Sketching a deep bow at the waist in the manner he'd been taught so many moons ago, gaze downcast respectfully, Starkey waited for her acknowledgement before raising curious eyes to meet hers. "Lady Marian, I presume?" Giving the young woman the faintest hint of a smile, he gestured toward the retreating back of his captain with a nod. "My name is James Starkey, First Mate of the Jolly Roger. It is a genuine pleasure to make your acquaintance, my lady."
Falling short in her stride, gaze leaving the man she had been after to the one currently standing in front of her and lips curving upwards in a smile. His eyes blue, much like the sea she supposed, though she had never had the luxury of seeing it .. and for the breath of a moment Marian felt a clutch at her heart, the very air seeming to shimmer around them.
Cheeks flushed pink at her lack of composure as she hurried to gain some semblance of self-control once more, cheeks flushing the slightest shade of pink as she nodded, holding her hand out as propriety demanded. “Marian. Of Knighton.” She couldn’t help the small smile that teased at her lips, even the accompanying gesture towards one of the banes of her very existence not enough to dampen her mood.
“First mate?” Brows furrowed as she searched her mind for everything she knew about such a term, realization dawning on her face. The man was a pirate, much like the one who had taken up residence in the castle , but he was somehow gentler ... a lot more refined at the least. “Pleased to meet you Mr. James Starkey, first mate of The Jolly Roger ... “ The lilt of a tease was in her voice, as she smiled, gesturing to the retreating back of his captain with a nod of her hand. “As for that one ... I’d say he’s rather become a first mate, as well.”
A deep shade of red blossomed over both cheeks as she realized what she had said (to a completely stranger no less) and it was with a hurried request that Marian took the man’s arm, prompting him to walk with her. If James was a guest of the pirate’s, and in turn of the sheriff’s, perhaps there was someway of using him in the freeing of her father. And, in all fairness, he wasn’t entirely hard to look at.
“Tell me, Mr. Starkey .. are pirates really as full of tales as they say? Or are most simply charming gentlemen such as you?”

A less experienced, more skittish detective might have flinched at her carefully worded accusation, or perhaps even lost his temper at the merest suggestion of a threat toward his spouse…but Guy was no green officer working a beat for the first time in his career, and he had been around the likes of Killian Jones long enough that he didn’t flinch easily anymore.
He’d learned a lifetime ago that you never reveal your hand until you’re sure you’re the one holding the best cards.
Giving the pain in his arse reporter a glance that was somewhere between mild annoyance and badly feigned interest, the detective cocked his head, searching her eyes for the intention behind her words.
“The husband in me finds it interesting that you’ve spent so much time studying Connor’s face, for one thing,” he teased gently despite the irritation that was fighting its way toward the surface at her implied threat. “Should I be jealous, Miss Knighton?”
Don’t make me have to kill you.
“Connor, yes ... thats his name. I had forgotten.” She cocked her head to the side, studying the man before her intently and doing her best to hide the smile that threatened at the corner of her lips. “You can hardly blame me for appreciating such a .. particular ... look. You have good taste, Detective.
Manicured nails tapped a steady rhythm as she thought over her next move, careful lest her natural inquisitiveness push too far. Glancing at the ring on the detective’s ring before shifting her focus to the interest in question, Marian pursed her lips, nodding to Guy’s spouse with another twitch of her lips. “He looks like he’s seen a thing or two, doesn’t he?”
She was certain her hunch was correct, the itch of a good story already weighing on her mind, headline already picked out. But the man before her had done more than his fair share of giving her interviews and information on leads in the past ... the least she could do was respect his privacy. But how had it stayed hidden? How had Guy’s colleagues been fooled so easily? Blue eyes turned to focus on Guy’s face once more, letting her smile finally spill forth at his guarded expression and cocking her head to one side as tongue pressed to the corner of one cheek. “Keep your secrets, Mr. Gisborne. But if I were you, I’d be careful. I can’t be the only person with eyes in London capable of recognizing ... unique ... faces.”

She should have been angry - should have been preparing to throw the once warm food she had prepared straight at his stupid, dumb face .... but as she watched the clock, every minute passing by doing nothing to ease her worry, Marian couldn’t help but feel a little scared. He had promised he would be home at a reasonable hour - had assured her that for one he would make it in before she was already preparing for sleep ... She had thought ... She had hoped...
Manicured nails drummed on the table before her as blue eyes once more flicked anxiously over her phone, searching for some missed call, some unread text ... but it was silent, as unforthcoming as before. She gazed around the dining room, noting with ever increasing sadness that the dinner she had prepared in order to celebrate no longer looked like a celebration - instead, she mused sadly, it looked like a pathetic attempt to hang onto something that you were so quickly losing ...
The sound of a car outside perked her interest and she stood up, fingers fidgeting nervously with the hem of her dress as she debated whether or not to sit back down again. She didn’t want to appear too eager .. too disappointed ... and her face fell as she once more glanced around the dining room, catching her reflection in the mirror across the hall. It was obvious she had put in an effort, the candles and her dress left no argument as to that  - and teeth bit at her lower lip as footsteps got closer to the door.
Would he think her pathetic?
“Guy!” She blanched at the eagerness of her own voice, his name suddenly sounding so harsh in the quiet of their flat, and she cleared her throat, gesturing around her with look of defeat. “ I thought - you said ... “ Teeth bit at her lower lip once more, sucking it back between them as she got to her feet, crossing the room and laying a hand on his arm. She wouldn’t reproach him, not when things seemed to be going as bad as they were ... Instead she offered a half smile, deliberately burying her feelings of resentment and disappointment somewhere deep inside where they couldn’t touch her, where they couldn’t touch him.
“I’m glad you’re home.”

The music was loud, the garish lights and random flashes of neon more than enough to make her doubt the sanity of her plan - but Marian was anything if not stubborn. Making her way through the crowd, expertly avoiding the miscalculated gestures of a particularly drunk tourist, she smiled, plunking the drink down in front of her ‘date’ for the evening.
“Drink up!”
Guy looked less than thrilled as another one of Jimmy Buffet’s hits began playing over the loud speaker and Marian grinned all the harder, reminding him of the role he had to play in this latest form of punishment with a smirk. “You did this to yourself, you know.” She took a sip of her own margarita, smacking her lips against the taste as she relished her view of the man before her. God, she loved to make him squirm.
“ Two dates, Guy. You’ve been on two dates!” She held up fingers to represent this fact, one brow rising in an effort to convey the gravity of the situation. It wasn’t like she had hounded him for details since day one - but a girl had needs! - And dammit, she was going to get her kicks. “ Need I remind you that it was my idea in the first place? And what have I gotten? Not even a thank you! Not even a ‘sorry Marian he would have worked out but he kisses like a fish’. I just as easily could have kept him for myself, you know. You owe me... “
The last few words were all but growled out in a playful manner as one manicured nail tapped on the rim of his drink impatiently. “ Drink up, Gisborne. The sooner you tell me about you and Killian Jones, the sooner your debt is repaid and you’re free to go.”

Footsteps rang loud as Marian hurried through the castle, the sound of her feet echoing off the stone walls. The guards ordered to follow her like a pair of watch dogs struggled to keep up amidst futile attempts to slow her down.
“ My lady, stop!”
She would not. Steps ran all the faster as she quickened her pace, fingers hitching up her skirt lest the fabric weigh her down. Coming out into the sunlight she blinked, blue eyes taking a moment to adjust as she halted, scanning the courtyard for the man she was so desperately seeking. Finding her target Marian stepped forward, blithely ignoring the mailed hand that reached for her, evading it easily.
“Guy!” Her voice was loud, tone more abrupt than she had meant it to be and she paused, taking a breath and slowing down as she neared him. “I’ve just seen my father.. “ The words were quiet, eyes cutting to the guards that hovered so close even then with a glare, and she shifted impatiently, trying to ignore their presence as she focused once more on the man before her. He was the one that mattered, not the ingrates he had saddled her with. Brows scrunched together with a frown as she fidgeted, doing her best to sound rational and calm despite the urgency of the situation. “He’s starving .. its filthy down there! Surely keeping me close at hand isn’t worth the potential risk of killing him.”
She hesitated for a moment, fingers reaching out as if to caress the sleeve of his leather jacket before falling back to her side once more. He was barely paying attention to her, gaze more directed on a figure in the distance and Marian glanced over briefly, recognizing the appearance of the pirate that had been taken under his and the sheriff’s wing. “Please, Guy... “ The plea was quiet as she dropped her voice, words hushed and meant for their ears alone. “ We both know what its like to fear someone we care for at the mercy of the sheriff. There has to be something ... why can you not talk to him?”
