Now I understand why Avicenna
Played with magic…
The caves were echoing
His absolute thirst.
Until the voices outlived him.

My hand in your hair.
Will sow the stars of sapphire, pearl, ruby,
That you be never deaf to my desire,
My oasis and my gourd whence I aspire.

Dear Antonio,
There is something about clay
that at once stupefies and haunts me.
There is a wound, reopened,
taking the shape of you,
lost in the nothing you said you loved
and implicitly loathed.
There is a suffering, hidden in a baritone,
almost muted, hushed,
given and received
as the revelation it is,
stretching the mind-altering
eternity.
And we both fantasized about
the end that never seemed to come;
we suspended everything for it
as if it were the only way
we’d sustain living;
as nothing is guaranteed but this life’s toil.
But for whom did we live?
For the Dead-Alive or the bygone ghosts?
What is weakness and what is strength
if the self doesn’t see beyond its submission
to the supposedly healing virtues of pain?
Why do I recognize you this much, Antonio?
Why do I feel your old pain
course through my veins?
Why now?
Was I there?
All I know is I am here
and my solitude I once lent you
and the lonely ghosts
that ceased to be lonely
ever since the shadows gathered to feast
upon their collective wounds;
you’ll find Vlad*, Clarice* & Forough* in a beautifully-lit corner,
their flagellated souls have finally crossed the borders.
Will you?
Shall we, too?
Yours, posthumously & in verses.

I hear your approach.
Again you arise above the dust,
Like a vision, momentary.
You will vanish in the new dust.
A new wind will bear you away.

Yes, speak, my princess,

Vivid dreams of a land that has never been.
