Hongjoong was pacing in his office, trying his best to focus on the conference call that was happening. He chewed on his thumbnail until he couldn't take it anymore.
"Okay, everyone shut up." He slammed his palms on the table and the other sides went quiet.
"Go fix your issues before you come to me again. You're all a mess and wasting my time!" He growled.
"Yes, boss nim!"
With that, the conference call ended. Hongjoong didn't know why he was so ticked off. But seeing everyone congregate around you to make sure you were okay while he stood at the side, it irritated him. Why couldn't he ask you if you were okay?
And the thought of you using Seonghwa's bathroom and his soaps, smelling like Seonghwa, made him dig for clothes and shove them into Seonghwa's arms to put on his bed for you.
"What's wrong with you, Kim Hongjoong?" He asked himself, massaging his temples.
"(y/n)!" Hongjoong heard Mingi's booming voice down the hall, followed by the onslaught of apologies from the tall male.
"Ah..." He threw his head back and left his office. He saw Seonghwa guiding you down the stairs. With his best friend there, how was he going to approach you?
"Excuse me." Seonghwa stepped aside to answer a phone call, leaving you there with a cup of tea to drink.
"(y/n). Are you alright?" He went downstairs and approached you. You seemed flustered as you put the tea cup down and stood up.
"Thanks for lending me your clothes, I'll wash them and return them as soon as my clothes are dry." You bowed to thank him. You were so awkward and formal with him, it was like you two were strangers again. Hongjoong was running around in circles in his head, he didn't know what to do or say.
"It's fine, (y/n). There's no rush for the clothes. Don't worry about it." He assured you. If he had to be honest, Hongjoong thought you looked cute in his clothes.
"If that's all, maybe I shouldn't take up more of your time." You forced a smile, evident that you wanted to get away.
"No, wait. You're not... Can we talk? ...Please." Hongjoong asked, that sounded a lot more like begging.
"Umm..." You fiddled with your fingers.
"Please, just for a bit. I won't take up too much of your time." Hongjoong promised. He didn't really know where to take you, going to his office was for work people but it was private.
"Do you mind coming to my office...?" He asked with a slight wince, not sure what to ask.
"Sure." Thankfully, you nodded and followed him up the stairs to where his office was. Hongjoong opened the door for you to enter.
"Feel free to sit anywhere." He gestured, observing the way your head was slightly lowered, kind of like a shamed student that was entering a principal's office to be punished.
"(y/n), I'm sorry. It seems like it's always the same thing, I do something that screws up our friendship and have to apologise for it. I just... I don't know how to act with people outside my 7 brothers, I'm not the best person..." He sighed, running his fingers through his hair.
"I don't mean to hurt you, (y/n). You know that, right? I'm trying to be a good friend but it seems like it's not really working, right?" He tried to crack a joke.
"Yeah..." You couldn't help but agree, forcing a smile.
"I- Ah..." Hongjoong threw his head back against the couch, unsure of how to phrase his words. You blinked at him, confused by his words.
"It's not an excuse but trust me when I say, I'm trying to protect you. That's why I said what I said that night. It's not about my image, I care about your image." He confessed.
"Protect me? What do you need to protect me from, Hongjoong?" You frowned slightly.
"I can't tell you." He winced.
"It's about your business or businesses, right? I can put two and two together, Hongjoong. That's what you're protecting me from." You guessed. Hongjoong sat up at your words and nodded.
"You're right. I can't tell you now but I will in due time. It's already dangerous for you, knowing my mother so I shouldn't add to that." He informed.
"But once again, I know it's not fair of me to ask but please be patient with me." He pleaded. Hongjoong didn't want to lose you, as a friend or as a person in his life. And you wouldn't admit to him that you felt the same way. Just like Mrs Kim, you felt like Hongjoong brought some sort of importance in your life.
"You were hurt when I saw you at the tournament. Is that why you were avoiding me even before that?" You asked.
"I'll answer that, only if you don't proceed to ask me how I got injured." Hongjoong stared at you, a playful glint in his eye. You rolled your eyes and nodded in agreement.
"Yes. I was injured and I didn't want you to see me limping around with a cane like a grandpa." He chuckled.
"A grandpa?" You snickered.
"I have already got enough teasing from the other kids about it. Although, I believe you wouldn't be like them and tease me, you would worry." He groaned.
"You're right, I wouldn't tease you... But are you better now? Recovered?" You asked.
"Mhmm, I'm all recovered. Seonghwa can't even poke my bruises to threaten me anymore." He leaned back with a proud smile.
"I'm happy for you?" You tilted your head, unsure of what response to give. Hongjoong laughed and stood up, gesturing for you to follow him. The two of you walked out.
"Show me the progress on the garden. I don't want to continue talking in my office, it's quite stuffy, isn't it?" He smiled as you walked side by side, going down the stairs. He didn't miss the way your eyes lit up with excitement, nodding your head.
As the two of you strolled around the garden, Hongjoong intently listened to you update him on the garden, telling him what you have been doing and changes you've made.
"I'm excited to tell the staff about the herb garden. And I planted a few vegetables as well." You informed.
"I didn't think our garden was capable of doing that." Hongjoong raised his eyebrows.
"Well, of course the weather makes it hard to grow ALL vegetables. But there are a handful you can grow, you just have to eat what grows in season." You explained.
"Can't wait." Hongjoong chuckled.
"Why is (y/n) showing hyung the vegetable garden? He doesn't even eat vegetables." Wooyoung scoffed.
"He probably told her that he loves it." Seonghwa chuckled with a shake of his head. The group of them were in the lounge area on the second floor, watching the two of you stroll in the garden.
"You should get back to work or the others might think you're slacking." You said to him with your hands on your hips.
"I'm kind of the boss around here so no one would say I'm slacking." Hongjoong scoffed.
"Are you trying to convince me or yourself? Because it seems like Seonghwa's the real boss around here." You threw your head back in laughter while Hongjoong's jaw dropped slightly. You smirked to yourself as Hongjoong held his hands up in defeat and headed back into the house, letting you get back to finishing your work.
"So, you like vegetables now, hyung?" Hongjoong came in and looked up to see all 7 brothers staring down at him from the banister of the second floor lounge with knowing smiles.
"Shut up. Go back to work!" Hongjoong barked at everyone. The boys all scurried, except Seonghwa.
"I hate that you're not intimidated by me." Hongjoong rolled his eyes as he walked up the stairs while Seonghwa had a smirk on his face.
"There's nothing for me to be scared of. The number of times I've seen your clumsy self fall flat on your face outweighs how scary you can be." He chuckled.
"You know wayyy too much." Hongjoong glared.
"Mmm, the ammunition comes in handy sometimes." Seonghwa punched Hongjoong's arm and headed back to his office.
"Hyung, free for me to run numbers with you and Jongho?" Yeosang asked. Hongjoong checked his watch and nodded, walking to his office with the two.
"Yeosang hyung gave me a run down of the contracts that were offered with the equities and shares. I managed to work the numbers out to see if we should sign it or not." Jongho explained, taking a seat in one of the chairs.
"Okay, hang on. I think I should call Hwa in to look at the numbers too." Hongjoong said, sending a message to his best friend. Seonghwa walked in a few minutes later.
"Sorry, you'll have to share the copy with Hongjoong hyung." Jongho said. Seonghwa nodded and sat beside Hongjoong.
"So I've circled the main points of focus. I'll go through each one." He started the discussion.
As you continued your work, you were a little more careful about getting any mud or dirt on Hongjoong's clothes, even if he told you he was not bothered.
"pH levels are good." You smiled in satisfaction, looking at the test strip. Then you wrote it down in your notes.
"Miss (y/n), would you like some refreshments?" One of the maids came out and bowed to you.
"I'm good, thank you. Could I get a broom to clear the pavements of the dirt and debris, please? Oh! And trash bags too." You requested with a sheepish smile.
"Ah, you can just leave it and we'll clean it up later. Don't worry about it." She smiled.
"Nonsense, I made the mess, I should clean it up. It won't take too long. Besides, I don't want to risk anyone tripping or slipping. Some of the guys can be a little clumsy." You chuckled. The maid had to stifle a laugh but nodded in agreement, bowing before she left to get you what you needed.
"Thank you." She opened the trash bag for you to gather the dirt, roots and leaves that you've pruned to toss in. She followed you to each plot with the trash bag.
"You can just leave it. I wouldn't want to take you away from your other tasks." You smiled.
"It's okay. There's nothing urgent that needs me." She assured you.
"That should be all for now though. I'll just do some other stuff to finish up for today." You told her as she tied up the bags and put them to the side.
"Alright, if you need anymore help. Please do not hesitate to ask any of us." She bowed deeply and headed back in.
"(y/n)! Stop working and come! The chefs made pie and it's still hot!" San yelled from the doors. You straightened up from where you were packing dirt around the plant's roots.
"Alright!" You replied and packed your things before jogging back to the house. You went to wash your hands first.
"Oh! Hongjoong, I didn't see you there. Are you alright?" You nearly bumped into the male, noticing the ghastly tired look on his face. He let out a long sigh, rubbing his face with his hands, showing that he was not ok.
"Just technical work stuff, I don't like working with numbers. Got distracted when I heard the others yelling about pie or something." He chuckled.
"It's good to take breaks, especially pie breaks." You giggled.
"There you are!" Mingi cheered when he saw you and Hongjoong enter the dining room.
"Would you like custard or ice cream with your pie?" Wooyoung asked, pulling you in and sat you down in one of the seats.
"Ice cream, please." You requested. Soon, the butler placed a dish with the slice of warm pie and one scoop of vanilla ice cream on top with some sort of crumble topping.
"Hey, (y/n) should sit here." Yunho said, pointing to the seat next to him.
"I sit there." Mingi shot his best friend a betrayed look.
"It's okay, I'll just stay here." You chuckled. You didn't want to get involved in their best friend squabble.
"Good choice, (y/n)." Wooyoung smiled triumphantly, holding his plate of pie in his hand and taking the seat next to you. The others jeered at him while he just stuck his tongue out at them. You giggled, they could be so childish for grown men. Hongjoong shook his head and let out a sigh of despair.
"How's the pie?" Yeosang asked you with a kind smile, not bothered by his brothers' childishness. You covered your mouth as you chewed, giving him a thumbs up.
"Okay, kids. Enough. Eat your food." Seonghwa said, getting between the others like a mother.
"I swear I have no idea how they're functioning adults. They're actually 5 years old." Hongjoong clicked his tongue.
You sat quietly, noticing how they interacted with each other. They were just like a regular family, with Seonghwa and Hongjoong as the parents of 6 kids, all with different personalities.
"(y/n), would you like to stay for dinner?" San invited.
"Oh, I shouldn't..." You rubbed the back of your neck, already feeling like you overstayed.
"Nonsense. We already established that you're not just a regular employee here. You should stay! The chefs are making a nice seafood dinner." Wooyoung said.
"Yeah, you should stay. I'll take you home after." Hongjoong offered with a kind smile. After apologising and making up with you, Hongjoong wasn't ready for you to go home yet. He wanted you to stick around longer.
"But of course, if you have other engagements, we understand." Seonghwa interjected, not wanting you to feel pressured to stay for dinner. You sent him a grateful smile.
"Ah... alright..." You nodded.
"But no more going back to work! You should join us for games, do you know Mario Kart?" Yunho asked.
"Yes but I haven't played it in a long time. I think the last time I played it was after school at an arcade? I don't have a game console." You tried to remember.
"Don't worry, we'll go easy on you the first round." Mingi smirked.
"I don't know..." You felt like you shouldn't be playing around during your working hours, it felt wrong especially since you were paid.
"Well we pay you and we say it's fine! We'd much rather you come and game with us." San winked, resting his head on his hand as he finished his dessert.
"But-" You shot Hongjoong a conflicted look, wanting him to somehow rescue you.
"Go on and have fun." He chuckled, leaning back in his seat. You sighed as you let the others lead you away to the theatre room to game. Of course, they wouldn't have brought you to Yunho and Jongho's computer room to game. It was too risky and there might be important information scattered around.
"Don't be late for dinner!" Seonghwa yelled as you all went upstairs. Hongjoong shook his head with a laugh and wiped his mouth with the napkin before standing.
"Where are you headed?" His best friend asked him.
"A nap. All I see are Jongho's numbers in my head and it's hurting my brain." Hongjoong yawned.
"Aren't you going to join them to game? (y/n) might appreciated your support as she competes against the rest." Seonghwa stated with an amused smile.
"I know what you're trying to do and I'm telling you to stop that. It'll embarrass her and make things awkward." Hongjoong glared.
"I'm not doing anything~" Seonghwa sang innocently and the two went upstairs to their rooms.
"You're becoming more human, Joong. And that's not necessarily a bad thing." The taller said before entering his bedroom. Hongjoong opened his mouth to clear his confusion but decided against it and entered his bedroom. He leaned against his closed door.
"More... human..." He repeated Seonghwa's words, heading to his bathroom to wash his face and change out of his business suit so he could nap comfortably.
"Oh my gosh! I won!" You jumped up and cheered, hi-fiving Yunho.
"Beginner's luck!" The other 3 competing against you excused, making you roll your eyes.
"You guys are such sore losers." You pointed at them. Mingi boo'ed, Wooyoung jeered at you with a thumbs down and Jongho demanded a rematch.
"You were great, (y/n)." San and Yeosang shot you encouraging smiles with thumbs up.
"Thank you, peanut gallery." You curtsied.
"No, no, no. Rematch! And we won't go easy anymore. Get ready to lose!" Jongho growled, showing just how competitive he is.
"Sorry, I don't race with losers I've already beat." You said with a confident shrug, making San, Yunho and Yeosang wince at your words. Of course, you were just joking.
"Okay, ONE rematch. You win again, you'll take the title of 'champion' and you have gloating rights!" Mingi stated, trying to negotiate with you. You rolled your eyes dramatically and sat back down, taking your controller back. Wooyoung cracked his fingers and neck while Jongho chugged his energy drink.
"You guys are so dramatic! She's just gonna beat you again!" San hollered at them. Luckily this room was sound proof because Hongjoong and Seonghwa would have definitely heard the shouting.
"Are you ready to lose?" Wooyoung nudged you.
"Ready to watch the back of my car the entire time?" You asked back. Yeosang shook his head while Yunho cheered.
"Go, (y/n)! Hurry up so we can have a turn!" Yunho yelled. Jongho loaded a new race. As the race counted down, the room grew silent. Only the game sounds were heard.
"It's 3 vs 1! That's unfair!" You screamed as you narrowly dodged the shell Mingi threw.
"Hey, play fair!" Yeosang said.
"All's fair in love and war." Jongho growled. Glancing at the other screens, you saw Wooyoung ready to launch a blue shell at you so you breaked and let Jongho go in front, only for the shell to hit him.
"Hyung!" Jongho roared as you laughed victoriously and raced forward as Jongho's character took 2 seconds to recover.
"Winner!" You shouted. San, Yeosang and Yunho ran to you to join your celebration, the group of you hugging each other and jumping in a circle like you won the Nobel Prize or something. Although, you were unaware you were being watched the entire time.
"What's all the ruckus?" Hongjoong raised an eyebrow as he walked in with Seonghwa beside him.
"I won!" You giggled.
"She beat all of them, twice." Yunho informed the oldest two. They had amused looks on their faces. With how competitive everyone is, they were surprised your beat them twice.
"Now, a celebration dinner awaits. And I'm pretty sure you were granted gloating rights?" Seonghwa asked.
"Of course." You grinned.
"Aww, we didn't get to play yet!" Yunho, Yeosang and San complained but Seonghwa was not going to have his dinner delayed. He turned the game off and ushered the boys out of the theatre.
"I think you'll fit in just fine, (y/n). If you can handle them, you can handle anything." Hongjoong chuckled.

"Sorry, sir. This is a private event for listed vendors only." The guard came up to you and Jihoon.
"Oh, he's with me." You explained to the guard.
"Apologies, miss. But we only have you listed under the florist teams. As this event has tight security and many high profiled guests attending, I cannot allow someone to be here without being checked." The guard said.
"Of course. We understand." Jihoon cut in. He glanced behind the guard and saw Hongjoong standing there, watching the entire exchange with a smirk on his face.
"Actually, are you done? I can head back with you." Jihoon turned to you.
"Oh... I'm not really done yet. Plus, the event is organised by someone I know. You've met him, Hongjoong..." You informed.
"I see. It's fine, I'll see you tomorrow or something. Let us know when you're heading back." Jihoon patted your head. You nodded with an apologetic smile and waved as he headed off.
"Hongjoong, if she finds out, she's not going to be happy." Seonghwa said as Hongjoong watched Jihoon leave with a proud smile.
"Then she won't find out, Hwa." Hongjoong shot his best friend a pointed look and walked away.
"If only I could take (y/n) to the gala with me. Have her on my arm." Mingi said absentmindedly, not realising Hongjoong was standing behind him.
"Mingi." San coughed. Mingi blinked in confusion and turned around to see Hongjoong standing there with a threateningly stoic expression on his face. He reached up to slap the back of Mingi's head and walked over to Yunho, who was discussing things with the venue's manager.
"You're dead." San whistled.
"Not surprising but enlighten me. Why is Mingi hyung dead?" Jongho asked with a snicker, having heard what San said to the taller. Mingi rolled his eyes with a low groan.
"He said he wants to take (y/n) as his date to the gala. Right in front of Hongjoong hyung." San chuckled.
"Goodbye, Mingi hyung." Jongho waved.
"It's not my fault he stood behind me. Besides, he's so protective and possessive of her but he would never admit it or act on his feelings." Mingi scoffed.
"Those that are done can go to the prep rooms." Seonghwa said, calling the younger boys.
"You guys, go first." Hongjoong told everyone. They watched as he jogged to where you were, starting a conversation with you.
"He should just ask her to come with him tonight." Yeosang tilted his head.
"He did. He got rejected. This isn't (y/n)'s scene and Hongjoong hyung doesn't want to make her even more uncomfortable. You should have seen their reactions when they found out that (y/n) was the florist for the gala." Yunho informed.
"Oh, yikes. Okay, let's leave them then." Wooyoung winced as they headed to the rooms where they were going to get dressed and prepare themselves for the gala.
"You did this... Didn't you?" Mingi asked his best friend as they walked side by side.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Yunho replied with a glint in his eyes.
"As your best friend, I have to tell you that you're one scary man, Jeong Yunho." Mingi shivered. Yunho burst out laughing, slinging his arm around Mingi's shoulders.
"I am great! I should open a matchmaking service." Yunho joked.
"That's if Hongjoong hyung and (y/n) doesn't kill you first." Mingi raised his eyebrows.
"Hongjoong hyung, I'm not scared of. (y/n) on the other hand... I don't know her well enough to know if she actually has the ability to kill me. But I'm sure they'll thank me soon." Yunho's eyes widened.
"Sure..." Mingi chuckled as they entered the presidential suite, where they will all be getting ready. San and Jongho were already laying in one of the big beds, lounging lazily while Seonghwa and Yeosang were discussing something in front of their iPads. Wooyoung looked like he was scolding someone on the phone.
"The outfits are here." Yunho announced, pulling the clothing rack in that was delivered to them.
"Check through to make sure it's okay." Seonghwa said to everyone. They took turns, unzipping the fabrics and making sure that all their clothing items were there.
"I'm using this space for my accessories." Wooyoung announced, reserving one of the tables so he could lay his things out.
"I'm gonna nap." Jongho yawned and went back to the bed.
"(y/n)." Hongjoong called.
"Hongjoong, I was about to come look for you. I'm done with the set up if you would like the check." You smiled, packing up the empty boxes and your water spritzer.
"No, I won't check. I trust that you know what you're doing." Hongjoong teased you with a cheeky smile.
"Now that makes me more pressured." You punched his arm. You both strolled around the place, giving Hongjoong a chance to check the floral arrangements. But to be honest, he wasn't even really paying attention to the flowers.
"So, are you thinking of heading back already?" Hongjoong asked.
"I feel like I should stay in case anything goes wrong when the gala starts but if you think I should go home now, I can...?" You looked at him, giggling.
"No! No, no. That's not what I'm saying. You can stay as long as you like." Hongjoong involuntarily raised his voice defensively.
"I'm just kidding, Hongjoong." You smiled.
"We have rooms to rest in until the gala begins, if you'd like to hang out there. It's upstairs." Hongjoong offered. You thought about it, should you be seen hanging out around them?
"Don't worry." Hongjoong said softly, as if he knew your fears. You chewed on your bottom lip but nodded.
"Alright, this way." He gestured and you both headed to the lift.
Hongjoong's right, you shouldn't feel uncomfortable. You're just friends with Hongjoong and you didn't have any ulterior motive in being his friend, you didn't even know he was rich before. He was always known to you as Mrs Kim's son. You were just unfamiliar with all the looks and stares.
"Are you hungry? We usually get food." Hongjoong asked as you both travelled in the lift.
"No thanks, I'm good. But also, don't you guys have like michelin star chefs and all that cooking for the gala tonight? Wouldn't you guys be too full?" You asked.
"We're usually too busy to eat since we're handling other things, networking, greeting people, all that." He explained.
"Also, you've seen the boys eat. They can eat multiple meals in one seating." He added.
"Yes, I have seen that. They do eat a lot." You laughed. Hongjoong led you to the presidential suite and swiped his room card, opening the door for you to enter.
"(y/n)'s here." Hongjoong said to the boys, not announcing your arrival but more of a warning to them.
"Hi again, (y/n)." Yunho waved but his eyes were glued to the screen of the gaming console.
"Hi, Yunho and Yeosang." You chuckled, sitting on the couch behind him and Yeosang, who were challenging each other in some game that looked like street fighter. Yeosang gave you a backwards wave as he focused on trying to beat Yunho.
"(y/n), can I try to change your mind in attending the gala with me tonight?" Wooyoung sat on the couch beside you and slung an arm around your shoulders.
"Are you asking me to be your date?" You raised an eyebrow.
If you saw Hongjoong now, you would have seen him about to burst a blood vessel but he stood behind you, plotting Wooyoung's death.
"Of course, we'll be the next power couple." Wooyoung smirked. You just laughed in reply.
"Thanks for the flattery, Wooyoung. But it's really not my scene. You guys know this rich people world and I don't." You giggled. Despite this, Wooyoung didn't remove his arm from you.
"Don't go touching people without permission." Hongjoong growled and pinched Wooyoung's arm, making him recoil.
"If you're worried about looks, I can get you dress right here, right now. Just say the words." Wooyoung winked.
"Let it rest, Wooyoung ah. Don't make (y/n) feel cornered." Seonghwa said with a chuckle, hiding under the guise that he was caring for you. Actually, he didn't want Hongjoong to have a heart attack or stroke right before the gala just because Wooyoung was deliberately trying to rile him up.
"Here." Hongjoong passed you a glass of sparkling water with a lime wedge, noticing you didn't have anything to drink yet. You received it with a grateful smile.
"Room service is here." Mingi yawned, going to open the door for the staff to enter who pushed in carts of food.
"Wow, that's a lot of food." Your eyes widened.
"Told you. Help yourself, okay?" Hongjoong smiled, taking a plate and handing it to you first before the boys could ravage the food. Since you were not that hungry, you grabbed some fries first.
"Isn't anyone gonna wake San and Jongho?" Yeosang asked as he turned off the game.
"Nope. They snooze, they lose." Yunho stretched his arms, putting a forkful of pasta and a chunk of steak on his plate.
"Let me know what time I should leave for you guys to get ready." You told them.
"Get ready to stay the entire time because we will never tell you to leave, (y/n)." Mingi laughed. You laughed along with him, shaking your head.
You thought they were joking but Mingi was right, the boys all adored you too much to tell you to leave. Usually, they wouldn't care and just speak their minds but with you, even as their friend, they liked having you around with them.
But when the time came, you did excuse yourself, letting the boys change and get ready while you went downstairs.
"Hey, you! I've been trying to talk to you. You didn't mention that you're close friends with the organiser!" The girl from before came up to you with a big grin.
"Honestly, I didn't even know they were the organisers. Both us didn't know." You rubbed the back of your neck.
"You're so lucky, they're all so good looking. And no one dares to approach them because of their status." She giggled.
"We're just friends, I guess I never took into account their status." You shrugged.
"Some of the guests are arriving soon. If you want to observe the event, we can stand over there to remain out of the way." She pointed to the corner.
"Thank you. I just want to make sure the flowers are okay. If there are any that are wilting or drooping, I'll change it." You explained.
"Sure. I have to go help with ushering. See you!" She patted you on the shoulder and ran off.
You tried your best to stay hidden by the corner of the room, watching as guests finally began to stroll in. They were all high society people, you even recognised some celebrities and politicians here. Compared to the simple clothes you were wearing, they were dressed to the nines.
You have never felt so out of place.
"Entering now, let's welcome to organisers of this gala." The announcer said. You turned your head to see the 8 standing there, dressed in their matching purple, velvet outfits.
"Good evening." They walked down the stairs together, the diamonds of their accessories shining under the light of the chandelier.
"Wow." You couldn't help but admire how handsome all of them were. Everyone clapped for them.
They scattered around, with people rushing to greet them and shake their hands. Hongjoong looked so different, confident and charismatic as he greeted people.
"Mr Kim. Nice to see you." An older gentleman approached Hongjoong with a girl by his side, you figured she was his daughter.
"Hongjoong. How are you?" She smiled and pulled Hongjoong into a hug of familiarity.
"I hope you 2 are enjoying the gala so far." Hongjoong smiled back. The girl naturally hugged Hongjoong's arm as he conversed with her and her father.
"She's so pretty." You couldn't help but comment to yourself. She was obviously rich, someone from Hongjoong's world. You tried to ignore the sudden tighteness in your chest, clearing your throat and tearing your eyes away to observe the rest of the gala.
Then you were struck with a reality check. This scene wasn't you, you were not familiar with this. This wasn't your world.
"(y/n), are you alright?" You didn't realise that Jongho had come over to you, noticing the tense look on your face. Blinking to re-focus yourself, you nodded your head.
"Everything looks under control here so I think I'm going to head back." You told him.
"Are you sure? If you're not feeling well, you can rest in the room. We don't mind it." He tried to offer his room card to you.
"No, no. It's fine, Jongho. I'm fine, don't worry, thank you for the offer though. I'll just go home now, see you." You forced a small smile and patted his arm.
"Wait, at least let me arrange for our driver to send you back. It's late and you shouldn't be alone." He protested.
"Thanks but I'd rather walk. Have a nice evening." You said and left before he could insist further.
You and Jongho didn't realise that while talking to business partners, Hongjoong kept his eye on you the entire time. He wasn't even focusing on what the man and his daughter was saying.
"Jongho, is (y/n) okay? Where did she go?" When he was finally able to get away from the very boring conversation, he caught the youngest by the arm. When he saw you leave the ballroom with a slightly grim expression after speaking with Jongho and not returning, he was worried.
"She said she's fine but I'm not sure. I told her that she could go up to the room to rest but she wanted to go home." Jongho explained.
"Did you get the driver to send her back? It's so late." Hongjoong asked, checking his watch to see the time.
"No. I wanted to and insisted but she wanted to go home on her own, she walked away before I could argue further. Hyung, is everything okay?" Jongho blinked.
"Yeah..." Hongjoong replied, absentmindedly.
"I need to-" Hongjoong was cut off by Seonghwa heading over with someone else.
"There he is. Hongjoong, I've been looking for you. This is the new medical director that will be overseeing our new wing at the hospital." Seonghwa smiled as he introduced.
"It's nice to meet you, Mr Kim. Thank you for entrusting me with such a responsibility. I will not let you down." The male bowed.
"Sure." Hongjoong said, not shaking the guy's hand. Seonghwa could tell his best friend's mind was somewhere else.
"Hyung, you go ahead. I'm Choi Jongho, one of the 8 leader seats of the organisation." Jongho cut in front of Hongjoong, shaking the guy's hand on behalf of Hongjoong. Hongjoong patted Jongho on the shoulder and walked away.
"Nice to meet you, Mr Choi." The male bowed with a smile. Even if Hongjoong was the leader, Jongho was just as important. Seonghwa's eyes subtly followed where Hongjoong disappeared to.
"Excuse me." Seonghwa said politely and excused himself, scanning the room to find Hongjoong.
"Hyung, what's wrong?" San asked.
"Nothing. Did you see Hongjoong?" Seonghwa asked back, still looking around for the missing captain but there was just too many people. San shook his head.
"I can't believe he went AWOL." Seonghwa cursed.
"What? I'm sure he is somewhere, hyung. We've all been roped into conversations with people. Maybe he's just occupied." San said.
"No, he's gone." Seonghwa sighed with a shake of his head. Taking his phone out, he sent Hongjoong a quick text before he was soon approached by yet another business partner.
"Yunho sshi, did you see Hongjoong sshi? I've been looking for him since our conversation earlier." A girl came up to the taller.
"No, weren't you with him? Talking with your father." Yunho tilted his head.
"He said he will be right back and just disappeared. He was talking to Jongho sshi about something." The girl said. Yunho nodded and saw the maknae engaged in a conversation with the new medical director. Being taller than the rest, he was able to easily look through the crowd. That was when he noticed someone else missing.
"Maybe he's just talking to other business partners. There is a lot to discuss tonight with multiple people." Yunho lied. The girl's cheeks flushed in embarrassment.
"Right, I understand." She cleared her throat and left.
"Jongho ah, did Hongjoong hyung and (y/n) run away together?" Yunho approached the youngest.
"Yeah. She looked upset about something and left to go home. I told Hongjoong hyung and he seemed quite bothered by it. I wouldn't be surprised if he left the party." Jongho sighed.
Hongjoong didn't really know where to go. He didn't want to call you and make you think he was watching you or something.
"Where to go?" He stood in the middle of the street, wondering if he should go to your home or the shop.
"Mister, are you a celebrity?" A couple of girls approached him. Right, he forgot that he was in his gala outfit and wearing God knows how much money worth of white gold and diamonds.
With a frown, Hongjoong ignored the girls and walked away. He walked to your shop, knowing it wouldn't be right for him to just show up at your door step. He wouldn't know how to explain himself if you asked why he was there.
"Hongjoong?" You froze when you opened the front door, intending to water your plants outside, seeing the male there.
"(y/n)." Hongjoong let out a sigh of relief.
"Wha-What are you doing here? Is the gala over? Did something happen?" You blinked, frowning slightly in worry. Hongjoong shook his head and walked towards you.
"Hongjo-" You were cut off when he suddenly pulled you into a tight hug, effectively cutting you off.
"I hate when you're upset. I worry when you're upset." He whispered.
"Upset? I'm not upset. There's nothing to worry about." You stated, unsure of what to do with your hands. Were you supposed to hug him back?
"I know you are. If you weren't, you wouldn't have left." He said. You felt the warmth of his cheek against your own.
"I'm not..." You didn't really know what to say. You were stunned, to be honest, because you didn't think that he would have noticed.
"We shouldn't do this outside. People are staring." You suddenly said. Hongjoong pulled away and nodded. Keeping your gaze down, you walked back into the shop with him in tow. Once you were in and away from public eye, you turned to look at him.
"I'm not upset. I didn't leave because I was upset." You stated, eyes looking everywhere else but him.
"Then?" Hongjoong tilted his head.
"I don't know. I don't know how to explain it because I barely know what I'm feeling. It's not that I won't explain it, it's that I can't." You let out a soft sigh of frustration.
"May I?" He asked softly, holding his hand out to you. You stared at it for a few seconds, hesitating before putting your hand in his.
"(y/n), I... I never expected it and I'm guessing you too. But I like you and not just a friend." Hongjoong said.
"What?" Your head shot up.
"I know you think we're very different and maybe we are. But our worlds don't have to be parallel. Look where we are, we've met somehow. And if you would give me a chance..." He trailed off.
"Hongjoong, I... I don't... I..." You didn't know what to say but your first instinct was to retract your hand.

To be honest, you didn't think Hongjoong would take your passing comment seriously. The second day of the week that you were supposed to go for work at the house, Hongjoong told you not to come for work. He wanted to take you out on a date.
"But I have work! Work for your house." You said to him as you sat in the car after he picked you up. You didn't have an 'issue' with going out on a date with him, it just felt wrong to do it on a work day.
"You're already in the car, just enjoy the date." He chuckled.
"I know and I'm not questioning that I'll enjoy what you planned but maybe I can convince you to detour to the house." You chuckled.
"Besides, weren't you the one who said that the garden is fine that you don't even need to come over that often anymore?" He reminded with a teasing smile.
"I said the garden was getting there, it's not there yet. You took me way too seriously." You scoffed.
"I always take what you say seriously." Hongjoong raised his eyebrows at you before turning back to focus on driving.
"So... where are we going?" You turned to look out the window, changing the subject to hide how flustered you were by his words. Hongjoong smiled, knowing he got a reaction out of you.
"You'll see. It's a nice place, don't worry." He assured.
"I'm not worried." You rolled your eyes. Honestly, you were happy to go anywhere with Hongjoong. But you noticed that the buildings were slowly disappearing and all you saw were trees. You realised that Hongjoong was bringing you somewhere in the countryside or just out of the city.
"The weather is great here." You smiled. Seeing that there were no cars, Hongjoong slowed the car down to put down the hood of the car, having put it up earlier when it started to drizzle.
"Wow." You took a deep breath, closing your eyes. The fresh air of nature was something you loved.
"We're not even there yet." Hongjoong reminded.
"Doesn't matter, I'm already loving it." You giggled. Hongjoong was relieved he chose the right place for your first official date. Okay, with help from the others.
"Now, we're here." Hongjoong parked the car within the gravel space and came around to open the door for you.
"Thank you." You smiled and got out.
"How did you find this place?" You looked at the little old house that was a little restaurant. It wasn't crowded and looked rather hidden. Plus, you didn't think a lot of people would drive out here for that.
"A magician never reveals his secrets." He winked and locked the car. After that, he guided you towards the restaurant.
"Reservation for 2, under Kim Hongjoong." He told the older lady, who came out to greet the two of you warmly. You assumed that she was the owner here. She nodded and led the two of you to a table right by the big open window.
"Is this seat alright?" She asked, looking up at Hongjoong.
"It's perfect." Hongjoong smiled at her with a bow of his head. He knew it was right when you just stood there, staring out into the scenary of fields and flowers.
"I didn't even know a place like this existed so close to Seoul." You turned to Hongjoong.
"We can come back whenever you want. It's good to get away from the city every now and then." He said, pulling the chair out for you.
"I'd really like that." You sat down and he took the seat opposite you. The lush fields, trees and greenery was amazing. You wished you could look at this forever.
"Here you go." The lady came back with menus.
"Are you enjoying the view, miss?" She asked, noticing how you could barely tear your eyes away to look at the menu.
"I am. I love it. You're very lucky to be able to see this everyday." You smiled at her. She chuckled and nodded in agreement with your words before leaving you and Hongjoong to browse the menus.
After choosing some appetisers to share and your individual mains, as well as some drinks, the lady came to take your order. You looked around the restaurant, the house was old but it was well maintained and cozy. It almost felt like you were eating in someone else's house and not a restaurant.
"I take it you're impressed?" Hongjoong tilted his head.
"I am. But you know, Hongjoong, I don't mind where we go. It's more about the company than the place or price." You said.
"Same for me." He smiled back. That was one of the rare times you openly admitted to like spending time with him, it was good, a progression in your relationship.
"Here is some bread and your starters." The lady placed the bread basket down along with the salad and chicken appetiser you ordered to share.
"Thank you." You and Hongjoong smiled.
"Dig in." He gestured for you to start. You took a piece of warm bread and broke it apart to eat.
"How is it?" He asked as he moved to serve you some salad before putting some chicken on his own plate. You nodded with a thumbs up as you chewed.
"Good to hear." He grinned and ate the chicken, taking a piece of bread as well. You picked up a fork to eat the salad.
"The salad is really good. The dressing is great. You should try some." You encouraged. Hongjoong shot you a suspicious look and made no move to put some salad on his plate. He could not be convinced that a salad was good.
"Here." You made a bite and put it on your fork, holding it out to him. Hongjoong blinked at the fork that you held out to him, not knowing what he should do.
"Oh, sorry! I don't know why I did that, I just acted out of instinct." You were about to retract your hand when he grasped your wrist.
"You're right, it is good. Sweet from the fruits." Hongjoong said as he chewed the salad, having just eaten off your fork.
"And don't apologise." He added.
When the appetisers were done, the lady brought your mains to you. As you ate a bite, you would look out at the view as your chewed. You didn't even notice Hongjoong staring at you with a soft smile.
"We can go there for a walk later." He told you, making you turn your head back.
"I'm looking forward to that." You grinned. Both you and Hongjoong offered the other person a bite of your food to share.
"Mmm, it is very good." You nodded as you wiped your mouth. This closeness, this peacefulness here reminded you so much of your lunches with Mrs Kim. It felt like you were with her again, sharing food with her while you relaxed and chatted. But you knew it wasn't her, it was her son.
"Do you think you'll ever live like this? Away from the city?" Hongjoong asked.
"As much as I love the view, I know the reality is that I can never be too far from the city. Convenience of things, work, it's better in the city." You sighed.
"Maybe a vacation house then? A place you can come to every now and then." He suggested and you hummed in agreement.
"What about you?" You asked back.
"If I were on my own, I'd probably feel bored. I grew up a city kid and like you said, with work, I have to be in the city. But if I had company, I don't think I'd ever want to leave." He smiled softly.
"It's peaceful and private." He agreed. Since you two were too full for dessert, Hongjoong got the bill after you were done eating.
"You're always paying, Hongjoong. You never let me pay." You frowned as he handed the cash to the lady.
"Because I want to treat you so don't worry about it." He replied, putting a hand on your head. The lady giggled at the interaction between the two of you. She walked you both to the door with you and Hongjoong bowing gratefully to her.
"Ah, I have to take this. Sorry." Hongjoong took his phone out of his pocket. You shook your head, he had no need to apologise. Work was work, it wasn't his fault.
"Miss, would you like to see the garden as you wait?" The lady came out, noticing you standing there waiting for Hongjoong.
"Yes, please." Your eyes lit up in excitement.
When Hongjoong hung up with a sigh, he turned around but realised you were no longer standing there. He heard your voice and walked around the side of the restaurant to see you there with the owner.
"Oh, a dryer compost." You said in amazement as you crouched down beside the owner as she showed you around her garden.
"Ah, no." You shyly shook your head, refuting whatever the owner was saying to you.
"Beautiful." Hongjoong breathed out, taking his phone out to snap a picture of you smiling as you looked at the garden, giving your full attention to the owner.
"Thank you so much." You smiled and bowed gratefully to the owner before walking over to where Hongjoong was.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know you ended your call. I hope you weren't waiting long. The owner wanted to show me her garden and she's growing a lot of amazing vegetables." You rambled on, a little embarrassed that you were caught nerding out over plants. To you, it was totally unattractive.
"Nothing to apologise for. I'm the one who should be sorry for making you wait while I take a work call." Hongjoong smiled, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind your ear.
"It's not your fault. It's work. I understand that it's unavoidable. Are you needed somewhere?" You asked.
"Nope, they can handle it. I'm yours for the whole day." He grinned.
"Ah..." You looked away, embarrassed when Hongjoong said that he was 'yours'. Hongjoong chuckled, knowing he managed to get you flustered.
"A-Anyway, the owner said that there's a nice path through the safe area of the forest..." You trailed off, changing the subject.
"Let's go then." Hongjoong gestured for you to walk ahead. You waved to the owner for the last time and walked in the direction of the path, missing the wink that she sent Hongjoong's way.
"Is this boring for you? We can do something else." You turned to him as you both walked through the forest.
"(y/n), stop worrying. This isn't boring at all. Just enjoy yourself." Hongjoong smiled softly.
Honestly, Hongjoong didn't appreciate plants as much as you, probably no one appreciated plants as much as you. But he'll gladly accompany you just to see how happy nature makes you. He liked seeing you smile.
"Is that a mushroom?" Hongjoong asked in disbelief and pointed to the little caps that were growing around the tree branch. You nodded with an amused giggle.
"Is this the first time you're seeing mushrooms outside a grocery store?" You teased.
"Hey, not all of us are nature people." Hongjoong scoffed.
"I'm just teasing. Be careful not to go too near them though, I'm not sure what type of mushrooms they are or if they're poisonous. They seem to be damp with some sort of sap or excretion." You cautioned.
"Yikes, okay. I definitely knew that mushrooms can be poisonous." Hongjoong said, taking a step back.
"Shall we stop here for a break?" Hongjoong suggested as you both came to a clearing.
"Sure." You nodded. Hongjoong removed his jacket, laying it on the ground and patting it for you to sit. It felt sacrilegious to be putting such an expensive jacket on the ground.
"I don't mind sitting on the ground, Hongjoong. The ground is dry. You shouldn't dirty your jacket." You said, horrified.
"It's fine, (y/n). It's just a jacket. Besides, I've already put it on the ground." He said. You chewed on your bottom lip with uncertainty but sat down. Before he could sit on the ground, you tugged on his sleeve and made space for him to share the jacket with you. He shouldn't have to sit on the ground.
"There's more than enough space." You told him. Hongjoong nodded and sat down beside you, on top of his jacket. It was peaceful to hear the sounds of nature around you.
"Jongho would hate this place." Hongjoong stated with a chuckle, looking around the forest.
"Why?" You blinked.
"Don't get me wrong, he's fine with the plants but he's terrified of insects. Don't tell him I told you though. That's one of the only things he's afraid of." Hongjoong revealed.
"Jongho usually has such a tough demeanour. I never would have thought that..." You giggled.
"Most of them are afraid of bugs. Jongho and Mingi are the worst I think?" He recalled.
"I'm not the biggest fan of them but after working with so many plants and gardens, I've learnt how important some are to the plant ecosystem." You shrugged.
"Don't bugs just eat the crops?" He tilted his head.
"Not all. Like bees are super important to everything we do, they're responsible for pollinating. Worms are needed to make composts and to enrich the soil, they break everything down. And ladybugs are often added to gardens to help with pest control." You explained.
"Sorry, I nerd out over these things." You realised you were once against rambling.
"Stop apologising, (y/n). It's fine to be passionate about things. Plants and nature are your life. And I can see talking about them make you genuinely happy." Hongjoong assured.
"Yeah, it does. I am happy, right here, right now." You admitted. Hongjoong smiled softly.
"I'm glad." He replied. You leaned your forehead against his shoulder in embarrassment so he couldn't see you.
As much as you didn't want to leave, the sun was starting to set so you and Hongjoong decided to head back. He folded his jacket and placed it into the trunk of his car.
"Wow." You gasped at the sunset view that greeted you as Hongjoong drove.
"It's beautiful." You held your phone up to take a picture. Then you turned to take a picture of Hongjoong too.
"Did you just take a picture of me?" He chuckled.
"It's for the memories. You took a picture of me when I was in the garden with the owner earlier." You teased and Hongjoong choked, not realising that you saw him taking pictures of you. He cleared his throat and just focused on the road, not saying anything further. You giggled, knowing you manage to stump him.
"I know we've left the place and I'm supposed to send you home but I don't want to do that yet." Hongjoong admitted, turning to you when he stopped at a red light.
"O-Oh..." You were not expecting him to say that.
"I know we're both still a little full from lunch but what about getting some shaved ice?" He suggested.
"That's still food! But sure, I'd love to have some shaved ice." You laughed. Truthfully, you didn't want this date to end too. You liked spending time with Hongjoong, you always did.
But throughout this date, you still didn't learn anything new about Hongjoong. He still didn't share anything about him with you.
"We're here." Hongjoong announced with a smile. He looked at you just fast enough to see your somber expression.
"Are you alright? Do you want to go home?" He asked, worried that his excitement had made him selfish. You shook your head, smiling at him. But this time, your smile didn't meet your eyes.
"(y/n), if you're tired, I can take you home. We can do this another time." He assured.
"I'm fine, Hongjoong. Don't worry, I just suddenly fell into deep thought about something." You waved him off. He nodded, still not entirely convince. He opened the door for you into the little cafe, the waitress bringing the two of you to a booth seat in the corner.
As you looked at the menu, Hongjoong looked at you over the top of his own menu secretly, trying to read and gauge your expression. Did he misread this whole situation?
"Should we share?" You asked, unexpectedly meeting his gaze.
"Uh, yeah. Sure. You can choose the flavour, I don't mind anything." He shrugged, looking back down at the menu.
"Can we get strawberry, please?" You ordered with the waitress. She nodded with a bow of her head. The entire time, her eyes were trained on Hongjoong.
"Will you be cold without your jacket?" You asked, feeling like a blanket of awkwardness settled over you two.
"No, I'm fine. I don't get cold easily." He smiled, shaking his head.
"One strawberry shaved ice." The waitress came back, putting the bowl of shaved ice down. She placed one spoon and napkin in front of you then she smiled at Hongjoong as she placed his down.
"Stop smiling at me." Hongjoong frowned. He didn't even look at her but everyone at the table knew he was talking to her.
"S-Sorry." She squeaked and ran off.
"Sorry about that." Hongjoong apologised to you, his gaze softening compared to when he spoke to the waitress earlier. You shook your head, it wasn't his fault and there was nothing for him to apologise for. He let out a soft sigh, with all 8 guys having good looks, you assumed he was used to it.
"Can't blame her. Maybe she was just entranced by your good looks." You tried to joke, picking your spoon up to scrape the side of the shaved ice to start eating it.
"You think I look good?" He smirked. Your eyes widened as he rendered you speechless.
"Like you don't know..." You mumbled, looking at the table as you took a bite. Hongjoong chuckled, finding your reaction endearing.
"Just eat the shaved ice. Stop making fun of me." You grumbled but that only fuelled Hongjoong's amusement even more. He threw his head back in laughter.
"Alright, alright. I'll stop." He stopped when he saw the slight pout on your face.
"The shaved ice is good." He hummed.
"Yeah, it's not too crunchy." You said, taking another bite. You realised that Hongjoong was moving the fresh strawberries over to your side for you to eat.
"Don't give all of it to me, Hongjoong. Have some yourself." You said, stopping his spoon with your own.
"It's fine. You enjoy it more than me." He smiled. But you were stubborn, taking a scoop of the strawberries and putting it onto Hongjoong's spoon, the bite that he was about to put into his mouth. He nodded in defeat and ate it.
After the shaved ice was done, Hongjoong (reluctantly) sent you home since you had to open the shop tomorrow. He pulled up to the driveway by your lift lobby.
"Thank you for today, Hongjoong. I had a really, really good time." You smiled gratefully.
"Glad to hear that." He returned the smile. But as you were about to exit the car, leaving the conversation at that.
"Wait, (y/n)." He stopped you.
"I didn't talk too much about myself today, which I know is the whole reason why we're dating to get to know each other. But it was only because I wanted to do it here." He confessed.
"What do you mean?" You blinked, sitting back down in the passenger seat.
"I need to tell you things. And if you decide to leave or run away from me, I wanted you to be able to run to your home." He said.

"Coward, coward, coward." You slammed the cushion against your forehead. As much as you deny it, you did feel bad for just wordlessly leaving the hospital. You didn't mean to run away but it was just a lot, the reality was sinking in.
Were you ready to experience those feelings on a daily? Seeing Hongjoong injured, possibly on the brink of death, or wondering if he'll come back alive.
"Maybe I should text him." You stared at the phone beside you. Hongjoong didn't call or text you after you disappeared.
*DING*
"Sorry, we're closed for lun-" You stepped out from the back room when you heard the bell ring. But you stopped in your tracks as you came face to face with Hongjoong.
"H-Hongjoong! What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be in the hospital?" The first thing you did was panic.
"I wanted to see you, (y/n). And don't worry, I didn't escape. The doctor let me go home after two more days in the hospital." He said.
Oh, right. It had been a week since you ran away from the hospital. You didn't even go into work this week, texting Yunho that you needed to take leave that day.
"You didn't come to the house on your work day... Yunho told me you informed him you needed to take a day of leave..." Hongjoong brought up, to which you nodded in confirmation. Of course you couldn't text Hongjoong directly, it would have been too obvious that you were avoiding him.
"Yeah, I was just busy with preorders so I couldn't come in. But I assured Yunho that the garden is fine." You tried to wave him off.
"You shouldn't have been at the hospital that day." Hongjoong whispered. Although he didn't mean for it to hurt, it did make your chest tighten.
"Why?" You asked.
"Because now, more than ever, you're avoiding me." He stared at you. It wasn't a question, it was the truth.
"When the call came in, I thought you were gonna die. And that... that night would have been the last time I spoke to you." You said softly, looking down as you anxiously fiddled with your fingers.
"(y/n)..." Hongjoong came closer, gently holding your chin to lift your head up to look at him.
"I don't know why... I just felt so scared." You met his eyes, feeling tears start to line your eyes and blur your vision.
"I'm sorry." He tugged you into his arms, holding you tightly. That was all he could say as guilt filled him, was this really what he wanted for you? It was selfish of him to want you in his life, knowing that you're going through such turmoil.
"Tell me whatever you're thinking about. Don't keep it in." He said. You leaned your forehead against his pec, trying to collect your thoughts on what to say.
"I... I question if I'm ready for a lifetime of that... That fear." You mumbled. Hongjoong let out a small hum.
Hongjoong's own words to Wooyoung from months ago echoed in his head. You were normal, they weren't. They were desensitised to all the bloodshed, the violence, the killing. You were not.
"I can't lie and say that you won't feel that again. I can't lie to you and tell you it'll be okay." He said.
"Mmm." You nodded.
"But I promise I'll try my best to protect you and make sure you never get hurt." His arms that were wound around your waist hugged you even tighter.
"But I'm not scared for my safety, Hongjoong. And I don't know why." You looked up at him.
"What do you mean?" He tilted his head with a small frown. You let out a soft sigh.
"When you told me everything, a part of me knew that I should have been scared. I should have cut off contact with you and the others to avoid being associated with what you do. But I wasn't. I wasn't scared of getting hurt, I was scared of you getting hurt and potentially dying." You started rambling.
"And yet, my heart hurt at the thought of not talking to you or seeing you again. I know, I'm crazy for feeling like this. I just can't rationalise it and I don't know what to do-"
You were cut off when Hongjoong cupped your face with his hands and pressed his lips against yours. You melted into the kiss.
"Don't cry." As he pulled away, he wiped a stray tear that escaped your eye.
"You're not crazy. Because I feel the same, I hate the thought of you avoiding me or never seeing you again. I know I should leave you alone, that's the only way to keep you safe." He stroked your cheek.
"No, don't leave." You shook your head, putting your hand over his own. You've just come to terms with this, you didn't want him leaving.
"I'm not going anywhere. Call me selfish, I don't care." He shook his head, pulling you in to hug you.
"It'll take me a while to get used to it... I may never get used to it." You told him.
"It's okay." That was all he could say really. Of course, Hongjoong doesn't want you to get used to it and be desensitised to such violence and horror. But at the same time, not being used to it meant that you would go through this fear and shock again.
It felt so right to you, to be here, holding onto Hongjoong. You felt his warmth and security, he was right, he did make you feel protected and safe.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have left the hospital that day." You felt the need to apologise again.
"Don't." He shook his head.
"I-I should open the shop. I have some pick ups later." You stuttered, willing yourself to pull away. You were a little flustered and embarrassed as whatever just happened registered in your head.
"I can help. Just tell me what to do." Hongjoong said, finding your flustered self adorable.
"You shouldn't keep coming here to play hooky." You chuckled, going to the front to turn the sign on the door to 'OPEN'.
"I'm not playing hooky. I can do my work wherever I am." Hongjoong argued. He even lifted his iPad to show you that he did have work with him. Honestly, he just didn't want to leave you yet.
"Would you prefer to work in the backroom? It may be quieter since customers are coming." You asked. Not that you wanted to get rid of him or hide him but you were truly embarrassed by the kiss earlier. And you needed to focus on your work, you knew that he would distract you if he remained there.
"Are you trying to get rid of me already?" He teased.
"No..." You coughed, looking away. Hongjoong laughed and sat down at your work station, taking a small corner to set his iPad up.
"I promise you won't even know I'm here." He saluted with a cheeky grin. You fought the urge to roll your eyes, how can you not know that he's right there?
"Alright then. Help yourself to the tea. It's a cold brew today." You sighed in defeat and continued on with your work.
"Good afternoon." You greeted the customers that came in.
Hongjoong lifted his head to watch you work. The way you smiled as you conversed with customers, sharing your passion for the flowers and plants that you work with, he could watch it forever.
"Here you go. Thank you." You carefully handed the bouquet to the customer and she cradled it in her arms.
"Thanks!" She bowed her head before exiting the shop. You smiled and waved to her.
"Let me wrap that up for you." You helped the customer by picking out the flowers from their bins, bringing the bunch of them to the work table where Hongjoong was. He shot you a small smile and you smiled back as you worked to arrange the flowers.
"Hi? I'm here to pick up an order?" A new voice came in after the jingling of the bell at the front door.
"I'll be right with you, sir!" You said, trying to work on your current bouquet as quickly as you could. You missed the irritated frown that the customer shot you.
"Let me handle it." Hongjoong stood up, squeezing your shoulder. You opened your mouth to protest but he was already at the counter.
"Can I have your order number?" Hongjoong asked.
"Here." The customer clicked his tongue and took his phone out to show Hongjoong the order confirmation and number. He nodded and went to the fridge to find the bouquet with the tag.
"Here you go." Hongjoong placed the bouquet down, the smile disappearing from his face.
"Cash or card?" He tilted his head, staring at the customer as if challenging him to continue with his bad attitude.
"C-Card, please." The customer squeaked nervously. Hongjoong received the card and keyed in the details. After returning the card back to the customer, he was quick to take the bouquet and leave the store. Thankfully, you hadn't seen the whole exchange between Hongjoong and the customer.
"Wow, he was in a rush... Thanks for doing that." You smiled at Hongjoong.
"No problem. Any time." He smiled and patted your head, stepping aside to let you settle the payment for the customer that you were with. He returned to his corner and sat down.
"(y/n)! (y/n)! (y/n)!" There was chaos as Nana and Eve ran into your shop, surprising you.
"What's going on? Why are you shouting?" You blinked in confusion.
"We saw that expensive car out front! That means that good looking guy is here, isn't he?" Eve squealed.
"Yeah, Mrs Kim's son, right? Where is he?" Nana nodded with a teasing grin. You nodded your head slowly, lifting a hand to point at Hongjoong, who the two have not seen yet.
"Hi." He smiled and gave a friendly wave.
"Oh! Hello." The two of them bowed and waved awkwardly. You threw your head back in laughter.
"You didn't say he was right there." Nana hissed.
"The shop is so small, where else could he be? And why are you two here in the middle of the day? Don't you two have businesses to run and customers to tend to?" You put your hands on your hips. The two just laughed, obviously finding this more important than work.
"Go, go. Shoo." You turned them around and pushed them towards the door. They sent you teasing waves with mischievous grins on their faces before returning to their own shops.
"Sorry, they can be so chaotic." You apologised to Hongjoong, pouring yourself a cup of tea.
"Mm-mm, nothing to apologise for. They were the ones with you at the tracks and they helped you with the event right?" He chuckled.
"Yes but at first, they didn't recognise you from the tracks. Only from when you bumped into them when they were coming to help me with the gala event." You explained.
"It's probably because we were separated in different sections at the tracks." Hongjoong said.
"Yeah, I was in the regular section and you were in the special, VIP section." You teased with a little giggle.
"Well, next time you'll be with me in the VIP section." He wrapped an arm around your waist to hold you against his side. You thought about how much would change in your new relationship.
"Maybe. I don't think the tracks is for me, I was only there because my friends brought me." You admitted, rubbing the back of your neck. Hongjoong nodded, understanding your reservations, he knew he shouldn't rush to introduce you to his world. He would go at whatever pace you wanted.
"Okay, back to work." You smiled at him and went to the counter. You did not want to risk customers walking in to see you and Hongjoong being affectionate.
"You don't have to stay with me the entire day, you know?" You chuckled from your spot at the counter.
"I know, I just want to. Besides, I do have to go to work tonight so I'll just go to the meeting from here." He explained with a shrug.
"(y/n), don't worry about me. I'm not bored." He shook his head with a smile, knowing exactly what you were worried about. You smiled shyly and moved to sort out your order slips.
"I've been having a lot more event orders since the gala." You informed.
"That's good. It's time people recognise your talents." Hongjoong nodded with a smile of approval.
"What talents? There are so many other professional floral artists out there that are so much better than me. I'm just a regular florist." You chuckled, shaking your head.
"No, you're great at designing and arranging too. Don't downplay yourself and your talents. Yes, you're not a floral artist but you're not just a regular florist either. And I'm not just saying that because I am biased." He added.
"You saying that makes you sound even more biased." You playfully rolled your eyes.
Your conversation was cut short by some customers walking in. You greeted them and helped them with their needs, some coming for pick ups and some having plant-care questions for you.
RINGGGGGG
"I'm gonna..." He pointed to the backroom and you nodded, waving at him to go answer the call.
"What?" Hongjoong hissed, annoyed that he was being interrupted. As he listened to his men speak to him on the phone, he paced around the back room.
"Okay, just keep him there. VIP room, everything. I'll come over right away." Hongjoong sighed and hung up.
"Hwa, where are you?" Hongjoong called his second in command.
"Over at the docks trying to clear the mess up from last week. Why? What happened? Where are you?"
"I'm at (y/n)'s shop... You and whoever else is free needs to go to my main club now. I'm leaving to head over myself. There's someone there waiting for us. And no obvious weapons." Hongjoong instructed before hanging up. After sending a text to his brothers, he stood there for a second, thinking of what to do.
"Hongjoong, is everything okay?" Just as he was about to leave, you came into the backroom. Seeing the concerned frown on his face, you matched it with a worried one.
"It's fine, (y/n). Just... something came up at work so I have to go in earlier than expected." He said.
"I hope everything's okay." You looked up at him.
"It is." He assured, reaching over to hug you, giving you a kiss on the top of your head. You followed him out as he grabbed his things, walking him to the door.
"I'l see you." He smiled. You nodded with a soft smile and waved, watching him head to his car and drive off.
When Hongjoong pulled up to his main club, he saw his brothers' cars lined up at the side where the VIP entrance was.
"Hyung." Wooyoung dropped his cigarette, crushing it beneath his foot. He didn't blame the younger for being nervous, even Hongjoong felt the itch for a cigarette to calm his nerves down.
"It may be nothing, let's not freak ourselves out." He said, sending Seonghwa a look. Before they could go in, Seonghwa grasped the captain's wrist to hold him back. They were not going in without getting more information of what was ahead of them.
"I know nothing else, Hwa. My men called me, told me he was here and that he asked to see me." Hongjoong informed.
"I want everyone calm, no matter what. No losing your temper, nothing. We don't draw weapons unless they draw weapons, you hear me?" He said to his brothers.
"Yes, captain." They all agreed. With a soft sigh, Hongjoong walked into his club.
"Weapons?" Unfamiliar bodyguards stopped them as they were about to head up to the VIP booth.
"This is my club, I'm the owner so you don't make the rules nor do you get to order me around." Hongjoong said stoicly, his expression a void of any emotion.
"Sir." The two cast each other looks and bowed, letting the group of them through. Hongjoong clicked his tongue in annoyance.
"There they are!" The moment they entered the big VIP area, a suited male stood up and approached them.
"Apologies for dropping by unannounced and even more so, before your place of business opens up. But I understand you're all busy men so this seemed like the only opportunity to have our first meeting and properly introduce myself." The male grinned at them. No one in Ateez said anything.
"I still have no idea who you are, coming into my place of business." Hongjoong spoke calmly. The male's expression faltered for a mere two seconds before recovering.
"Which is why I am here to officially introduce myself. I'm Park Sunghyun, I'm the rival candidate for the next police commissioner against the current commissioner's apprentice." He held his hand out.
"Kim Hongjoong." Was all the captain said as he shook the male's hand.
"My brothers." He nodded over to the other men that stood behind him. Sunghyun sent a small smile to the others.
"To what do we owe this visit, Mr Park?" Hongjoong asked, everyone taking their seats on one side. Sunghyun noticed how Seonghwa and Hongjoong sat in the middle of everyone.
"I hope to get AURORA Corporations' support in the election. As a big enterprise, you can sway the vote." Sunghyun smiled.
"You give us too much credit." Hongjoong chuckled.
"I plan to eradicate and crack down on illegal operations and cases of corruption. With your backing, I know I can make that happen. Please know, I only extend this courtesy, Mr Kim, because you and your brothers are either with me or against me." Sunghyun spoke.
"Is that a threat?" For the first time, Seonghwa spoke, tilting his head with a smirk.
"It's only a threat if you deem it as such." Sunghyun maintained his diplomatic smile, acting innocent. But everyone could see the sinister smile and meaning behind his words.
"Well, that's all I came to do. I hope we'll have more opportunities to get to know each other." Sunghyun stood up.
"Of course." Hongjoong gave a nod, not bothering to stand up.
"I hope you'll all consider my preposition. Have a nice evening, gentlemen." Sunghyun addressed all 8 Ateez bosses before buttoning up his blazer and taking his leave.
"Hyung-" Hongjoong cut Mingi off by holding up a hand to stop him. He stood up and looked around.
"Joong?" Seonghwa called out, trying to understand what was going through his best friend's head right now.
"No opening tonight unless this entire place is swept, do you understand? Sweep for bugs, cameras, drugs, weapons, anything. I don't care how many people you need or how long it takes. I want this place swept." Hongjoong said to the manager, who had entered after Sunghyun left.
"Yes, boss." The manager scurried out of there.
"I'll get my men here." Jongho nodded and took his phone out. With technology intelligence, they were the best to find any hidden bugs or technology in the area.
"We need to be careful and alert from now on. This is a warning that there are eyes on us." Hongjoong faced his brothers.
"Yes, captain." They all replied.

You felt nervous when you got ready to go to Hongjoong's place to work. The last time you saw each other and spoke, it was at your shop where Hongjoong confessed his feelings for you and you realised that you may have feelings for him too. You drank your iced tea with a soft sigh.
*DING DONG*
"Coming!" You put your mug down and went to answer the door. You felt your breath caught in your throat when you came face to face with Hongjoong.
"Hongjoong." For some reason, you didn't consider the possibility that he would come pick you up.
"Hey." He smiled at you.
"I'm almost ready... Come in." You returned a soft smile and stepped aside for Hongjoong to come in. Hongjoong bowed his head and removed his shoes, following you in.
"Sorry, I won't take too long. I just have some dishes I meant to clean." You hurried to the kitchen.
"Take your time, it's okay." He replied. Unlike last time, he didn't go to the couch, he stayed in the kitchen area with you.
"Can I help you? I can wash while you dry and put the plates back" He offered, already removing his jacket and rolling up his sleeves before you could reply.
"With my dishes? No, no, Hongjoong. It's fine, really." You coughed, you really didn't expect him to offer his help. It almost felt wrong for him to be helping with dishes, he probably had people help with that but you felt bad for judging him like that.
"I can wash dishes, (y/n)." He chuckled.
"I'm already done. It's not much considering I'm one person." You laughed, putting them on the drying rack. They didn't have to be returned now, they could dry until you return home.
"Would you like some cold brew tea? The weather's quite warm today and it can cool you down." You asked.
"Sure. Thank you." He said. You moved to the fridge, filling one of your to-go mugs with the cold tea from the pitcher.
"Here you go." You held it out to him. He received the mug graciously and took a sip, nodding his head at the taste. You let out a sigh of relief and returned the pitcher.
"I was worried it might be too strong, I think I went overboard with the dried leaves." You giggled.
"Not at all. I have always been more of a coffee person but after drinking all the teas you made, you've changed me." He said.
"Don't flatter me." You playfully scoffed, finally able to let out the mental breath that you have been holding. Nothing has to change, you still can be comfortable around Hongjoong.
"Shall we go?" He asked.
"Yeah. Let's go." You nodded and grabbed your bag. Like the gentleman he is, Hongjoong held the box with all your gardening tools inside while you held the jacket he removed earlier. He unlocked the car and you tried to help him with putting the box in the boot. Then he opened the door for you to get in.
"Do you mind holding that for me?" He gestured to the blazer neatly tucked in your arms. You shook your head and he closed the door to go to the driver's side.
"Should we go for lunch before returning to the house?" Hongjoong asked, starting the loud engine.
"I don't know if we should be playing hooky." You shook your head.
"It's fine, I'm the boss and technically, your boss. So I don't have to work and I can say that you don't have to start work yet." He laughed and you giggled.
"Seonghwa might beg to differ." You pointed out. Hongjoong snorted but still drove to a place where you could both grab a meal.
"Here we are. Wooyoung says the sandwiches here are good." He said, pulling up into a parking space.
"Alright, only because you already drove here despite my protests." You chuckled and got out. You waited for Hongjoong to put the hood of the car up, trying to ignore the passing stares.
"Thanks, let's go." He jogged over to you and held the door open for you.
"Woah, I guess this is a popular place." You said, noticing how packed it was inside with people waiting around either for an empty table or their orders. There was no way you and Hongjoong would find an empty table so fast.
"We're definitely not getting a seat. It's fine, we'll just eat in the car." He stood beside you with a shrug, scrutinising the menu board with his hands into his pockets.
"Are you sure about that?" Your eyes widened as you turned to him. Eating in such an expensive car? What if you drop crumbs?
"Yeah, of course. It's fine, Mingi sends my car to get cleaned all the time." He grinned.
"Be careful." Hongjoong wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you towards him to prevent someone carrying a tray of drinks from bumping into you.
"It's crammed in here." He said. You blinked, feeling flustered at how you were suddenly so close to him.
"R-Right." You cleared your throat, taking a step back slightly. You never noticed how nice Hongjoong smelt. Wait, what?
"Have you decided what you would like to have?" He leaned over to ask you. You looked up at the menu, focused on that instead of whatever happened just now and what your intrusive thoughts were.
"Umm, maybe I'll try to breakfast sandwich with a strawberry lemondade. It looks good." You said. Hongjoong nodded and continued to look at the menu, a little indecisive of what to order. When it was your turn to order, you both stepped up to the counter. Hongjoong gave your order first.
"I'll have the chicken cutlet sandwich. No lettuce, no tomato, no onions. Oh! And a berry smoothie. We'll get fries on the side to share." He ordered, fishing for his wallet.
"I can pay, Hongjoong." You said softly.
"It's fine." He smiled back and tapped his card on the reader before you could pay, receiving the order ticket from the cashier.
"I momentarily forgot you don't like vegetables." You giggled, remembering how he asked for all the vegetables to be removed from his sandwich.
"Why waste calories on things that don't taste good?" He questioned back with a smug look.
"Vegetables are delicious, Hongjoong. And they're good for you. You're worst than a child." You rolled your eyes.
"You're getting very naggy with me, like Hwa. I don't like that. Stop hanging around him so much." He narrowed his eyes at you, making you laugh.
It took you to realise that Hongjoong was using his body to shield you from the crowd in the shop. You stood between the wall and him, with him angling his body slightly, his back facing the rest of the shop to prevent anyone from possibly bumping into you.
"Order #128!" The cashier called out your number.
"Why don't you go outside? I'll get the food." He gave a kind smiled, moving past you to go to the pick up window. You left the shop and stood outside to wait for Hongjoong.
"Thank you for braving the crowd." You giggled when you saw Hongjoong emerge.
"No problem. I guess we shouldn't have come right before lunch rush." He chuckled, letting you take the drinks so he could unlock the car.
"It's fine, wasn't too bad." You said and opened the car to sit inside. You assumed you were going to sit here in the car and eat but Hongjoong started up the engine.
"Aren't we eating here?" You asked.
"We're eating in the car but not here. There's no nice scenary." Hongjoong snorted and began to drive.
"Ah, we don't need a nice scenary, Hongjoong. It's fine to eat in the carpark." You giggled. Hongjoong continued driving, parking in a spot by a park. Once he found a parking space that didn't have that many people walking through, he put the hood of the car down so the both of you could eat.
"Here." Hongjoong took the drinks from you, removing them from the cardboard holder to put them in the cupholder of the front console instead. Then he dug your sandwich out.
"This is yours. And I got sides to share." He laid the paperbag down as protection and balanced the tray of tater tots on top.
"Thank you for the food." You smiled and unwrapped your sandwich to take a bite.
"Sorry." You apologised and held your sandwich in one hand so you could take your ringing phone out. Your eyes widened slightly when you saw that it was Seonghwa calling.
"Hello, Seonghwa." You greeted. Hearing his best friend's name, Hongjoong looked at your curiously.
"Hi. Considering you're never late and that Hongjoong isn't picking up his phone, I'm guessing he detoured to some place?"
"You've guessed correctly. Sorry for being late-"
"Hwa, I told her it's fine to be late. I was the one that dragged her out for lunch before going to the house." Hongjoong took your phone from you to speak to Seonghwa.
"Yeah, we figured. I just wanted to make sure that she's with you, just in case anything happened while she was on the way here. Like I told her, I know (y/n) is never late so it must be your doing. Don't take too long, we have a 3pm meeting later."
"Ah, there you go, nagging me again. I won't be late for the meeting, I promise. If there are any papers, just put them on my desk." Hongjoong groaned.
"Hyung! I wanna speak to-"
Hearing the others in the background, Hongjoong hung up. He smiled innocently before handing you back your phone.
"Are we in trouble?" You asked. Even if you sounded like you were joking, Hongjoong could sense the underlying worry in your voice. He shook his head.
"Even if we were, it's most likely me that's in trouble. Not you." He smiled and took another bite of his sandwich.
"Your food is very... beige." You pointed out.
"Alright, I get it. I don't eat vegetables. Enough with the teasing!" He growled, holding his sandwich away from you so you couldn't make fun of him anymore.
As you finished the rest of the food, you both spoke comfortably with one another. It was easy to find common topics to talk about.
"We should go to the house. We're already late and I don't want to be any later." You said, your uncomfortableness evident in your voice now. Hongjoong nodded, not wanting to stress you out any further. He drove to the house. Just as he pulled up to the driveway, Seonghwa and Yeosang arrived on their bikes.
"Where were you two?" Hongjoong asked as they climbed off. Seonghwa raised an eyebrow, was Hongjoong really in the position to ask them that?
"Mingi fitted new suspensions so we went for a test run. Where were you, hyung?" Yeosang asked back.
"We went for a quick lunch." You replied, a little too quickly.
"Next time, we can take you for a ride if you'd like, (y/n)." Seonghwa offered with a wink. You giggled and nodded along, unable to see Hongjoong behind you, whose eyelid was twitching slightly.
"Go park your bikes, don't block the driveway." Hongjoong said to the two, leading you into the house.
"See you later." You bowed your head to the two.
"Don't take up their offer to ride with them. They're racers, it's not safe." Hongjoong cautioned. Your heart warmed, realising this was Hongjoong sharing more about their lives with you.
They all raced, cars and motorcycles. If you were going to really be around more, it was something that you would have to get used to.
"You should go to work before you're any later tooo. You can put the tools down here. I'll bring them to the garden myself." You said softly. Hongjoong shook his head and followed you to the garden. He placed the box on the ground.
"Thank you, Hongjoong. Not just for this but for the lunch... And picking me up." You added, bowing gratefully.
"It's no problem, (y/n). I like hanging out with you." He smiled softly, placing a hand on the top of your head. You smiled back at him, feeling your heart race.
"I'll see you later?" He tilted his head. You nodded and gave him a small wave as he went into the building.
"Okay, calm down." You told yourself and let out a long exhale.
"Good afternoon, (y/n). Is it okay if I work in the gazebo?" San walked over to you and asked with a smile, his laptop and some files tucked under his arm.
"Of course. It's your house, San... I'm merely a visiting worker. You shouldn't ask me." You giggled.
"You know you're not just a worker here. Not to us." He smiled kindly and bowed his head before going to the gazebo to work.
You went back to work, pruning the surrounding hedges. They were growing well, looking healthy and providing a little 'fence' around that main garden bed.
"Yes! Hello there." You cheered when you noticed how some of the herbs in the box were growing well that you could harvest some. The rosemary stalks, lemon balm and sweet basil plants were ready to be picked. You stood up and went back into the house to get a bowl from the kitchen.
"Hey, (y/n). What's going on with that?" Wooyoung asked, seeing you emerge from the kitchen with a metal bowl.
"Some herbs can be picked so I'm gonna harvest them. Maybe the cooks can use some for cooking." You informed with an excited giggle. Wooyoung's eyebrows raised in amusement.
"Can I see?"
"Of course." You smiled and he followed you out. You bent down by the herb bed and began to harvest some.
"So what are all these?" He asked, deciding to bend down to be on the same height as you to get a closer look at what you were doing.
"Rosemary grows quickly and it's a sturdy plant so there's quite a bit of harvest. This is lemon balm, it comes from the same family as mint so it looks similar, great for making tea." You explained.
"Okay, I know this one. Basil, I learnt how to make pasta from the chefs the other day." Wooyoung smiled.
"Do you have an interest in cooking?" You asked.
"It's popular with girls... A skill I can show off..." Wooyoung said with a sheepish smile, his cheeks reddening in embarrassment as he admitted to you. For someone always confident, it was the first time you saw him so flustered.
"I understand." You hummed and finished collecting the herbs, putting them into the bowl. Wooyoung walked to see what San was up to while you headed back into the house.
"Here you go." You handed the chef the bowl full of fresh herbs.
"Wow, they smell amazing. Thank you, I'll definitely put them to good use." He smiled.
"I'm glad." You giggled and went back to work. With the garden slowly getting healthier, there was less maintenance for you to do now. It was a good sign.
"Oh! (y/n)." Hongjoong stopped on the staircase, looking up from his phone. When he saw you, the frown on his face dissipated.
"Hi." You waved, noticing he was in new clothes, a full suit that looked a lot more formal.
"I'm... heading out. How's the garden?" He asked, pointing to the front door where he was going to leave, coming down the last few steps so he could talk to you a little closer.
"It's going great, actually. I harvested some herbs with Wooyoung earlier to give to the chef. With the garden in good condition, maybe I'll only need to come once a week to water and maintain it." You stated with a proud nod. But Hongjoong didn't really like the idea of you coming less.
"Come over less...?" Hongjoong repeated the only part of your statement that he focused on.
"I mean, it frees up a day to do other things. Not work. Besides, it feels unfair for you guys to pay me when I don't have work to do." You shrugged with a giggle.
"You know it doesn't matter. I'll pay to have you around more." Hongjoong smiled, speaking honestly, making you flustered.
"Sorry, I have to go. I'll see you?" He checked his watch.
"Yeah, don't be sorry. Have a nice meeting." You smiled. He grinned back and walked to the front door while you went the opposite direction, going back to the garden.
"Where did you go?" Wooyoung asked, leaning against the pole of the gazebo where San was working.
"I-I was giving the chefs the herbs that we collected." You stuttered, leaving out the part where you spoke to Hongjoong.
"Then why are you stuttering? Did something else happen, hmm?" He sang as he teased you with a smug smile, leaning forward until his face was mere inches from yours.
"Don't bother her." San reached out to shove him. Wooyoung let out a cackling laugh. You didn't know if Hongjoong told the others about you and him yet. They were his brothers first so you were not in the position to tell them anything.
"I'm going back to the garden." You stomped away, wanting to get away from this conversation.
RINGGGGG
"Hello? Oh, Jihoon ah." You pressed the phone between your ear and your shoulder to talk to him as you worked. Hearing 'Jihoon', San and Wooyoung looked at each other.
"Woo, don't interfere. They're not officially together yet." San reminded, seeing the look on his best friend's face.
"I know that but I have to help the captain if there's competition, right?" Wooyoung scoffed.
"He can handle himself." San sighed.
"I'm not letting her attention be taken away by another man. I have to help my captain." Wooyoung declared, marching towards where you were talking on the phone.
"Well, leave me out of it." San mumbled with a shake of his head, looking back at his papers.
"Hey, (y/n)! Stop working! Let's go get some ice cream! It's so hot out." Wooyoung yelled, making sure Jihoon would have heard him.
"Yeah, I'm at work... It's fine, I'll call you when I'm done with work. Alright, Jihoon. Have a great day." You said and hung up. You shot Wooyoung an odd look, wondering why there was a need to shout when you were right there and obviously on the phone. But then again, Wooyoung was always chaotic and loud.
"I can't just stop and have ice cream. I'm working, Wooyoung." You raised an eyebrow.
"But you were on the phone~ And it's so hot out, you deserve a treat to cool off and as a 'good job' for all your hard work!" He gave you a thumbs up, putting his arm around you.
"Do I want to know why Wooyoung was shouting?" Seonghwa asked from the second floor, leaning down.
"Want ice cream?" Wooyoung asked back.
"Sure." Seonghwa shrugged and came downstairs. Soon, Mingi and Jongho also emerged, somehow having heard about there being ice cream to eat.
"Should we call San?" You asked, eating a spoonful of your ice cream, remembering the male working outside by the garden.
"I'll text him." Mingi said after he finished putting the toppings over his ice cream.
"Why are you all here suddenly eating ice cream?" Yeosang came into the kitchen, seeing everyone scattered around. San snorted as he scooped his ice cream but didn't say a word.
"Because it's hot out. When do we need a reason to enjoy some ice cream?" Wooyoung asked. But deep down, he knew he was going to hold this against the captain because he so owes Wooyoung a favour right now.

"Good afternoon. How can I hel- Hongjoong, what can I do for you? I wasn't supposed to come in today, was I?" Your eyes widened as you scrambled for your phone, wanting to check what day of the week it was. Maybe you were not supposed to open your store today.
You've only been working at the mansion for about 2 weeks so you were still getting used to the schedule of going there to work.
"No, no, (y/n). It's not a work day today, I actually came for another reason." He cleared his throat. You nodded your head slowly, waiting for him to say something.
"I know your store is open today but my mother's grave is completed, I was just told this morning." He informed.
"Oh, already..." You replied.
"Yeah, I guess it's faster than I expected. But anyway, I was about to go see and was wondering if you would like to come with me." Hongjoong asked.
"What...?" It took a while for his question to sink in. You were not family, why would he ask you?
"If you're okay with closing your store, the decision is up to you. I could bring you another day if you'd like." He offered.
"No, it's not that... Uh..." You didn't really know what to say or how to react.
"(y/n), if you're not ready. That's fine too. We can go another day." Hongjoong spoke in a much softer tone. He could sense and see the distraught on your face but didn't know the true reason why you were hesitant. Seonghwa was the one that suggested he ask you along to his mother's grave site.
It was good advice. But Hongjoong was worried, would you judge his indifferent reaction when you were both there? What if you cried and he didn't?
"N-No, I'm ready. We can go. All the orders today have been collected. Just... give me a sec." You collected yourself to reply him.
"Of course. Take your time." He said. You nodded and gestured for him to take a seat at the work table while you went to lock the front door up and turned your sign to 'CLOSED'.
"I'll just make a bouquet for her." You informed him and went to pick out the flowers.
"Let me pay for it." He stood up, fishing for his wallet.
"No need to." You shook your head as you headed to the work table. Hongjoong watched as you skillfully trimmed the flowers and put them together, wrapping them with a nice, sage green paper.
"Would you like a separate bouquet from you?" You asked him when you were finished.
"It's fine, just one from you is sufficient." He replied, looking at his phone to avoid eye contact with you. You didn't protest or argue, merely nodding and going to grab your things. You hung up your apron and went to the bathroom to adjust your clothes and hair.
"I'm ready to go. Thank you for waiting, I wanted to be a little bit more presentable." You smoothed your dress down.
"There's time to go back to your place to change, if you want to." Hongjoong informed you as you picked up the bouquet to cradle it in your arms.
"I'm good. Thank you." You bowed your head. Once Hongjoong and you were outside, you locked the back door.
"This way." He led you to the car. Despite Seonghwa's advice to take a driver, Hongjoong insisted on driving his own car on his own.
"Thank you." You gave him a small smile when he opened the passenger seat door for you to enter. You laid the bouquet in your lap, careful to not let the flowers get ruined.
"Wow." As Hongjoong went to the driver's side, you looked around the interior of the car.
"You have a nice car." You blurted out.
"Thanks." Hongjoong, for the first time that day, smiled. He even let out a little chuckle at your abruptness. Of course it was a nice car, a Porsche 911 Heritage, it wasn't easy for Yunho and Mingi to procure it. But it was one of Hongjoong's dream cars and he loved putting the roof down to drive in the country side.
"Would you like to put the roof down?" Hongjoong asked as he started the engine. Your eyes sparkled with curiosity before you shyly nodded your head.
"Alright." Hongjoong pressed the button and you watched as the roof folded and tucked itself in the trunk.
"That's cool." You said. Thankfully, it wasn't sunny out. And you didn't know that Hongjoong was doing all this to lighten the mood.
"Let's go." Hongjoong played some soft hip hop songs in the background before beginning to drive. You carefully held the bouquet as you looked out the window.
The wind felt nice against your cheeks and it didn't feel so stuffy as it would have been in an enclosed car.
"Tell me if it's too warm or uncomfortable and I'll close the roof." Hongjoong said as he drove.
"Okay." You nodded. Even though the car ride was enjoyable, you couldn't help the way your heart was racing as you got nearer to your destination, it was like an impending doom.
Your fingers nervously drummed against your knees. You told yourself you needed to maintain your composure and your emotions in front of Hongjoong, even if you didn't know what your reaction would be when you get there.
"I... didn't prepare any offerings... We can stop by a fruit store if you want." Hongjoong said.
"It's okay. Maybe next time." You replied. You didn't ask Hongjoong why, he must have his reasons for not preparing anything, and you didn't want to make him feel guilty either.
Soon, all the buildings disappeared and you saw all the graves come into view, all lined up on the green fields.
"We're here." Hongjoong parked the car by the side of the road.
"Take your time, (y/n). There's no need to rush." That was the most he could comfort you with. He knew if he went any further, he would be crossing the line.
"T-Thanks." Your voice was shaky, an indicator of your nervousness. You looked out at the fields, not knowing which was Mrs Kim's.
"Okay, let's go." You looked at Hongjoong. He nodded and got out of the car, coming over to open the door for you.
"Follow me." He checked his phone for the directions that the cemetery director had provided him earlier this morning. You walked behind him, careful not to disturb or trip over the other graves. Hongjoong would occassionally stop and look over at you to make sure that you were okay.
"Should be right here." Hongjoong stopped and checked the name on the grave, it was his mother's name and her picture. You looked, indeed it was her.
"Go ahead." You said before Hongjoong could ask you to go first. It was only right, he was her real, biological son.
"Um..." Hongjoong felt so awkward because he didn't know what to say. You moved back a little in case he wanted some privacy.
"Hey... I brought (y/n) here. You probably want to see her more than me at this point... I'll let her do the talking, there's nothing much for me to say to you." Hongjoong mumbled with a bow.
You couldn't really hear what he said but it did sound like he mentioned your name to her, not that you would pry.
"I'm done. Not much for me to tell her." Hongjoong said to you. You nodded and stepped forward.
"I'll move to give you privacy-"
"Please don't... Could you... stay here? Please?" You cut him off, almost begging him. He was shocked by your request, he assumed you would have wanted to speak to his mother privately. But nonetheless, he nodded his head and just stood behind you.
"Hi, omonim. How have you been? I hope you've been well, I'm glad your resting place is finally complete. I-I brought you your favourites." You stuttered as you laid the bouquet down.
"I miss you... Sometimes... I wish it's still you walking through the door..." You smiled softly as tears welled up in your eyes.
"But I hope you're at peace now, free from everything." You quickly wiped your stray tears.
"I'll come visit you more often, bring your favourite tea and snacks. Just like when you used to come during lunch or tea time to chat with me." You smiled through the tears.
Hongjoong watched from the back, you genuinely had a connection with his mother. You spoke more fondly of her than he ever did.
It was like you were her real child while he was the stranger.
"Sorry." You wiped your tears and stood up to face Hongjoong. Seeing your tears, Hongjoong felt a slight ache in his chest. A feeling he has never felt before.
Screw it, Hongjoong wrapped his arm around you, pulling you to his chest. Right now, he knew you needed comforting, he didn't care about lines and boundaries. He could feel you hesitate for a few seconds before your hands gripped the material of his suit jacket and you softly cried into his chest.
As he held you, he looked over at his mother's grave behind you. Not once, since the news of her passing, has he cried. While you have cried a lot for her.
Yes, maybe the feeling in his chest was some sort of twisted guilt for not crying over his own mother's passing.
"Sorry." You cried. You didn't want to breakdown and cry, much less cry on Hongjoong's chest but you couldn't help all the emotions.
"It's okay..." He replied in a whisper.
Hongjoong and you stood there, he didn't make a move until you were ready to let go first. And once you regained composure, you did that. You pulled away and wiped your remaining tears away.
"I'm so sorry!" You said, horrified at the wet patch that was now on Hongjoong's shirt and the crumpled ends of his jacket where you had gripped too hard.
"It's fine, (y/n). Don't worry." He assured, patting your head. You felt your cheeks heat up at that gesture.
"We can go now..." You said softly.
"Are you sure?" He asked. You nodded your head. Hongjoong let you say goodbye to his mother, he didn't want or feel the need to, then you both headed back to the car. After you got in, Hongjoong kept the hood up, unsure if you wanted to just relax in the car.
"Can we put the top down again?" You requested. He hummed and pressed the button to put the hood down. With that, he began to drive out of the cemetery.
As he drove, Hongjoong glanced to the side, seeing you close your eyes as you felt the wind against you.
"I don't know how I'll be in a normal car again." You suddenly spoke with a smile on your face.
"Well, whenever you want to go for a drive, let me know." He chuckled. Hearing you say that, Hongjoong decided to take a longer route for you to enjoy the scenery for a bit.
"Would you like to go for some food or do you want to go home?" He asked.
"I don't mind going for food, if you don't have to go back to work." You turned to him with slight worry on your face.
"They don't need me. Let's go." Hongjoong said. You didn't know where he was taking you but you were fine to let him choose, you were not a picky eater.
"Hope you're okay with street food." Hongjoong told you as he parked the car by the street and pulled the hood up. You looked up at the restaurant selling street food, you were not expecting this. For some reason, you had the impression that Hongjoong and his brothers only ate at expensive places.
"I love street food." You replied. He smiled and came out, going to open the door for you. The both of you found a table by the side to sit together.
"Hongjoong sshi, what can I get you?" An older lady came to take your order.
"What would you like?" Hongjoong asked.
"Gimmari and soondae, please." You requested. Hongjoong added that to the order, adding on some other regular stuff like odeng soup and tteokbokki.
"Coming right up." The lady and Hongjoong exchanged friendly smiles before she walked to the kitchen.
"You come here often? The lady seems to know you." You asked as poured the tea into cups and handed one to him. He received it with a bow of his head and took a sip of the cold tea.
"Yeah, you probably thought that I only eat at expensive restaurants, don't you?" He raised an eyebrow.
"I mean, you kind of stick out with your suit..." You mumbled, embarrassed that he somehow knew what you were thinking.
"Well, I don't blame you for assuming that. My brothers and I do usually eat at nice restaurants because of business and somtimes because my brothers own those restaurants. But that doesn't mean we don't enjoy our street food." Hongjoong said.
"Your brothers own restaurants?" You asked.
"Yeah, there are others too. They branch out into all different types of industries. It's good for overall business and they're passionate about it." Hongjoong shrugged.
"Wow... That's impressive." You said. You suddenly felt so small, you were just a florist. Who were you compared to them?
"Here we go." The lady came with a tray, placing all the dishes in front of you two.
"Thank you." You and Hongjoong said together. She smiled at the two of you and left. Hongjoong reached over to take the cutlery from the box and handed a set to you.
"Eat up. We can order more if there isn't enough." Hongjoong encouraged. A nice silence settled over the two of you as you ate.
"The food is really good." You said as you chewed.
"Told you." There was almost a proud smile on Hongjoong's face. You watched as he avoided all the vegetables on the plate. You tried your best not to snicker, remembering how Mrs Kim told you that Hongjoong never liked to eat his vegetables. But you didn't want to ruin the mood by mentioning Mrs Kim.
"I just don't like vegetables... If I can choose not to eat them, I don't." Hongjoong said, noticing you were staring.
"Ah! I wasn't judging..." You shook your head. Hongjoong snorted, thinking he caught you in a lie. But thinking about Mrs Kim again made you feel a little sad.
"My mother told you that about me, didn't she?" Hongjoong knew from the expression on your face.
"I..." You didn't know what to say.
"It's fine, (y/n). At some point, I have to come to terms with the fact that your relationship with my mother is vastly different from mine." He said. You looked down, not wanting to meet eyes with him.
"It's not your fault and I shouldn't have made you feel like it was." He continued, remembering what the other Ateez members told him.
"No, Hongjoong. It's okay. I... I understand." You said.
"Let me go get more soup." Hongjoong stood up, taking the bowl to go to the front. You looked at his back as the lady refilled your shared bowl then she reached over to pat his shoulder with a smile on his face as they conversed.
"Hyung! What a coincidence to meet you here!" Loud voices were heard from the entrance and your gaze shifted to see Yunho, Wooyoung and San standing at the entrance of the store.
"What are you guys doing here?" Hongjoong hissed with a frown on his face.
"We just went to the casino and wanted to drop by for a bite. It was really a coincidence." Yunho grinned.
"I don't know what you're up to... But go away." Hongjoong glared. He took the soup and headed back to your table. But of course, they didn't listen to the captain.
"Hey, (y/n)." Yunho greeted. You gave a shy wave to all 3 of them.
"Do you mind if we take a seat?" Wooyoung asked. You nodded, gesturing to them to sit down.
"You can tell them to go, you know?" Hongjoong raised an eyebrow at you. Your eyes widened, you definitely did not have the courage to tell the 3 of them to leave.
"She won't do that. She's not as mean as you, hyung." San scoffed. You've only been working at their house for 2 weeks so you were still getting to know them. One thing for sure was that despite their fierce looks, they were all really nice and for some reason, really liked to mess with Hongjoong.
"Get your own food." Hongjoong scolded, slapping Wooyoung's hand when he wanted to steal of a piece of soondae.
"It's o-okay! I d-don't mind." You stuttered, shaking your hands. They were the ones that approached you first as you were working, showing their friendly side and trying to become 'friends' with you.
"I want kimbap." San said. Yunho raised his hand to add more food orders. Your eyes widened at the amount of food they added on.
"They're big eaters." Hongjoong said to you.
"I can tell..." You giggled, watching Wooyoung pour their tea. San's injuries looked a lot better, compared to when you first went to the house and bumped into him.
"Your order is here." The lady came back and put all the food down. Your eyes widened at all the dishes.
"You'll get used to it soon." Wooyoung winked. You blinked in confusion while Hongjoong flicked a toothpick at him.
"Don't listen to him." Hongjoong said, checking his phone.
"You guys snuck out? Hwa is looking for all of you." Hongjoong looked up from the device with a frown of disapproval at the 3 sitting at the table. The 3 just gave innocent shrugs, continuing to eat their food, while Hongjoong replied to Seonghwa.
"Do you always sneak out of work?" You asked, genuinely curious.
"When you own the company, it's called an 'extended lunch break'." San corrected with a playful smirk. Hongjoong let out a long sigh and shook his head.
"Please don't think the entire company is like that, most of us are actually hardworking." Hongjoong said.
"Hey, we're hardworking too, hyung. We just like to take breaks." Yunho rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, not all of us are workaholics." Wooyoung added. Hongjoong facepalmed, there was no way he was winning against the 3 who were against him.
"Since we're done with our food, I can take you home now, if you want." Hongjoong said to you, ignoring the others.
"Aww, wait for us. We're almost done too." Yunho added.
"We can wait for them. I'm not in a rush to go back home or anything." You said.
"(y/n), you shouldn't be giving in to them, it's not good. Don't start giving into them and what they want." Hongjoong adviced. You giggled at his words, he was speaking about them like he was their father. It was nice to see such a dynamic between them, Hongjoong and Seonghwa were very much like parents to the rest.
"Nonsense. Don't listen to him. We're great, the life of the party! You'll always have fun with us." Wooyoung winked, slinging his arm around your shoulders.
"That somehow does sound unsettling." You chuckled, making the rest at the table laugh.
"Wooyoung. Arm." Hongjoong pointed out with a threatening glare. Wooyoung did obediently remove his arm from you.
"I'm taking (y/n) home." Hongjoong declared.
"See you next time, (y/n)." The 3 were honestly not that bothered, they would see you when you came to work at the mansion anyway, much to Hongjoong's annoyance.
