I know that learning Sanskrit is not a huge thing. The last time I learnt Sanskrit was in school and titbits from a great grandfather who tried his best to teach my rebellious teen brain. I regret not making the best use - Don’t mistake me, I did learn things but not whole heartedly. Now that I’m trying to self-learn Sanskrit or Saṃskṛta as it is really called, above are resources that I’m using and hoping that can help out others.

end of the term thoughts!
i'm failing one of my classes and it's okay. if i don't graduate a year early it's okay.
i'm looking into applying for a creative writing mfa program in the future because of my wonderful ta who is encouraging me to continue writing. is this considered a mentorship. can i bug him about everything now that he likes me
my therapist thinks i need to be present but imagining myself in other countries is my main coping mechanism so idk what she expects
i'm finally going to live in an apartment. it doesn't matter that my history with one of my roommates is incredibly awkward. this is a good thing for me. i will have a kitchen and gym access and will adopt a cat
i read like 19 million words on ao3 this year and that could easily be transferred into picking up more physical books and decreasing my screentime. plus my tbr is long because i keep buying books that just absolutely take over my shelf space — i should read them all
i need to stop pretending the new year is going to change me. i can make goals at any point of the year and change myself

Favorite wikipedia article of the year: the majestic Grass Mud Horse

Bonus Ai Wei Wei

“Covering the middle” can be rearranged into the similar sounding “Central Committee,” which is the name of the chinese government.
Covering the middle — 挡中央 Dǎng zhōngyāng
Central Committee — 中央党 Zhōngyāng dǎng
So “Grass Mud Horse covering the middle” would be “fuck your mother, Central Committee.”
#HELP THIS IS SO FUNNY#saw grass mud horse and knew immediately where it was going despite not knowing it was a thing#chinese memes

book from the sky (tianshu) xu bing, 1989-91
I was so excited to see a copy of this in real life bc it's something I studied in art history. this is a book that was typeset and printed by hand using wooden blocks but every one of the characters was invented for the sake of the piece and does not correspond to any word in the Chinese language

One language learning tactic I've been utilizing recently is setting a VPN to a country where my target language is spoken, and then using the free version of Spotify for extra immersion. Spotify's ads change depending on country, so if its servers are detecting that you're listening in from, say, Bangkok, all of the ads that you'll get are going to be Thai. I like doing this while listening to Thai podcasts or study music, so that even inbetween casual listening or studying, I'm getting even more input. And since the same ads generally get played over and over again, you'll gradually start understanding them better and better, as well.

oh by the way, in Danish, "fag" means "subject" and "slut" means "end" so on library shelves you will see "fag slut" to note where the break in book topics is

pronounced fay' sloot

You’ve heard of “don’t monetize your hobbies”; get ready for "don’t master your hobbies".
Your hobbies are here to help you decompress and have fun. They do not have to be disciplines you toil over for expertise, unless that is something you genuinely enjoy doing.
It’s okay to enjoy language-learning without ever becoming fluent, or even conversational. It’s okay to like playing guitar even if you only know a few clumsy songs. You can read books and never finish them, bowl without ever scoring even halfway to perfect. We’re here to explore and play, and we cannot do that if we’re chasing perfection in everything we do.
