Modern AU:

Merlin and Arthur are rivals. Or rather, Merlin thinks they are. They are in the same friend group and they bicker a lot.

Arthur is actually trying to flirt with him, but he's really bad at it. It's very obvious though and their friends pity him for his constantly failing attempts.

Merlin, unfortunately, is oblivious to anything mildly suggestive, because he's convinced Arthur is just an arse.

Because y’all, no matter how uncoordinated and really clumsy we see of him sometimes, Merlin never wavers in his speech; never doubts what he wants to say and says it no matter the consequences.

But here? Oh God. He can't even fucking begin to process the fact that he ushered Uther to death. He can't help but break over how after everything he did to keep Arthur's heart from breaking, he was made the instrument of tearing Arthur apart.

And he can't help but try to vocalise any of his agony out loud, but stutters trying to say I should have healed him. I should have saved him. I should have been the one to show you the goodness of magic. I should have —

“I wish that there was something more that I could have done.”

Merlin: oh shit, Arthur, you have to help me.

Arthur: *annoyed and tired* Merlin, I've worked my fourth 12hour shift this week, I can't -

Merlin: Please!!! She broke up with me and said no one would ever want me. I've been telling her I was getting married. Can you pretend to like - be on a trip with me, like, preparing for my wedding?

Arthur: *instantly awake* ok, I've got us covered

Three hours later, Merlin is frozen at the table, while Arthur is having a long thorough conversation about wedding receptions and invite plans and shit with Merlin' ex. Merlin has never seen Arthur this excited in months.

Ex: so, you're like, his wedding planner?

Arthur: *no hesitation* fiancé

Merlin: *coughs* (that's not what I asked of you!!!)

Ex: *surprised* then you should know he hates these fruit cakes

Arthur: they are not for him, sweety. My father is allergic to them and I need him savely tugged away somewhere so he won't ruin the wedding. *Mutters: I hope the hospital is far away*

Ex: oh

Merlin: *whispering* you're overselling it

Arthur: *ignoring him* I've had a friend of mine help me with the actual food arrangements. Merlin is such a picky eater, so we had to make sure- ....

Much, much later:

Merlin: You've talked so much about that wedding, I'm half convinced it's actually happening

Arthur: I'll pick you up on Wednesday to get suits. You should be free at 7

Merlin: Arthur... This was a one time thing -

Arthur: and let her call you a liar? Not on my watch!

I wanna see more of Merlin being an absolute mama’s boy

But specifically about his magic and in the same way that Percy Jackson is protective over Sally.

And I want Merlin to accidentally make his mother a diety, or just worshipped in some capacity cos the druids took his “my mum deserves the world” very seriously.

Druids: You are Magic. You are the son of the sea and sky, raised by the old ways.

Merlin: The old ways didn’t raise shit. The old ways gave me a spiteful cryptic basement lizard and told me to figure it out. Hunith, my mother, she’s the one you can thank for the Emrys stuff and you better thank her a lot ‘cos I was a handful as a kid.

Druids: …

Druids: Bet.

Merlin: That’s probably fine, right?

Lancelot: You’re asking me? You’re apparently magic itself, divinity incarnate, and you’re asking me?!

Merlin: …It’s probably fine.

Then a little while later a letter arrives in Camelot:

My dearest son, Merlin,

Care to explain why I have close to a hundred Druids and magic users lining up at my door to “Thank me as The Great Emrys instructed”? They’re calling me the mother of magic and asking where the best place to leave offerings is. I’ve told them to distribute most things to the village, but I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with any of these enchantments or magical artefacts.

AU where Arthur finds out about the prophecy and pieces together that "his closest ally Emrys" must be Merlin because who else would it be, but incorrectly assumes that Merlin doesn't know and therefore has never practiced magic before.

Even better if he finds out early season 1 so He's just so devastated the entire time and he's just like "I can't believe this, this prophecy is going to turn my best friend into a sorcerer, and it's all my fault for being the once and future king" and Merlin's in the back just murdering a sidhe
