Out of all the fanfiction tropes that i can pick my bone at, i do have to say the elevator trope pisses me off really badly because it seems to romanticize and sanitize something extremely traumatizing.

To put it in perspective, here’s how someone online put it:

You’re trapped in a small metal box, suspended by cables that could fail at any moment, unable to know when rescue is coming or if its coming at all. You have no idea whats happening around you, and if you’re in a glass elevator, you may feel like you’ve been condemned to hell and are lookkng up helplessly at heaven. If there’s someone else in there with you, if you two are strangers, you have no clue what they could do to you, and if you end up trapped for a long time, a berserker button could be pushed. If you do know them, that could be a bit calming, but that doesn’t change the fact that both of you will end up traumatized from the encounter

Yet you guys think it’s gonna be like heaven on the seventh floor. You downplay how traumatic it is and laugh at victoms, you romanticize it to unrealistic degrees, to the point my 37 YEAR OLD ART TEACHER DIDNT KNOW PEOPLE ACTUALLY GOT TRAPPED IN ELEVATORS. 37 years, and it took her witnessing me get horrific flashbacks and almost throwing up in class to get the gist that getting trapped in an elevator is bad.

EDIT: returning to this post to say i once found a webpage of “funny ways to annoy people in an elevator” and one of them just flat out made fun of people with PTSD
