its Pine again and I've been super into @camlannpod since it was announced but this week's episode specifically has done irreparable things to my heart and I think the fact that this is coming on this account can tell you why. Ella Watts took a character I've loved and studied for years and just. Modernized him in the perfect way.
Odysseus has always been a man trying to outrun his fate, but seeing the way that this was Camlann-ified was even more heartpunching than I imagined. He mourns. He holds guilt in his chest til he explodes with it. He is determined to do the thing that the original Odysseus wasn't able to: change his fate. And with Ariadne by his side, I think he can actually do that. Their stories are being woven together so wonderfully and it's making my little Classics major brain sing.
If you haven't listened to Camlann, I cannot recommend it more highly. If you're even slightly excited for the myth-bending nonsense I have planned for Forged Bonds, then you'll adore everything being done with Camlann

“fanon is so much better then canon” bestie, you literally took a complex character with personality flaws and turned him into a living stereotype.

It's not entirely the case that you don't own anything you buy digitally. It depends on where you bought it and in what format.
I buy music from Qobuz.
When I do, they offer me the option to download it in a variety of formats, including lossless FLAC. None of these formats have DRM. I could send the files to as many people at I wanted. I can play them on any audio player that supports the format.
Or burn them to a CD, if that's what you want.
What's important in a digital purchase is being able to download it outside whatever ecosystem you bought it in.

HOLD THE LINE!! KEEP PUSHING!!!!!

Why are people acting like another Trump administration couldn't possibly have any lasting consequences, when we're still dealing with the aftermath of the Reagan administration now.

@jv needs to hire me for marketing...
Just a quick little ad for @goblin-social
It's become my favorite Mastodon client, and any Tumblr refugees who miss the dark blue background and reblog chains should take a look.
I'm still considering sending out some invite codes to my instance to friends and acquaintances, so watch this space.

Audio Drama Sunday March 24, 2024
Take two on this!
@worldgonewrongpod This was such a fun first episode! What a clever idea to do a casual chat show in a world with supernatural problems. The chat and jokes between the hosts felt so natural too, will definitely be tuning in for future episodes.
@breakerwhiskey Episodes 31-45. The slow reveal of Whiskey's backstory and Birdie's conversations is so engaging, and Birdie's communication via morse code is such a clever choice both for the story and for production. Introducing a character who doesn't speak to an audio drama is such a bold writing challenge, and interesting way to keep the cast limited while the world expands.
Alice Isn't Dead - I'm only one episode away from ending season 2, and I really enjoy how the show's horror and plot develops in a slow burn. Keisha putting things together and realizing that she's alive because there's a part for her to play in the war with the Thistle Men was so impactful.
I've also been listening to the audiobook of Mara Wilson's lovely memoir, so that's been taking up a lot of my listening time this week!

...This is just in the nature of a PSA for anyone interested in rail travel (in Europe and beyond), for pleasure or just to get around.
There are some online resources that are nothing to do with giant corporations, but that punch way above their weight in what they offer you... specifically because they're the day-to-day expression of one person's passion for a topic that continually engages them. The Man in Seat 61 website is one of these.
If you're interested in rail even in a general way, you ought to know about Seat 61: because what Mark Smith doesn't know about the subject is probably minor enough to not need knowing. His work's as valuable for newbie rail travelers as for those of us who've been doing this kind of travel for a while. (For example, just found out via Seat 61 that a trip that I've often done with @petermorwood for business purposes, the Zurich to Munich run, is now nearly an hour shorter than it was when we last did it. Yay!)
So if you're planning a trip*, or just interested in seeing how to get around in Europe (and various other continents as well), check out The Man in Seat 61.
*Mark's especially strong on the subject of reduced-rate rail passes, so don't miss out on the pages about those.
