Alright, I know everyone is talking about how SJM doesn't do any rep and that stans themselves retcon the characters in order to seem 'exclusive'. But why is almost no one talking about how they always choose characters, who are heavily sidelined, mistreated, used as a tool or straight out barbaric as their pocs? Stans are always fighting within themselves whether the Illyrians, Lysandra, Amren, Manon and Fenrys can be seen as pocs, ignoring that they all check out one of the mentioned criteria

i think it does get talked about fairly often in anti circles ( @longsightmyth mentioned it just the other day) but yo it’s important to keep talking about it regardless: hopefully stans who stalk our tags will see the posts and realize exactly what they’re fighting for. it baffles me that the stans can be so fucking oblivious about what they’re arguing in terms of representation. the Illyrians, i think, are one of the most blatant examples, bc this is a violent society that partakes in FGM and is so uncontrollable that the bat boys don’t even want to try to stop them from continuing with what they’re doing. it’s one major thing that worries me about the ness///ian novel, bc riceman and co literally sent Nesta to the Illyrian camps to be taught a lesson in humility and obedience (bc obv Nesta needs to be terrified to overcome her PTSD and realize that she was wrong all along about the inner circlejerk and fae in general). it’s appalling.

It looks very creepy, especially when i think he also is like 300yo. A very old man interested in a 18yo who looks like a child but with big boobs (?)

It’s super creepy. Like, if there’s any doubt about whether a person is of an appropriate age for me, I’m instantly consciously drawing a line. The fact that Sarah treats this as acceptable and romantic is horrifying. I don’t give a flying fuck how old Lorcan looks. Everyone knows he’s much, much older than Elide, and he is also fully aware that she’s a very young human. No matter how you want to spin this, Lorcan actively pursues a barely legal human who is in no way his social, physiological, or psychological equal. She’s barely more than a child and literally still developing mentally. That isn’t someone that a 30yo should be allowed to date, much less a 300+ yo.

I find it super ironic that Maas preaches about sex positivity and then goes and includes the detail about Nesta losing her “virginity,” which as someone who calls themself sex positive she’d know there is no such thing as virginity. THEN there being blood on the sheets—when hymen’s can’t have a blood supply so the blood had to have came from her being injured in the act of sex as bleeding the first time you have sex is usually a sign of sexual trauma

Fuck you if you defend this notion that Maas is sex positive when it’s very clear her sex “representation” is all about perpetuating an extreme form of sexual violence and stigma that directly harms girls/women

I'd like to ask what kind of problem SJM has dark hair or dark eyes? I've seen the same kind of thing in Cassandra Clare's books. Literally no main character is dark haired and dark eyed. If they are, they got "black eyes". Is there something wrong with dark eyes? As a PoC I'm very disappointed because I'd like to see some rep for my country :(

White authors gonna white. Many of them are allergic to the combination of dark eyes and dark hair on one character, and if the rare character does appear with both, they’re nowhere near as romanticized as the blonde-haired blue-eyed ones. In SJ/M’s case, there’s actually a pattern of dark-haired, dark-eyed characters specifically being described as plain or ugly or evil (ie A/mren, Hasar, King of Hibern) whereas literally everyone else is drop-dead gorgeous. Qwhite interesting. SJ/M’s books are not the place to look if you want to find rep for your country :/.

here have 10 pieces of writing advice that have stuck with me over the years

every character’s first line should be an introduction to who they are as a person

even if you only wrote one sentence on a really bad day, that’s still one sentence more than you had yesterday

exercise restraint when using swear words and extra punctuation in order for them to pack a punch when you do use them

if your characters have to kiss to show they’re in love, then they’re not in love

make every scene interesting (or make every scene your favorite scene), otherwise your readers will be just as bored as you

if you’re stuck on a scene, delete the last line you wrote and go in a different direction, or leave in brackets as placeholders

don’t compare your first draft to published books that could be anywhere from 3rd to 103rd drafts

i promise you the story you want to tell can fit into 100k words or less

sometimes the book isn’t working because it’s not ready to be written or you’re not ready to write it yet; let it marinate for a bit so the idea can develop as you become a better writer

a story written in chronological order takes a lot more discipline and is usually easier to understand than a story written with flashbacks

Honestly, the way the SJM fandom treats the BLM movement is gross.

Here are some examples:

I hate when SJM stans post fanart of Nehemia and talk about the Black Lives Matter in the same post. They don't realize that the Nehemia (a black woman) dying to further the development and help Celaena (a white woman) is not what Black Lives Matter is about. In fact, it's like almost the opposite. Yes, Nehemia is a black woman. But she got brutally killed in the second book for the sake of a white person. I mean I hopefully don't have to explain why this is not good. Like why are people forgetting that? She was not treated well. Just like every poc/lgbtq+ character in SJM books.

I honestly think she got it the worst. Like she was the only poc/lgbt that got actually killed except for Sorcha (I think she was a poc). Like what the fuck?

SJM stans are as tone-deaf and ignorant as SJM herself.
