Wrote out all these thoughts about Smoke and Stack’s dynamic, and how it basically revolved around Smoke keeping Stack a lite bit naïve, yet Stack being fully aware and playing into it, because they do have a smidge of twincest going on, even though they have no sexual urges toward one another.
It went much more in depth, and was about them both essentially not being able to exist in the world without each other, and Smoke kind of enjoying being able to unleash his blood thirsty side so long as he dressed it up as “protection” for Stack. And Stack reveling in that level of intense affection, because I meant he got to take care of Smoke.
It’s partially why Smoke didn’t care for Mary. She threatened his ability to keep Stack safe, but this is also why Stack held some small bit of resentment for Annie. She was a threat to his place as Smoke’s main motivation for violence.
And I think this twisted little connection stemmed from the day Smoke killed their father. He’d already spent their childhood cleaning Stack up and probably listening out for the man to try and either get Stack out the house or be the one to take the hits, but the night he beat Stack so badly he passed out? That was the day Smoke broke. He probably thought Stack was dead. Then for Stack to wake up to his brother loving him so much, he murdered their own father for him?
Yeah, that ties a bond deeply unknown by most. And in this fantasy world, where vampires, flying, mind-sharing exist… I think the twins definitely had a very dark sort of need for one another. Again, not sexual, but undeniable. And I think that is ultimately why Smoke chose death.
Obviously I’m not speaking on the literal messages of the movie, but the underbelly. I think he knew the cycle needed to end, and with Stack being immortal and fully capable of protecting himself, Smoke chose himself for once. He no longer needed to give Stack his own peace and joy to keep his mind off being abused. He no longer had to worry about Stack being killed for loving Mary.
Sure, sunlight was an enemy, but ultimately Stack became exactly what Smoke always wanted for him. Protected. Nothing could harm him going forward, and because Smoke, imo, never wanted to live in a world without Stack anyway, dying first ensured he’d never have to. Because he could have taken his chances against the klan while wearing his mojo bag, and potentially ensured he’d live to see Stack again. He didn’t. Smoke wanted freedom from Stack, and death was his only way to get it. For both of them.
The only protection Smoke deemed appropriate for Stack, to replace himself with, was immortality. Once it happened, he was ready to die.
Anyway, this is the abridged version. I was putting it on a reblog to a different post, but tumblr ate it. It was so fleshed out and in theory gave more understanding to what I was saying, but alas. Hopefully this makes sense.
