From Old Ðusyþ tə̨tmįfšeʔiršęę, tətmįfseʔirsęę "to be hopeful", from tə̨tmįf "to carry on the shoulders" (c. Modern Ðusyþ ðötnyf of the same meaning) + šeʔiršęę "dream" (c. Modern Ðusyþ se'irs 'to wonder, to dream'), literally "to carry dreams on one's shoulders". Originally had a positive meaning, referring to someone who carries on hope through adversity, but shifted to a negative meaning of fruitlessness or futility.
