I think I’d never been hit by representation as hard as I was today. I am legitimately bawling at work because of the Sylvan Library from the “Nuestra Magia” Secret Lair. Seeing my heritage in an mtg card…I could have never imagined it would impact me so much. I can’t stop crying as I write this. We see plenty of Central and South American representation in things like Coco, Encanto, and MTG’s Ixalan…but to see something so undeniably, and non-popculture, connecting to my roots is something I simply never expected. Each piece of vegetation there is something I NEVER expected to see in my favorite game, never mind the taíno and their symbols. It is perfect. I wrote the artist to thank her personally, but big high fives to those who made this possible.

I will pass along the kind words. I’m so happy to hear about (and share) the impact this had on you. Thanks for writing in.

These magic: the gathering ads I see are so funny. Stop playing lo-fi music in the background. This isn’t the new fad, it’s not “like a puzzle”. You know, ever noticed that despite Commander being the most popular format right now, they still only market Standard and Arena? It makes sense. Imagine a Commander inspired ad by wizards. Wanna spend an hour and a half in a slugfest between a guy who’s sole purpose is to make sure nobody casts spells, a guy who’s entire deck is dedicated to making 1/1 goblin tokens, and a guy who’s deck is actually a complicated metaphor for the downfall of the storytelling of mtg caused by capitalism? Well? Wanna lose to a deck that at minimum costs $500? Wanna lose to one that costs 20? Wanna meet the smelliest man you’ve ever met who’s printed out an entire proxy deck of his most oversexualized anime waifus as the cards? Wanna have a 75% loss rate unless you pull out the cheesiest decks possible in which case you have a 0% win rate on account of nobody playing you? This is commander. This is EDH. And I fucking love it. I lock eyes with the men of war who are disgusted with themselves when they enjoy the bloodlust of combat, and I understand completely.
