I so deeply and dearly miss fandom and being active in a fandom space. I forgot (or it wasn’t like this before) how difficult it was to enter yourself into a fandom and more specifically an area of that fandom that you enjoy and are comfortable with, and I’m just not able to do it anymore. As someone who’s been active in fandom spaces on here and ao3 for years it’s also really difficult because all of your mutuals and the people you follow for a certain fandom grow out of it and start posting about different stuff or stop posting entirely. I don’t know if fandom has gotten less interactive/popular than it was 2-4 years ago, or if I just can’t find people, but I deeply and profoundly miss that sense of community.

Just finished fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood, the live action fullmetal alchemist movies (unfortunately), and then the fullmetal alchemist 2003 series (all I have left is the conquerors of shamballa movie and the ovas for 2003) all in the span of a month and I have a lot to say. If you are interested in my very personal and very opinionated opinions, please read.

(To preface, I love both, I love both so fucking much, but 2003 is my favorite and I WILL be explaining why)

Things I enjoyed more when it comes to the 2003 series: First of all, and most importantly, the way the homunculus are portrayed in this series caused me so much pain and I LOVED IT. Like???? What do you mean they’re the byproduct of human transmutation????? What do you MEAN???? And wrath is teachers CHILD. Sloth is Ed and Al’s MOTHER???? Envy was hohenheims SON??????? Lust was SCARS BROTHERS LOVER?? Wild. Truly wild. It was fucking fantastic. Good job bones you did some crazy shit I applaud you. It made the sins much more interesting and fleshed out in my opinion, and everything felt so much more tragic, which I love. And don’t get me wrong here, I love love love the sins in brotherhood, but they just got to me here. The strive to be human when you are not will always be a tragic and interesting plot line, and they more than pulled it off.

Next, I enjoyed Scars portrayal a LOT more in 2003 than I did in brotherhood. I will say, his motivations for killing state alchemists (in brotherhood it was more so for revenge, in 2003 it was more so because alchemy went against the ishballa religion) were a lot less valid and made him more hypocritical, but to me that just made him all the more interesting. His connection with lust made him interesting. And don’t even get me STARTED on him going to make a STONE??? shit was wild I absolutely loved it. He was a crazy bitch here and it made his storyline so much more interesting.

Third, and this is a completely personal and possibly only-me thing, but I loved the filler episodes. The brothers that impersonated ed and al? The episode about the dude who would kidnap children and transmute them to look like a lost love who was actually there the whole time? So much impact in such a short amount of time but doesn’t actually revolve around the main plot? That’s my shit and I loved it.

I also enjoyed the gate and the universe on the other side so much. It is just such a cool concept and kills the law of equivalent exchange and I love that like yassss break my worldview

I know there’s more but I can’t actively think rn, those are my main ones.

Oh actually I lied envy’s dub voice was way hotter in 03 and I stand by that

Things I didn’t like about 03 compared to brotherhood: Dr. Marcos lack of appearance. I loved what he brought to brotherhood and I do wish that he was put into the storyline more, but that’s just a me thing! Loved his storyline and wish they did more with him in 03

Next, The ending. Since I haven’t seen the movie just yet I don’t want to bash it too much since I think the movie is supposed to be a kind of end to the series, but this is how I feel about the shows end. It was beautiful, it was tragic, but I like happy endings lol, and that’s what brotherhood did which I appreciate. I knew I was in for a sad ending, but I prefer a happy ending any day

Third, the main antagonist. I fear I enjoyed father as an antagonist MUCH MUCH more than Dante. The dwarf in the flask episode in brotherhood changed me as a person, and I feel father was just more fleshed out as a villain than Dante was.

Lastly, kinda connected to the last thing, Hohenheims portrayal. In 2003 he lowkey was giving evil while in brotherhood he was giving kind man who went through an awful traumatic terrible thing and shouldn’t have had kids. I just think he should’ve been fleshed out more, especially his lore with Dante.

General thought: In all, I think that the plot in brotherhood was MUCH more cohesive and put together than the plot in 2003, but that fact truly does not effect my opinion on either show, just something I thought needed to be pointed out! I liked both shows plots equally, just feel that 2003 is not very cohesive

I enjoyed the characterization and character designs in both shows equally!

Also, my favorite plot when it comes to both shows is absolutely and will forever be GreedLing in brotherhood. Greeds character development, friendship with Ling, and eventual death impacted me so much. It’s just my favorite thing ever and I would do anything to watch it for the first time again. Despite this being my fav plot point, 2003 is still my favorite out of the two shows, even though it doesn’t have my fav plot.

I don’t really ever wanna think about the live action movies again but I guess I should since I watched them lmao. Obviously, live action anime is never great, I watched it so that I could have all possible fullmetal content injected into my veins, and I don’t regret it, but honestly don’t watch them. The first one was terrible, between the horrendous sound mixing, changes in the plot, ORDER of the plot, and casting choices, everything was just BAD. The second one was the best out of the three, though still not great, and the third one was ugh, not as bad as the first but worse than the second, that’s ALL I had to say there.

And actually that all I have to say in general lmao. I love fma brotherhood, I love fma 2003, and they are both in my top 3 anime’s I’ve ever seen in my life. That is all goodbye
