Rembrandt lighting, or Chiaroscuro effect, is a lighting technique used to create a stark contrast between dark and light in an image. While usually used for dramatic effect, it can also have a deeper meaning for characters portrayed in this lighting. When a character is shown with a half-lit face, it can symbolize moral ambiguity, or an internal struggle between ones own good and bad sides.
