A vary rare hunting cleaver, Germany 1675 - 1676, length 60 cm.
Straight, double-edged, broad blade and round tip, all engraved in etching with a cyclic calendar (ephemeris) that allows the dates of movable birthdays in any year from 1676 to 1690 to be specified, as well as the reigning zodiac sign; engraved with the legend "ALSO STEHT ES IN DER WELT"(That's how things are in this world) written in small letters on one side at the base, on the other side "Fec. Ioh. Ad. Ehinger". A mask is engraved at the tip on both sides, between the months the zodiac signs are beautifully engraved. Areas of corrosion on the surface. Iron hilt with slightly upward curved quillons, ends shaped as a hound's head in the round; the centre of crossguard carved with floral motifs. The pommel deeply carved with a grotesque mask. Deer horn grip. Interesting cleaver combining mystical and religious fragments in the art of hunting.

“The god thou serv’st is thine own appetite…”

Artist’s Notes: Joshua’s hand casts an “anatomically accurate” heart-shaped hole in Caesar’s chest, and the end of the cigarette is also in the shape of a heart. I gave Joshua a tear mole at the corner of his eye, as they commonly foreshadow a life of pain and broken relationships. The ivy growing around the damaged statue of Christ symbolize both a form of redemption or transformation in the wasteland, but also simultaneously the act of clinging to the dead- which I feel fits both Joshua and Caesar’s characters in different ways.
The second illustration is a little rougher than the first one, mainly because I was writing an essay on Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus while drawing on the side. This was also where I got the quote above.

1,600-year-old lead curse tablet in the Museo Archeologico Civico di Bologna, of unknown provenance. — "The first known surviving curse directed at a Roman senator. ... The text is written mainly in Latin with Greek invocations ... 'Crush, kill Fistus the senator,' part of the curse reads, 'May Fistus dilute, languish, sink and may all his limbs dissolve …' " — Image a composite of photo and drawing found at The History Blog
