The Rocky Horror Show at Oslo Nye - Opening night thoughts
This show is so. much. fun.
Everything goes wrong on opening night, and that's perfect. There were several levels of mediality, which added humour and edge to the production, the audience got to play along as well and be part of the cast, as we all made up the other Transilvanians and the characters acknowledge us. This made you feel relaxed to laugh, scream, and yell out lines (which were established at the beginning). The movie adaptation was incorporated into the scenography at one point, and was somehow blended in seamlessly. Some of the songs were kept in English (everything sung by the Transilvanian characters) and this was given a diegetic context and ended up not being weird at all. Although I had looked forward to the iconic Norwegian lyrics to some of those songs, the choice was very conscious and therefore amusing. The scenography was deceptively minimalistic, each element contributed to the clever humour and the actors had physical comedy that established a complex space on a simple stage. The whole building was used! You don't even blink at the green guys (not giving context for this one).
Now to performances, starting with Adrian Angelico who has the most difficult role by far: Frank N Furter. I talked with them after the show and they shared how nervous they were to take on this iconic character, how they didn't want to just do a Tim Curry impersonation or be the "opera diva". While the role somewhat requires you to be similar to Curry unless you rewrite all his songs, Angelico brought something fresh to a character who is ironically often quite uniform. I was so impressed by their singing and the opera definitely came in handy🙂↕️ Henriette Faye-Schjøll was absolutely incredible as Janet (they changed their names back to Brad and Janet to match the English lyrics😔). You can tell she had the best time out of everyone on stage, which says a lot with such a party of a show. She had an electric manic energy that gave the role great 'texture'. Not one beat was fumbled (even with some tech issues in the beginning, everyone tackled it like the pro's they are.) Her vocals were amazing and she kept up with some insane choreography effortlessly and with constant energy. Great screams!! Modou Bah was so charming and funny as Brad. The way they'd (slightly) re-interpretard his character was amusing and Bah nailed it. His chemistry with each actor brought out the dynamics between those characters greatly! Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes as the Criminologist/cop: oh my God, she was everything but boring! We were told to boo her, but by the end me and my friend cheered whenever she appeared. Her audience work was great and you could tell she put a lot of thought into her minor (but essential!) role! Gunnar Eiriksson absolutely stole the show as Riff Raff. What. a. character. I laughed so hard at his performance, the way he commands your attention was electrifying and you just want to see what he's gonna pull next! Riff is the one who establishes the mix of English, and he did that so well! His voice and physicality came so naturally to him and it really brought the character to life. Even with a voice that sounded a lot like Richard O'Brien, he made the role his own and I loved all of his moments so much! Trine Wenberg Svensen was absolute class as Magenta. She seemed so comfortable on stage and her energy was on point for the role. And what a voice! Helle Haugen was great as Columbia, she didn't miss a single beat and managed to balance the comedy and the serious moments so well. Rocky Horror is emotionally tricky- one moment is played hilarious but the next scene can be very serious. This is often reflected in audience reactions, queer people cry at moments where cishets laugh. You need to take it just as seriously as you give into the humour. This was something Haugen had under complete control, playing an explosive character like Columbia she didn't take anything away from the role during serious moments, I was seriously impressed by how she let us laugh during these scenes without taking the piss. She was so absurd but still so human. And her dancing was amazing!! Columbia had a lot of choreo and I loved watching her dance. Daniel "Diesel" Soheili as Rocky, LORD he was perfectly cast! Not only does he carry the Charles Atlas' seal of approval 🙈, he had an amazing voice and really brought something new to Rocky! He was sentient! And just so sexy and fun! Eldar Skar as Dr. Scott... what can I even say. His "German" accent was perfectly ridiculous and he did an amazing job with the characterization. I just loved his performance! Sindre Postholm was so sweet as Eddie, he made his scene memorable and has an INCREDIBLE voice! It felt like a tribute to Per "Elvis" Granberg (the original Norwegian Eddie, who died young of cancer) and that moved me :'). He was great with Haugen as Columbia! Skar and Postholm had (as Eddie and Scott often do) some extracurricular activities to do during the show, and when I realized that that was them, I laughed so hard. I don't want to give away what their roles were, but they brought so much comedy with so little.
The live band was so good and I thought all of the music was great! I really loved how the reprise of SF/DF was staged. It was very simple: the guitar player stepped into the spotlight and sat down to play❤️ Like the credits of the film, YOU LEFT THE LIGHT ON!!
