I've always wondered a lot about the shunning grounds.
The thing is, no matter how much furr, feathers, teeth and horns a newborn baby might have, there is absolutely no way they could survive alone down there.
Babies do not survive left alone in a room if unattended for too long. The royals of Leyndell did not just chuck infants into the sewers and then go about their days deluding themselves about those babies' survival.
If the goal was to not have those children die, they couldn't be put down there for quite a while! And even after that, when they were grown enough (whenever one can deem a child ready for life in a sewer) they had to have been tended to regularly, if nothing else to be fed and watered at least somewhat!
Even if we assume omen have more animal qualities then just extraneous body parts, baby mammals in general are not equipped for survival without assistance.
The omens in game have broken chains they drag around, at some point they must have been attached to something, no?
What I'm getting at is, I don't think the idea that the omen were left to roam the shunning grounds unattended and basically exclusively fending for themselves is believable. The point of the shunning grounds is for royal omen babies to be spared almost certain death! What would be the point to just send them to die somewhere else? That said, I do think omens died abundantly in there, but I don't think that was the point of the place, the point of it was to keep them away from society, the point is to be a prison! A sqallid, filthy, inhumane, disgusting prison, but still a prison.
My thought is it's much more likely the omen were kept in cells or group holdings of some kind, and were cared for (at least minimally) by attendants sworn to secrecy. although how secret a thing the shunning grounds was is debatable if you ask me
To me, the broken chains and 'free' unattended roaming feel like a much more recent development brought about by the Shattering and consequent deterioration of capital infrastructure.
So yeah, I think omen know how to speak, know what their situation is, have know the surface at least in their earliest years, hidden away somewhere in their families' houses.
Just like how I imagine it happened to Mohg and Morgott, someone must have cared along the way. Yes, it wasn't enough, maybe it wasn't even very much at all, but it did happen and it was real.

Elden Ring incest thoughts below:
Speaking of the incest in Elden Ring, it does, frankly, intrigue me that even fans who claim to enjoy incestuous ships read the canon pairings of half-siblings as a projection of moral degradation (or absense of morals altogether) of whatever character they want to malign.
Mohg’s one-sided obsession with Miquella proves he is evil and not to be pitied. Or, (the more likely discourse nowadays) Miquella is forcing Radahn and/or Mohg into a relationship they otherwise wouldn’t want, which means he is evil. Mohg couldn’t have earnestly loved Miquella- he was charmed the whole time! Same for Radahn. Etc etc.
I just find it interesting that so many people seem to miss the implied themes of both Mohg/Miquella and Miquella/Radahn for the sake of moralizing the incest to either condemn or absolve one character or another. All that to say, Miquella and Mohg are in some ways foils of one another. Both men want to usurp the Golden Order and insert their own God/Order in its place. Both men recognize the failures and evils of the present Order- Mohg was its victim and Miquella was a kind person who demonstrably cared for the people the Order failed and excluded. But both of them are following Marika’s footsteps. Both of them are recreating the same oppressive system just slightly different. That’s what the incestuous Elden Lord spouses represent! They literally cannot break out of the old ways, so how can they hope to make a better world anew?
Mohg was never going to succeed in making a new Order. Not because he was ugly or evil or disgusting, but because he was misguided- because he envisioned an Order where he could dictate the hierarchy of society. Likewise Miquella was never going to succeed because he was literally becoming Marika 2.0 in real time!

I just finished watching Akasharose’s four-part boss review of Elden Ring and I’m actually genuinely considering writing a deranged love letter fix-it fic for Miquella (ft the Mohgwyn Dynasty)— I. I may be insane. possibly.
I just wuv him…. he got me…

HEART STOLEN
(I was “normal” about him BEFORE the DLC, so much so I actually literally cried when it turned out we were forced to kill him. Do I have a problem?? yes)

cashing in on my one discourse post a month limit to say that I think for most people, the limits they have on what is depicted in official works vs what is portrayed in fandom content are two completely different metrics and I don't see really anyone acknowledge that

Baby Stannis gently nursing an injured bird back to health when no one else would and naming her Proudwing until the bird loved him and perched on his shoulder and followed him around until he abandoned the her because Robert told him it was gay to have an animal friend who couldn’t do violence is still so evocative to me like I’m genuinely so so sad thinking about it

“Where’d the tarnished go?”
Those tarnished are a slippery sort and can hide in all sorts of places.
I saw a very funny image of a vampire himbo with a smaller guy in his pecs years ago and I decided to do it with Mohg.

i can only imagine how puffy Morgott's tail gets when it's finally washed and de-matted
not puffy enough to hide all the horns and id imagine not puffy enough to be 'like a cloud', but still enough that it's very soft and he'd be very confused as to why his tarnished constantly wants to pet it
....they get smacked around by it more often than not now in response to all that touch
but fr though just to de-mat that thing, you'd have to use some sort of elden ring equivalent to an equigroomer fur brush
