This takes place in my AU, The Protectors of Joy, where the critters are chosen by The Angel to protect lands from The Hand of Chaos and his minions. And I guess the main ship is DogDay x CatNap. I do not know when exactly they share a kiss, but this scene will happen.

Personality

CatNap, as mentioned in the ref, is very quiet. He almost never talks or socializes with anyone. He is also introverted and is often seen alone, hanging around in trees or in the shade. But even though he likes to be alone, he enjoys hanging out with his friends more often. He’s even more talkative and social to them, especially DogDay (his first friend). But around strangers, he is often the quiet guy, only talking after someone starts the conversation. When he is around DogDay, however, he is not afraid to show PDA (public display of affection) to him. He rubs on DogDay like a cat, shares food with him, and even allows himself to get head pets from DogDay. He acts like this around DogDay (and only DogDay) because of his crush on him and also because DogDay is his best friend. He is also pretty overprotective of DogDay and can get jealous, but not too much. Overall, CatNap is a chill guy… most of the time.

Other facts:

-CatNap has many catlike mannerisms. Not only does he meow, trill, and purr, he can land on his feet (and hands), sit and sleep anywhere he fits (like a box), and even chatter.

These mannerisms also include sitting on DogDay’s lap (and not caring if anyone’s looking), cat body language, and that need to scratch his claws on something.

-CatNap rarely breathes out his red gas scent, but he does end up breathing it out when he has ill intentions, feels negative emotions (including stress), or as a last resort when lavender gas is not helping his friends sleep. 

Him being requested to breathe the red gas instead of lavender for sleep is very rare, especially since inhaling too much can cause hallucinations and nightmares.

-CatNap, like any cat, has a good sense of smell. He can smell who touched who.

The boys as young adults (20 years old) in the TPoJ AU. I’ll admit, I wanted to color Kickin’s “hair” red, but as I prepared coloring him, I studied many different chicken breeds and decided to stick to him with that “hair.” Because there is a thing called Polish Chickens and decided to base his species on them.

Bubba’s design took me a while to decide. I was wondering if I should give him tusks. And I ended up giving him tusks because male elephants should have them.

Hey, y'all! I have gotten the results of my first poll that I made for naming this AU and have decided to call it "The Protectors of Joy AU" or TPoJ AU. For that, I thank y'all for helping me decide the name for this SC AU!

After that, I need help deciding. Should I make the Smiling Critters, in their Protector forms, a magical warrior (magical girl and magical boy) group? Or just give them fancy markings to show them using their magical power?

I was reading your posts about how Catnap’s two breaths work and it just gave me the image of him walking through the neighborhood, breathing out lavender scent and having it spread throughout, in the same way Sand Man’s sand does in Rise of the Guardians.

He could do the same with the poppy scent, but it’s a last resort for a reason.

Yep! Honestly, this is what CatNap would usually do.

CatNap—as the critter representing the moon, night, and sleep—begins walking around at sunset. But as bedtime approaches, he routinely checks around his friends' houses to see if they are in need for a breath of lavender scent. Most of the time, the critters don't need CatNap's lavender breath and only need it when something is keeping his friends awake, like feeling too anxious to sleep.

Yeah, CatNap is a walking aromatherapy. Then again, all of the critters are that.

DogDay Headcanons & TPoJ AU info

DOGDAY IS DONE YAY! And now, headcanon and AU info time!

A little info before looking at the headcanon and AU info below:

The Smiling Critters are young adults in this AU. This is DogDay as a young adult (20 years old). Art of him in his younger years will appear later in the future.

The Protectors of Joy AU will be focused primarily in the cartoon universe, with a few elements from the game.

Because the AU is still in the works, some of these planned infos/headcanons will change.

There will be ships involved, especially CatNap x DogDay.

And that’s it for now! Next would probably be Bubba.

DogDay’s breed is the American cocker spaniel. Because of that, his temperament is like that of the American cocker spaniel.

DogDay was such a sociable and friendly little puppy. He wanted to play with other kids so much and was loved by the adults just for being so sweet. He was such a bright ray of sunshine, it gave him seven friends!

His lovable personality remained even when he got older. So much so he pretty much became a well-known boy at his high school. Both the boys and girls loved his happy-go-lucky, respectful, and compassionate self. Many girls wanted to date him because of that.

DogDay never let his popularity get to his head though. Nor was he interested in dating the girls in his high school. If anything, he mostly kept in touch with a childhood friend, a certain purple cat (CatNap. It’s CatNap). And safe to say, he was feeling something for him. And it confused him.

Because DogDay and CatNap’s families always meet up at the park to hang out almost every Saturday, DogDay and CatNap get the chance to hang out, talk about their day, and more.

DogDay is demisexual, but he is questioning himself if he likes men or women. Though, he has a feeling he likes both. But he has a preference for men.

DogDay wanted to move out when he turned 18. Explore and find a home that is right for him. It was such a coincidence when he had strange dreams telling him to find that dream home and bring “the moon” (CatNap) with him.

Ever since he moved into this new land called “The Land of Joy” with CatNap, he felt much happier and freer. The land had open fields, a beach nearby, and more. His new house was small, but had the most comfortable couch. To him, he felt like the place wanted him to have fun, be comfortable, and be happy. 

He found the sun pendant on the table next to the couch. And ever since then, he cherished wearing it as it reminded him of his childhood days when he wore a golden sun necklace.

When the other six critters arrived to The Land of Joy, they all still saw DogDay as a leader. That surprised DogDay, as he thought this might have changed throughout those years. But looks like things haven’t changed much!

What he didn’t know is that he would also become a Protector once he turned 20. Because he wears the sun pendant around his neck and represents it well, he is the one who will lead his friend group into battle. DogDay and his friends make up “The Protectors of Joy,” a group of warriors chosen to fight against this corrupted being known as “The Hand of Chaos” and anyone who follows him. While fighting to protect, they also express their gifts as a way to bring positivity, fun, and pretty much, happiness.

DogDay is dense. He has feelings for CatNap, but he is always like:

“He probably just views me as his best friend.”

“CatNap never really notices me.”

“He just probably likes me because we hang out a lot.”

And this often frustrates (but amuses) the other critters. CatNap apparently is asleep during those times. 

DogDay, ever since he turned 20, has the power to manipulate light, especially sunlight while also being able to breathe out vanilla scent.

So, y’all know I keep saying AU for almost all of my Smiling Critter headcanons and art, but ain’t got a name for it? Well, I did have a name planned, but I keep changing it to other names.

Context and poll below

The Smiling Critters AU I planned is about a cartoonish world protected by a being called “The Angel.” But because the world was tainted with so much negativity, despair, and pain thanks to a being known as “The Hand of Chaos,” the Angel kept watch for any possible critter that can represent a certain aspect of life. The critter must represent their aspect so well, the critter’s gift brings more positivity, healing, happiness, and hope to everyone around them. And for that, when the critter’s teen years finally end at the age of 20, they are chosen to become a protector of some kind and they wear a pendant to show what they represent. And those who wear the sun pendant are deemed leader of their group, while those who wear the moon pendant serves to be a protector of the entire group alongside the leader. Those who wear a pendant will fight against those who have been fooled and corrupted by The Hand of Chaos and protect their homeland created by The Angel known as “The Land of Joy.” The Land of Joy was created as a way to protect the lands beyond from The Hand of Chaos, pretty much being the shield.

Of course, being heroes or “The Protectors of Joy” is not easy and this AU will include angst.

I am unsure if I wanna go the usual magical warrior (think magical girls/mahou shoujo) or just superpowered toon animals with fancy glowing markings. Might do another poll on that.

I was thinking of calling it The Protectors of Joy AU, but also think Embodiment AU is also good. But I am thinking The Protectors of Joy or TSC:TPoJ AU is better.

The Smiling Critters - CatNap Headcanons & AU info

Heyyy! I have drawn CatNap in my style/AU! I suck at poses still. And following below is some CatNap headcanons/AU info.

CatNap and DogDay lived pretty far away from each other when they were young.

CatNap is the quiet and reserved type and rarely talks. But when someone asks or tells him to talk, he talks. He talks a little more when DogDay is with him. He is only more talkative when he’s alone. Example:

🌸 CraftyCorn 🌸: Hey, CatNap! What do you think of my lavender painting?

🌙 CatNap 🌙: *thumbs up* Good.

☀️ DogDay ☀️: Hey, CatNap! How are you doing?

🌙 CatNap 🌙: *tiredly, but still smiling* I’m doing alright, DogDay? And you?

CatNap was DogDay’s very first friend. They met in elementary school. CatNap was a loner and many kids did not want to hang out with him because he was “too creepy.” DogDay was the one who insisted that he will be CatNap’s first friend. Ever since then, the dog and cat have been inseparable.

CatNap and DogDay kept in touch when they were in high school. Unfortunately, the two were in separate high schools, but they never stopped talking to each other. It’s mostly through letters as they did not have phones at the time. 

CatNap slowly began to develop feelings for DogDay throughout his high school years. He gave the dog small hints and signs, but DogDay was so oblivious and dense.

CatNap left with DogDay to their new homes because not only did DogDay request he come with him, but CatNap also felt like he was ready to move out and be on his own. Not to mention weird dreams he had of a voice telling him to go with DogDay.

When DogDay and CatNap went to the mysterious land, they found their new homes. And their new pendents.

After he walked into the mysterious land, CatNap was secretly happy that his new house and DogDay’s new house are close to each other. And also the fact that his house is a cat tree and he is allowed to scratch on it.

Ever since he moved into his new house, he spent most of the day, sleeping in his new comfortable bed.

Every time CatNap visits each one of his friends’ homes and sees where they sleep, he feels tempted to save up all of his money and buy every single one of them a comfortable bed or something that can be like a bed.

CatNap, just like what his bio says, enjoys watching his friends sleep. He makes sure everyone has a good night’s rest. That includes making sure they have a nightmare-free sleep, and as he stays up, he keeps watch over his friends. Protecting them through the night. And when dawn breaks, he turns in for the day.

He loves to knead DogDay’s belly. His fur is so soft and smells of vanilla, he cannot resist making biscuits.

CatNap acts like a cat a lot. He even loafs, sleeps in such strange (yet cute) positions, and even has cat body language (slow blinking at DogDay, tail up to show he’s happy/friendly, dilating white pupils once he spots a perfect target to pounce on). And he can land on his feet.

CatNap likes to sit and sleep in boxes, sit in anything he can fit in, and pretty much sit where he wants. Why? Because he wants to and it’s comfortable.

He even said one time, “If I fits, I sits.”

One time, Bobby BearHug just hugged DogDay while CatNap was nearby. After Bobby let him go and left, CatNap just quietly went to DogDay and rubbed himself against the dog’s side like how a cat rubs itself on things, mixing his lavender scent into DogDay’s vanilla scent.

Add onto the fact that CatNap can smell who hugged/touched who. PickyPiggy is a bit of a tough one since she eats many different foods, even peppermint candies and vanilla dessert. 

Ever since CatNap walked into the land that will soon become his new home and neighborhood, he has been given two breath abilities. One is lavender, but the red gas came as a last resort if someone keeps staying up late, but it also comes out if he has ill intent, negative emotions, or is under stress. Following that is magical powers, since he was chosen to represent the Moon and all of its aspects (Night, Sleep, Dreams, and Darkness).

Something that I've noticed ever since the Smiling Critters were introduced is that they can so easily be paired off into complementary duos, ones that are specifically designed to teach children fundamental lessons about life and self-care from two different angles. It's really interesting to me.

Like obviously you have Dogday and Catnap, with their sun/moon, dog/cat dichotomy, that stress how important it is to have fun and get things done during the day, but also that it's important to wind down, relax, and get a good night's sleep.

Bubba Bubbaphant and Craftycorn were introduced as a duo in the Smiling Critter show's intro, and their dichotomy is quite obvious. They are basically the right and left sides of the brain personified. Bubba is the left side of the brain, logical, analytical, focused on math and science. Craftycorn is the right side of the brain, creative and imaginative, focused on the arts and self-expression. They represent learning and academia in all its forms, the different ways people engage with and understand the world.

Hoppy Hopscotch and Kickin' Chicken form the sportsmanship duo. They are both portrayed as enjoying sports and the outdoors, but in different ways that highlight the different ways sports can be played and enjoyed and also what it entails to be successful at them. Hoppy Hopscotch may be loud and impatient, but she is also a team player, shown in her willingness to slow down her fast pace to make sure none of her friends are left behind. Kickin' Chicken, on the other hand, is laid-back, relaxed, and chill, the described "cool kid" of the group, but he's also described as having a ton of perseverance, more of a "slow and steady wins the race" type of person.

This leaves Bobby Bearhug and Picky Piggy as the last pair. Fittingly, these two are all about how to meet the fundamental needs of yourself and others. Bobby teaches children how to nourish themselves emotionally through showing and receiving care from others, while Picky teaches them how good food is important to nourish the body and soul. Depriving oneself of either of these things only makes oneself and therefore everyone around one miserable, because those fundamental needs are no longer being met.

Like fr, this is some pretty genius marketing right here. You have enough characters that every kid will have their favorite, but not so many that any would get lost in the shuffle, because the lessons each one of them would teach would be integral to the group as a whole. It really makes me that much sadder we saw basically nothing of the Smiling Critters during the game itself, because Mob Games struck gold with this concept, only to ultimately do nothing with it. :/

But I guess that's what fandom is for, eh?

What is your headcanon for age of critters? I know they are all the same age, but what exacly?

If you’re asking about the cartoon versions of the Critters, then I can say that at first, I thought they were just short-sized kidults (adults that act childish). As for their exact ages, my headcanon ages for them would be within the young adult age range, 18-21 years old at best. I viewed them in the same way I viewed Cuphead and Mugman (game version), and maybe even Bendy; short young adults that act childish and silly.

That headcanon was before the whole age debate thing. After the whole age thing began, I just went with silly, ageless goobers. As for my headcanon about the Smiling Critters being young adults, that became canon for an AU I’m making.

As for the BBIs: I headcanon the BBI Critters, by the time of Poppy Playtime: Chapter 3, to be at the age of, maybe around twenty. I’m honestly not too big on the Poppy Playtime lore, but from what I remembered, the experiments technically didn’t die and possess the toys. They were turned into toys. So, I guess throughout those ten years, they aged and grew like humans.
